Who can go wrong with the Lords Prayer followed by verse 33: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. ”? Over the past nine months I have been sharing three priorities for the parish with our Pastoral and Finance Councils: Community: discovering who we are as a Parish community and continuing to grow as community. The early Church was known for the great strength of her communities and wowed the world with her ability to care for one another. Are you aware of our existing ministries, which have been serving the parish community and downtown neighborhood for decades? What new opportunities will arise in the year ahead? We encounter Christ in the sacraments, liturgy, and one another, and his Spirit always draws intentional disciples into community. Being Catholic has little to do with faithfully meeting ones Sunday obligation: that is but a starting point. Being Catholic has everything to do with intentionally forming commu- nities of grace-filled transformation out of loving obedience to Jesus Christ. Financial Stability: We have been hard at work the past year to identify solid financial practices for the parish and school. In the current Fiscal Year 2018, we were able to trim the parish budget by $50,000. I continue to review our expenses and am making further adjustments. For example, we will soon discontinue the tri-fold card stock worship aids for the English Sunday Masses. These were begun when the last revision of the Roman Missal was promulgated in 2011, which created the need to update our hymnals for the sung Mass settings, which had changed. In place of purchasing updated hymnals, we began producing the worship aids. This then necessitated the leasing of production machines which we can no longer afford on a monthly basis. Also, the producing of these worship aids requires more staff time on a weekly basis than I think prudent. It is time to purchase new hymnals, and I will invite your participation in this endeavor in the near future! The key need for our parish budget is operational cash. As you can see in this weekends bulletin insert, we have passed a balanced budget for the current fiscal year; however, we have no cash reserves. Standard diocesan practice is to maintain a three-month reserve of cash. In our case this would mean maintaining $325,000 in reserve. Lets work together to realize this goal. Long-term Endowment: I can dream of the day when Saint Mary Cathedral has a seven or eight-figure endowment, producing a four percent return each year. Can you? A $2,000,000 endowment would produce $80,000 a year in income, for example. This could be reinvested or received as income. Can you picture a day when the Cathedral pays for a major facility repair with the revenue from the endowment, without the need to draw on operational cash or incur debt? Our Finance Council and Director of Advancement are actively engaged in setting up an endowment with the Diocese of Austin Catholic Foundation. All that is required to begin this fund is $10,000. This would be a remarkable vehicle for bequests and legacy giving. Bishop Joe Vásquez has recommended that I share honestly the needs of the community with you. My vocation is to preach the Gospel of Christ; provide encounter with Him in the sacraments, and give direction to this community of intentional disciples by being with you and knowing you. Saint Mary Cathedral exhibits a love for Christ; deep dedication for Christ and his mission, and generous hospitality. I look forward to working with you to accomplish the goals listed above. Fr. Matthew Chapter 6 is an all-time favorite of mine. Who can go wrong with the Lord’s Prayer followed by verse 33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.”? Over the past nine months I have been sharing three priorities for the parish with our Pastoral and Finance Councils: Community: discovering who we are as a Parish community and continuing to grow as community. Stewardship & Development

Bishop Vásquez’ Prayer Requests: That as faithful stewards of God’s goods and blessings, we would generously offer our return to God in order that the Kingdom may continue to grow within us.

For those who struggle to rebuild their lives following natural disasters, that they may not be anxious but make their petitions to God confident that God’s people will be the hands of God lifting them up. __________________________________

Spiritual Adoption: You’re on the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby, who is completely formed since eight weeks. All he/she is doing now is gaining weight. Your baby’s mother appreciated your prayers. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby to term.
