City of Reno Recreation News

Transcript of Recreation Record

The City of Reno Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, with the generous support of the Nevada Military Support Alliance and local adaptive sports programs, hosted a Military Sports Camp for disabled veterans and injured service mem-bers September 14 through 18. The camp was a multiday event with activities such as whitewater rafting, scuba diving, rock climb-ing, wheelchair rugby, adaptive cycling, and more. Various area facilities such as the Reno Whitewater Park, Sparks Marina, and the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center hosted the activity programs.

Participants came from northern and south-ern Nevada, Seattle, WA and all branches of service were represented. Events such as this take place at sites throughout the United States offering disabled veterans and injured service members the opportunity to inte-grate as participants and mentors in their local communities. This is the first event of its kind in the State of Nevada. The City of Reno Parks, Recreation and Community

Services Department, with support from sponsors, provided transportation, lodging, adaptive equipment, meals, and individualized instruction in Adaptive/Paralympic sports at no cost to the participants.

developed signage for McKinley Arts and Culture Center which explains the Rain Gar-den and permeable paving lot, both of which assist in cleaning the water that runs off the building and site so that it can be discharged into the Truckee River rather than take up valuable capacity in our storm drain and sew-er systems. This project was made possible through grant. The project was funded by grants from the Reno Arts and Culture Com-mission, under the Percent for Art Program; the Truckee River Fund and Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.

Vickie Jo Sowell, the public artist designed and fabricated the interpretive sign bases. Ms. Sowell, contributes to the urban environ-ment through sculpture and environmentally

conscious gardening projects and activities (www.unrulyimages.com). The water-cut steel sign bases are a homage to the riparian habitat of the nearby Truckee River. They are zinc plated and powder-baked, and are expected to last at least 30 years. The inter-pretative sign faces were designed by local graphic artists, Sandy Silva and Michelle Cal-loway.

The Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center re-ceived a few much needed upgrades to the front entry and registration counter in late September, 2011. The work included a front desk replacement to make the registration area more cutomer friendly for those in wheelchairs. Additional work included new carpeting, expanded gym door entry, new unisex restroom entry, and relocation of a drinking fountain. The entrance doors were also replaced allowing easier access to the building through American Disabilities Association as-sisted sliding doors. The upgrades have made a nota-ble impact and numerous compliments have been made by participants of the facility.
