RAINCOAST EDUCATION FOREST CAMP ADVENTURE SEEKERS

Life was meant for BIG adventures and good times withgood friends. At our new Adventure Seekers Camp, wewill experience all the excitement and wonder the WestCoast has to offer. This fun-filled week of outdooractivities will include survival tips, wildlife information andidentification, compass navigation, shelter building, plantidentification, games and more ! This program is made possible through funding provided bythe Government of British Columbia and support from theBC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA).

This camp is jam-packed with skateboarding, surfing,skimboarding and SUP-ing. Our time will be splitbetween water adventures, parks and trails and at theskate park! We also have a few surprises ready that willhelp us enhance our strength and agility. Our tricks aregoing to be on a whole new level! This is one of ourmost popular camps and we welcome all levels ofgroms and shredders! ONE WEEK CANCELLATION POLICY:All programs are assessed one week before the startdate. Thisdate means that unless the minimum numbers of participantsare registered, the program may be cancelled. If the minimumnumber is met, you can register in some cases up until the datethe program starts. If you are interested in signing up for aprogram please sign up in time to ensure you can participate!

COVID-19 CANCELLATION POLICY: NEW

At any time the District may cancel programs if health andsafety of staff and participants is at risk due to COVID-19.Should the District cancel a program before it begins, allparticipants will be given full refunds. If the program iscancelled after a program begins, a pro-rated refund will beassessed. If your child is presenting with COVID-19 relatedsymptoms, prior to the beginning of camp, they will not bepermitted to attend. In this case, a full refund will be issuedeven within the one week cancellation policy. If your childbecomes ill during the course of a program, they will be senthome and a pro-rated refund will be issued.

Oh no, the program is full! What can I do?

Some classes fill very quickly. If the program you want is full,our online system will ask if you wish to be added to thewaitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or ifadditional classes are added.

My child is ALMOST of age to register for this program, can

they register?If the program cut off age is 7, your child must be 7 years of ageat the time of the program to attend. This helps us ensure thecontent and delivery of the program is age appropriate.

My plans changed – can I get a refund?

Yes! We are happy to refund any cancellations that are made ATLEAST 1 WEEK in advance of the program start date (unlessotherwise stated in the program guide). After this time wecannot guarantee a full refund. All cancellations will be chargeda 5% administration fee. You may choose to leave the refundedamount as a credit on your account and apply it to futureprograms, or have the refund processed via cheque.

I can’t attend every day of the program, can you pro-rate the

fee?By registering and paying for a program, you are committing toattend the full duration of the program. Pro-rating is up to theindividual instructor’s discretion.

Life is expensive and I can’t afford a program my child would

really like to do. Is there any way they can still attend?Yes! All kids should have access to Tofino Recreation programs.You will find more information about the Tofino RecreationCommission’s Kids Access Fund on our websitewww.tofino.ca/recreation . This fund is here to help subsidizerecreation programs for kids in Tofino  (including Ty-Histanis,Esowista, Ahousaht and Opitsaht). Access Funds are available for one program per child/perbrochure, to ensure there is enough to go around. Additionalapplications will be assessed on a case by case basis by theprogrammer.

FAQ - REGISTRATION

How can I register?As of late 2018, Tofino Parks and Recreation programs areonline through PerfectMind. You can register for programsfrom the comfort of your living room! Visitwww.tofino.ca/recreation and sign up for an account today.Registration must be completed this summer throughPerfectMind or over the phone with Recreation staff.Registration will open for all summerprograms on Wednesday, June 24th at 9:00am.

Why should I register early?

Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors arecancelled if everyone waits until the last minute (No“Tofinotime” please!). Register early to avoid disappointment foryourself and others.

Can I put my name on the list and pay later?

You cannot. To secure your spot in a program, paymentsmust be received at the time of registration. The onlyexception to this is in the case of utilizing the Kids AccessFund. We cannot hold spots from phone, text or emailinquiries without payment.

DISTRICT OF TOFINO RECREATION COVID-19 SAFETY POLICY

All camps will operate outdoors;Have less participants and a higher staff to participant ratio;All participants must be Tofino residents;Modified pick up and drop off procedures – to ensure physical distancing between adults;Out trips have been cancelled and are being replaced with activities within walking distance; Transportation and shuttle services have been suspended;Hygiene breaks (hand washing) are included throughout the program; Communication between parents/caregivers and recreation staff are encouraged to be via e-mail or phone;Strict policy that no children or staff can attend camps if they show any symptoms of illness.

The District of Tofino staff are working hard to ensure your child or youth has a fun and safe summer! Here is how we areadapting our summer camps to ensure we are complying with all health and safety regulations in keeping children,adults, and camp staff safe.

Please carefully review the following: Sick Policy  Children and staff may not attend camp if anyone in the home has any cold/flu symptoms, experiencing coughing,sneezing, and/or congestion, or a family member is self-isolating within the home.  If a child experiences symptoms that are a result of another medical condition (ex. allergies, asthma), a note from a healthcare practitioner must be provided to camp staff and be dated within 10 days prior to the camp start date.  Daily health screenings: Camp staff will conduct a brief health screening every day of camp during drop-off. Health screenings will be a verbalquestionnaire. Please refer to the Drop-Off Policy below for more information.  If a child develops symptoms during camp:  If a child develops symptoms while attending a program, they will be isolated in a designated safe space where they willbe supervised and supported by staff until they are picked up by a parent/caregiver. The parent/caregiver will be notifiedimmediately to come and pick up the child. Both the staff member and the participant will wear provided masks.  Please ensure that Tofino Recreation has your up to date contact information, including emergency contacts. To changeor update your information, please login to your Perfect Mind account. If a participant cannot return to camp: The Health and Safety of our participants and staff is our number one priority. During this unprecedented time, if a childcannot attend camp due to illness, we will withdraw your child from the camp and provide a pro-rated refund.  If we withdraw your child due to illness, they will not be permitted to return to camps for fourteen calendar days,potentially affecting other camps. Please contact [email protected] as soon as possible so we are able to planaccordingly. Thank you for your cooperation on this matter. Drop Off Policy  Participants must be signed in and out of camp each day by a parent/caregiver or other approved adult. Only one adultper household is permitted to drop off a child/ren.

Upon arrival at camp;During transition periods between activities;Prior to eating and drinking;Whenever hands are visibly dirty or have been in contact with shared surfaces;Prior to departure.

Posting proper handwashing posters and signage; Ensuring regular hand washing throughout the day;Providing hand sanitizer when handwashing is unavailable;   Having facial tissue readily available.

Upon arriving at camp: Driving: Families are to remain in their vehicle at all times. Vehicles will line up in a designated and clearly marked area. Cycling/walking: Clearly marked waiting areas will also be available for parents/caregivers who choose to drop-off via walking or cycling. All families: A camp staff will signal one family to approach the drop off area. This staff member will greet you by standing at the front,passenger window of your vehicle or directing you to the designated drop-off zone. At this time, camp staff will also ask aseries of health related questions in order to complete the required health screenings. Responses will be recorded on thechild’s confidential sign-in sheet. Camp specific forms will be e-mailed out prior to camp start dates. If a form missing, you will be requested to fill it out inyour vehicle or drop-off zone. Children will not be permitted to enter camps without completed health forms. Child/ren will wait with parent/caregiver until given approval join their camp group. Staff will signal the next family to move forward. Adults may not socialize with other families during drop-off. Pick Up Policy  Pick up will be a similar process with parent/caregiver remaining in vehicles or designated waiting areas. One family willapproach the designated area as directed by camp staff. Your child/ren will then transition from their camp group to theirfamily.  The next family will then be signaled to approach.  Adults may not socialize with other families during pick-up. Hygiene  Proper handwashing remains the most important strategy to stay healthy. Handwashing breaks will be built into the dailyprogram schedule.  All camp participants and staff will follow the same hygiene schedule.  Handwashing will occur:       

 The District of Tofino is implementing several changes to minimize, and in some cases eliminate, shared surfaces. Thisincludes providing creative and fun ways to avoid touching surfaces, if they cannot be completely removed.  Hand hygiene practices will include:

Comfortable and supportive footwear;       Comfortable clothing including layers in case of weather changes;Personal use hand sanitizer;Spray sunscreen; Snacks and lunch;Two full water bottles; Medications as required.

Physical Distancing Children will be encouraged to maintain physical distancing, with emphasis on no physical contact, as recommended byIsland Health Child Licensing standards and the Provincial Health Officer. There will be fun and creative ways to replacevalued camp experiences such as high-fiving or dancing. Camp staff and contractors will follow the 2 metre distancingrequirements with all other adults. If distancing cannot be maintained, staff will wear masks. First Aid Procedures  We have designated staff trained in updated COVID-19 First Aid protocols. This includes additional personal protectiveequipment, which has been added to camp first aid kits, and will be worn by staff when providing first aid.  Children will be offered a mask if close contact first aid is required.  Inclement Weather In the event of inclement weather, secured and covered outdoor areas that are able to accommodate physicaldistancing, are available. Adapted activities will be provided in the covered areas. If inclement weather is severe, campsmay be cancelled. If this should occur, camp staff will contact all participating families.  Special Considerations Items to bring to camp:  The following items will be required for all camps:

 Snack and meal times:  Parents/caregivers are responsible for bringing all of their child/ren’s food to camp, including water for the duration ofthe day.  Insulated lunch bags and/or thermos containers are encouraged as all food and beverages will be kept in personalbackpacks until lunch or snack time. There will not be access to dishes, refrigerators, microwaves, etc.  Physical distancing will be practiced during lunch and snack times as well as hygiene practices (see above). Activity packs: Camp specific supplies and equipment will not be shared. Therefore, induvial activity packs will be provided to allparticipants, and stored at camp, if applicable for that particular program. Activity packs will be sent home whensupplies are no longer needed at camp. Supplies include, but are not limited to, markers, colouring books, glue, etc.  Behaviour Expectations:  Parents or caregivers may not stay on site during a program. If your child cannot participate in the program withoutyour assistance, they should not attend.  The Health and Safety of our community is our top priority. Therefore, adherence to these safety guidelines is essential.We understand that these policies are new to summer camps and may take require an adjustment period. However,please have a discussion with your child prior to attending camps about following the extra health and safetyinstructions that will be provided by camp staff.  We want everyone to have a safe and fun summer with Tofino Recreation!
