Record Amount Approved for Research Grants in the Natural SciencesMore grants than any previous sessionin recent years resulted from the February meeting of Research Corporation 's Cottrell Program Advisory Committee. Also a record was the total dollar amount recommended for basic research in the natural and physical sciences: $1.25 million.
The committee acted favorably on 61applications submitted under the foundation's Cottrell Research Program.This program, one of two grants subdivisions, is devoted to fundamentalinvestigation in the physical sciencesat graduate universities and publicundergraduate institutions. The 61awards totaled $752,964, and will support research projects at 51 differentcampuses.
An additional 45 grants receivedfavorable review under the Cottrell College Science Program. This secondgrants effort assists projects in thenatural sciences at private undergraduate institutions. The dollar amount ofthe awards, distributed to investigatorsat 39 different institutions, was$495,865.

A foundation for the advancementof science and technology, ResearchCorporation serves educational andscientific institutions through grantsin-aid for basic research in the natural sciences, and by furthering theapplication of scientific discoveries.

In addition to these regular programs , Research Corporation occasionally supports other importantscientific endeavors within its generalfields of interest.
Invention Administration ProgramServices contributed to educational
and scientific institutions includeevaluating faculty and staff inventions, accepting assignment of thosewhich appear to be useful and marketable, applying for patents throughqualified counsel, licensing issuedpatent s to industry , and defendingagainst infringement when necessary.
Royalties received from patentsassigned to the foundation are apportioned among the inventor, hisinstitution and Research Corporation, with the institution's patentpolicy determin ing the inventor'sshare . The foundation's share is usedto help support its Grants and Invention Administration Programs.
The Quarterly Bulletin is published three times yearly, with theAnnual Report constituting a fourthissue. Articles may be quoted inwhole or in part with credit to Research Corporation.
