RECREATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT www.richfieldmn.gov/recreation

Dear Community,The Richfield Recreation Team is gearing up for a fun fall season ahead! We are looking forward to the beautiful change in leaves, fall bird migration, cooler days for athletics, playing in parks, fall events, the first snowfall, and hikes at Wood Lake Nature Center! Hopefully, we will see you out in the parks and at the many scheduled special events and programs that are planned this coming season!

Happy Birthday Wood Lake Nature Center! The beautiful center is officially 50-years old this past May. As a community we are incredibly lucky to have this amazing green space and nature center to engage and learn about the natural world. We had to postpone a birthday celebration due to

the pandemic, but are planning a fun community event on October 2, please watch for event details to be announced. As we celebrate 50 awesome years at Wood Lake, we also are planning for its future including a new building. Staff will be starting engagement at the center, online, and at special events to hear what residents would like to see constructed and what opportunities the community would like to experience at the center.

There are several new playgrounds in Richfield that have been installed and are planned to be constructed yet this year. The new Augsburg Adventure Playground at Augsburg Park officially opened on July 22. If you haven’t been able to check it out, please do, as this popular new inclusive play space was created to intentionally remove barriers that often exist for all to enjoy play. Also, both Fremont and Christian Parks will be getting new playgrounds this fall that have been specifically designed with the feedback that came directly from residents.

There are programs and events for everyone this fall in the City. From nature focused classes at Wood Lake Nature Center, open skate at the Richfield Ice Arena, and a multitude of programs for seniors at the Community Center; there is something fun planned for all ages. We will be bringing back the popular Penn Fest and Half-Haunted Halloween, as well as working with the Richfield Arts Commission to help host a Trunk-or-Treat Event. The Recreation Team is also planning Friday Fun Days at the new Augsburg Adventure Playground that includes storytime and puppet shows! We are also planning a special event at the Off-Leash Dog Area at Roosevelt Park; please watch both our social media page as well as our website for event details.

Thank you again to the community-wide support of the "Round Up for Richfield Parks Program", at Richfield Liquor Stores. In 2021, we have been able to successfully raise approximately $5,100, for an inclusive wheelchair that will allow for year-round trail access at Wood Lake Nature Center (it is designed to go through both snow and mud!). We will continue this specific campaign later in the year, but are going to focus this fall on raising support for a new butterfly garden at Augsburg Park. We will be beautifying an area around the new playground as well as creating valuable habitat for these beautiful pollinators. Thank you for your continued support of this program, every cent has help make many projects possible!

Have a wonderful and healthy fall season; please feel free to continue to offer suggestions and ideas so we can best serve our community.

ADOPT A PARKBecome a steward of one of Richfield’s parks by participating in the Adopt-A-Park program. By adopting a Richfield park, you commit to at least two clean-up efforts a year: one in the spring and one later in the year. Adopters are asked to provide their own small containers for each person (like a grocery bag), then consolidate the garbage into larger garbage bags. Larger bags can be supplied by Richfield Recreation; call in advance of a cleanup to request them. NOTE: If any garbage has sharp or jagged edges or looks hazardous in any way, please do not touch it. Please report it to Parks Maintenance at 612-861-9170.

For more information, please call John Evans at 612-861-9395 or e-mail him at [email protected] Richfield’s residents, visitors, businesses and staff are grateful for your help!

Ives Auditorium located on the 80-acre Heritage Center campus along the Minnesota River in Bloomington. The six-member group combines violin, Celtic whistle and bagpipes, piano, acoustic guitar and percussion with angelic three-part vocals to create a "modern Old-World" sound that transcends usual holiday shows. There is nothing ordinary about the arrangements this group delivers in concert, and they have a wonderful rapport on stage. If you can see only one Christmas show this year, make it Christmastide!
