Reconstructive (hand) Surgery Week was held at GPH from January 20-27, 2019 by a team of experts, including Dr Donald Sammut (Hand Surgeon, UK), Jean O’Reilly and Ann Garewal (Expert Hand Therapists, UK), Trudy Brooke (Expert Theatre Nurse, UK) and Wim Brandsma (Rehabilitation Physiotherapist, the Netherlands). A total of 20 (7 leprosy and 13 non-leprosy) hand surgery cases were performed successfully in this week.

As well as daily lectures for all staff by Dr. Sammut, the three therapists ran twice daily therapy classes for all the GPH therapists plus one who came specially from Surkhet. It was such a privilege to have this opportunity to learn from experts in this field. As well as the classes, they donated much needed equipment and materials. Classes were held about hand splinting and also about working with patients both before and after their surgery. All of the knowledge gained was very practical and will be most useful as we move forward in this treatment area. This visit has truly inspired and uplifted GPH’s staff members, especially Dr. Suraj Maharjan, our Theatre nurses, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

“I want my brother to walk independently”Manish went to school when he was 4 years old but he couldn’t continue his studies. “He used to get frightened seeing strangers”, shared Manish’s sister Mamata. “We want him to at least walk independently on his own, but my brother is a bit lazy”, she added joking.Manish Gurung from Syangja district is now 12 and he has Cerebral Palsy (CP). According to his family, he had pneumonia post-birth, which they think could be the reason for his current health condition. Manish’s legs are not very strong and he cannot walk independently very far.Manish is the youngest child of his parents. He has three older sisters who are caring and loving. Currently, Manish,

his mother and his youngest sister are living in Pokhara due to Manish’s health issue. Living nearby the hospital makes it convenient for them to visit regularly.Manish attended a 10-day camp organized by GPH a few years ago. He then attended 4-day follow up camp held in August last year. Manish was looked after by one of his sisters during the camp. He received a walker (as seen in the picture) to aid his mobility. A team of physio and occupational therapists recently visited Manish in his home to observe his condition and use of devices provided to him. The team was not very satisfied with Manish’s current condition hence they recommended further therapeutic intervention on a daily basis. Hence, Manish currently visits GPH on a daily basis and the therapy team are closely monitoring his progress.
