Recreation Summer Camps Hillsborough Recreation Summer Camps are returning to Auten Road and
Amsterdam School this summer! Our summer camps are open to children
ages 5 to 14, with a special half-day Tiny Camp for our three and four year
olds. Auten Road and Amsterdam Camps will host children ages 5 to 11,
while the Middle School Camp is for children ages 12 to 14.
Each of our camps provides various activities and where campers can make
new friends and have fun! Campers will create memories that last a lifetime
through arts and crafts, non-competitive sports and games, weekly water
activities, recreational play, and themed activities. Day trips to a swimming
pool and bowling lanes are offered weekly. All camps are staffed by well-
trained, caring counselors.
Registration has already begun. For complete information and to register,

New 5k Fun Run Opens Spring Events
The snow all finally melted, and the
temperatures started to warm.
Spring arrived and the events and
programs hosted by the Parks and
Recreation Department entered full
swing.
Run Around the Park A new event for this year was the
Run Around the Park 5k Fun Run
held on April 5 at Ann Van
Middlesworth Park.
With rain showers the day before,
the course was a little muddy, but
Parks & Recreation Hosting 9 Youth Programs, 2 Youth Leagues, Adult Programs and Community Events this Season
runners braved the elements. The
3.1-mile course twisted and turned
its way through the park, passing
the basketball courts, skate park,
baseball and softball fields, and
using the trail in the back of the
park.
Over 150 runners of all ages and
abilities joined the run to benefit
park development and the
Hillsborough Community
Assistance Network (formerly the
Food Bank). Mayor Doug Tomson
and Committeewoman Gloria
McCauley started the run, and
runners began to navigate their
way on the course. Many families
wore the race t-shirt and crossed
the finish line together; the
children were awarded medals.
After running, participants entered
the Finish Line Festival for food,
music, and fun.
The event was very successful,
thanks to the help of a group of 12
volunteers.
Youth Sports Leagues The fields are always full of activity
and youth sports in the Spring.
Both the youth Soccer and girls
Softball leagues play in April, May,
and June. Over 1,000 children from
age three to seniors in high school
are participating in youth sports
league this season.
Softball’s season was a bit delayed
because of the rain and wet fields,
but is currently underway.
On Saturdays, Singley Park is a
“youth sports center” in
Hillsborough. With Kindergarten
and First and Second Grade Soccer
using the small sided soccer fields,
and the Instructional, Junior, and
Middle Leagues playing softball,
many families travel to the west
side of town to
watch their children play.
Spring Youth Programs Children have no shortage of
opportunities to learn new sports
in the Parks and Recreation Tiny
Sports programs. See PROGRAM, page 5

Every year the calendar is full of
holidays and celebrations. From the
Memorial Day to the Christmas Tree
Lighting, the Department of Parks and
Recreation hosts special community
events. Each event is unique in its own
way, but all are perfect for families! We
hope to see you at all of our events this

Memorial Day Parade and Garden of Honor Ceremony On the Saturday before Memorial Day,
New Amwell Road is lined with
residents watching the parade. The
parade consists of veterans; local fire
and police units; youth baseball and

Troops, and various community and
youth organizations.
At the end, residents follow the parade
to the Garden of Honor at the Municipal
Building, where a ceremony is held and
wreaths are laid.

organizations can apply to march in the
parade on the Parks and Recreation

independence.
Last year’s celebration included
inflatable amusements, volleyball, a DJ
and performances, and the famous food
tent before the fireworks were set off.

Family Campout & Fishing Derby Ann Van Middlesworth Park is a busy
park with lots of activities, and on the
day of the Family Campout, the activity
level is no different.
Tents turn the outfield of the softball
field in to a campground for the night.
Dinner, kickball, and night hikes
highlight the evening.
The David L. Thomas Memorial Fishing
Derby is also held during the campout
for children under age 14.

Children’s cooking class returned last winter Little Chefs was brought back in
February and March to great
success.
The class focused on basic culinary
skills, including reading a recipe,
measuring, and mixing.
Children ages four to seven
participated in making various
dishes and treats, including
pancakes and ice cream
sandwiches. After making their
food, children got to eat them and
taste their cooking. All of the
children really enjoyed the class
and their food.
Return of Little Chefs Proves Popular
Annual winter basketball league reaches high enrollment Thirty recreation basketball teams
suited up every week to play in the
Parks & Recreation Department’s
In-Town Basketball League.
With grades four through eight
playing on Saturdays at Auten Road
Intermediate School and
Hillsborough Middle School, the
gyms were busy with activity.
Monday nights were reserved for
the boys High School league, played
at ARIS.
This winter saw the addition of
four Middle League teams (players
in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades) compared
to last season.
Each team in the youth leagues
played 10 games in addition to at
least one playoff game, creating a
lot of opportunities for playing time
for each player.
At the conclusion of the regular
season, the league entered the
playoffs in March. All teams
qualified and had a chance to win it
all.
The Winter Basketball League is a
perfect mixture of noncompetitive
play, a recreational atmosphere,
socialization, and teamwork. Many
of the coaches embodied the ideal
recreational coach, making sure the
children had fun, while learning
new skills and making new friends.
Registration for the 2014-2015
Winter Basketball League will
begin in October.
