QUITMAN- Two members of the Brooks County Middle School FFA Chapter attended the FFA-FCCLA Summer Leadership Camp, a weeklong camp for students throughout Georgia. Johnny Spencer, III and Tavis White, Jr. represented the BCMS Chapter at the camp held at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center in Covington, Georgia, June 20th-24th. These young men participated in competitions, dances, ropes course, assemblies, talent shows, free recreation, leadership training, and much more in an effort to develop leadership and team-building skills. According to Miss Christy Thomas, chapter advisor, “Summer camp provided a fun and exciting environment for our students; they improved their leadership abilities and learned more about teamwork, but more importantly, they developed confidence, something they can carry with them in all aspects of their lives.”

Sheriff: Grizzly kills person near Glacier National ParkKALISPELL, Mont. – A grizzly bear attacked and killed a 38-year-old mountain biker Wednesday as he was riding along a trail just outside Glacier National Park, Montana authorities said.Brad Treat and another rider were in the Halfmoon Lakes area of the Flathead National Forest when they apparently surprised the bear, Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said.The bear knocked Treat off his bike, and the second rider left to look for help, Curry said.Authorities found Treat’s body at the scene, but not the bear. Wildlife and law-enforcement officials were searching for the grizzly Wednesday evening.Treat was a law-enforcement officer with the U.S. Forest Service“Brad was an integral member of our area law enforcement team and a friend to us all,” Curry said.The second rider, who was not identified, was not injured. Authorities have closed the area, which is about 3 miles away from Glacier’s west entrance, for public safety.

Summer Berry TrifleINGREDIENTS

2 pounds mixed berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries 1/4 cup superfine sugar 1/4 cup fresh orange juice 1/4 cup orange liqueur (or orange juice) 15 Otis Spunk Meyer Golden Crème Cakes, cut into 4ths 2 cups heavy cream 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 lb. mascarpone cheese, at room temperature (or cream cheese)

Instructions

Clean the berries (if using strawberries, hull them and cut in half) and place in a large bowl. Add superfine sugar, juice and liqueur and stir gently until berries are covered. Cover and set aside for at least an hour to let the combination macerate. Cut the Otis Spunk Meyer Golden Crème Cakes into 4ths (you should have about 6 cups) and set aside. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat together the cream, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form, about 3 minutes. In a separate bowl, using clean beaters and with the mixer on medium-high speed, beat the mascarpone until soft. Using a rubber spatula, fold the whipped mascarpone into the whipped cream until evenly blended. (In place of the above steps, you can make vanilla pudding using directions on the box.) In a large flat-bottomed glass bowl, arrange a single layer of the Golden Creme cake pieces in the bottom of the bowl. Spoon one-third of the berries over the cake and then spread one-third of the mascarpone mixture (or pudding) over the berries.

Repeat the layers twice, finishing with a layer of the mascarpone mixture (or

pudding).

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or up to 24 hours.NotesYou can replace the cream, sugar, vanilla and mascarpone with vanilla pudding to make this a “simple” recipe. You can also replace the orange liqueur with an equal amount of orange juice for a kid-friendly light golden brown. Mix sugar, butter, flour, and finely ground almonds together. Add in egg and lemon curd. Fill the prepared pastry with the filling and press blueberries into the filling to make polka dots. Bake at 325°F for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool in the pan. Dust with powdered sugar before serving

Sometime in the next few days, 19 occupational specialties within the Marine Corps are going to get renamed to meet the directive sent from the Navy secretary that all jobs titles become gender neutral, the Marine Corps Times reported.They’re taking the “man” out of the Corps.“As we achieve full integration of the force … this is an opportunity to update the position titles and descriptions themselves to demonstrate through this language that women are included in these (Military Occupational Specialties),” Navy Secretary Ray Mabus wrote in a January order, the Washington Times reported. “Please review the position titles throughout the Marine Corps and ensure that they are gender-integrated as well, removing ‘man’ from the titles.”

Iconic job titles “rifleman” and “mortarman” will remain, but here are a few of the 19 titles that are changing, according to the Marine Corps Times; “man” will be replaced by “Marine.”In most cases, the word “man” will be replaced by Marine. Those changes are as follows: Basic infantry Marine. Riverine assault craft Marine. Light-armor vehicle Marine. Reconnaissance Marine (to include three other recon-related jobs that include the word “man”). Infantry assault Marine. Basic field artillery Marine. Field artillery fire control Marine.
