A Word from Father David
From September 2-20 my friend Fr Vincent Byrne will
be visiting me here at St. Columba. He’s the Pastor of
St. Colm’s Church in a village called Kilmacolm in
Scotland. Colm is the Scots version of Columba and
Kilmacolm would remind you very much of Paxton, so
I’m sure he’ll feel very much at home here. St. Colm’s
is quite a small parish and has never had its own
rectory, so for the last three years Fr. Vincent stayed
with me at my parish of Holy Family, the next parish
to his.
Like many Scottish priests since the Reformation in
the 16th century Fr. Vincent was educated in Spain, so
speaks Spanish. But he rarely travels far and, although
he has been to Central and South America, has never
been to North America. He’s looking forward to this
visit and so am I.
We’ll mostly do day trips and the Mass schedule
won’t change while he’s here. However for a few days,
September 11-14, we’ll go to a cousin’s house in
Wells, Maine. On Thursday, 12 September, and
Saturday, 14 September, the Masses here will be said
by Fr. Gerard Messier, A.A. a retired Assumptionist
priest now living in the parish with his sister. He’s
been here before and said Mass here as well, so please
give him a warm welcome.
Although the Mass schedule won’t change, I will be
out most days with Fr. Vincent showing him around
New England. I’ve not had any time off in more than a
year and the months of transition to living back here
in the States have been pretty exhausting so I’m also
looking forward to a bit of a break. You’ll see me
around and might well see Fr. Vincent at Mass but
I’m going to try to make these days as vacation-like as
I can. He’s a very nice fellow and a good friend, so
please help me make him feel at home.
