The “New Reality”

People no longer just ask about it: They expect it!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Bio-Diesel

The State College Biodiesel Project started with the integration of Chemistry and Ag Mechanics.

Students have been processing used french fry oil from the North and South High School cafeterias for the past four years.

Physical Plant utilizes the biodiesel as heating fuel. We produce about 400-500 gallons of biodiesel each year.

Page 19: Recycling More than bottles and cans PASBO 2011. The “old” paradigm.

Bio-Diesel

Physical Plant pays for the processed fuel at the midpoint of production and sale costs.

The district used to pay about $500.00/year to have waste oil taken away. A by product of the processing is glycerine - a sugar or carbohydrate. At first we used this to make soaps but we now are continuing the energy cycle by adding it to Whitetail Deer feed at the PSU Whitetail Deer Research facility.

Bio-Diesel

1000th gallon of biodiesel (over 100 million btu's) has just been produced for use in our schools.

1. A gallon of biodiesel produces 118,000 btu's/gallon - thus we have supplied 118,000,000 btu's to our schools.

2. Our conversion of oil to fuel is 91% so we have recycled 1100 gallons of oil instead of paying to have it taken away.

Bio-Diesel

3. The averaged cost (supplies only) of producing a gallon of biodiesel is $0.83 while the district cost of heating fuel has been about $2.80 a gallon.

4. We have had almost 100 students participating in this project over the past three years.

5. Countless opportunities have been offered our students via the State College Biodiesel Project.
