The season’s highlight came when the Rebels were invited to the pres- tigious Sugar Bowl, where they defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 17-13. Vaught garnered SEC Coach of the Year honors. Those associated with the 1962 team donated the funds for the “Walk of Champions” arch, located at the entrance to the Grove near the Student Union plaza. The site is the route for the football team’s traditional “walk through The Grove” on game days. It was dedi- cated in the fall of 1998. The purpose of the arch is to remind all athletes that they play for national championships, SEC championships and Ole Miss pride. The names of the coaches, players, trainers and managers who won the hearts of Rebel fans with their spirit and tenacity are listed on a plaque. “Joe Wilkins, Larry ‘Leo’ Johnson and I first discussed the idea of an arch in the fall of 1997 while we were visiting in the Grove, and we agreed to purse it,” said Samuel W. Grier’s clincher came when Grossman threwinto double-coverage. Grier caught the pass at theFlorida 24 and made a nice cutback before vaultinginto the end zone to give Ole Miss its first lead 17-14with 7:34 left in the third quarter.

Manning was 18-for-33 for 154 yards, and forthe first time in his career he didn’t throw a touch-down pass.

The Rebels' defense bottled up the Gators’ big-play threats and gave up only four second-half firstdowns. Florida did not have a first down in five third-quarter possessions, and Grossman went 2-for-10for minus-2 yards. Taylor Jacobs had five catches for80 yards, and Earnest Graham ran for just 52 yardson 16 carries.

In the fourth quarter, the Gators began a drivefor a possible go-ahead score, but Grossman threw

his final interception, a pass that floated over thehead over Jacobs and into the arms of TravisBlanchard with 2:58 left. The Rebels ran out theclock from there.

Florida kept the game close with a strongdefensive effort against the Rebels, who had beenaveraging 35 points a game. The Gators’ frontstuffed the run and sacked Manning three times, andOle Miss had just 191 total yards.

Grossman threw two touchdowns to CarlosPerez in the first half, but in between his intentional-grounding penalty under a heavy rush in the endzone gave Ole Miss its first points.

for 138 yards and tied aschool record with fivetouchdowns as No. 24Alabama beat 21st-rankedOle Miss 42-7.

The Crimson Tide har-rassed Ole Miss QB EliManning the entire game. The Alabama defensesacked him four times andpressured him into a fumbleand interception. Manningfinished 18-of-32 for 219yards.

Alabama backup BrodieCroyle, meanwhile, had asolid performance. Croyle, who subbed in for starter

Tyler Watts in the second quarter, was only 6-of-11but threw for 179 yards, including a 51-yard TD passto Dre Fulgham and a 64-yarder to Sam Collins thatset up another score. Watts limped off the field aftera sack early in the second quarter and didn’t return. He aggravated a sprained left foot that caused himto miss the previous two games.

Croyle, though, mostly played a supporting roleto Beard. Beard scored on his first two carries with

runs of 25 and 35 yards and tied the mark for rush-ing TDs set by Shaun Alexander against BrighamYoung in 1998.

The Rebels rushed for 4 yards on 28 carriesand were outgained 456-223.

Offensively, Ole Miss’ afternoon was summedup on one failed third-quarter drive.

The Rebels had 1st-and-goal at the 3 with achance to cut it to 28-14. Ole Miss turned it over ondowns after two stuffed runs and two incompletions.

The Tide then drove 98 yards in seven plays,

covering most of it on Croyle’s 64-yarder to a wide-open Collins on the right sideline. On the next play,Beard scored his fourth TD, a 2-yard run.

He added a 10-yard score with 3:50 left onanother drive Alabama started after the Rebels failedto take advantage of a trip deep into Tide territory. That threat ended at the 16 after a 4-yard loss andthree-straight incompletions.

Manning completed all seven attempts in thefirst quarter, then struggled with no running support. The Rebels lost 2 yards on 14 second-quarter playsand didn’t get a first down.

The Rebel defense was led by CB TravisBlanchard with 8 tackles (4 solo). Ole Miss alsorecorded 4 QB sacks in the contest.

Williams gained 23 yards on 8 carries, whileChris Collins hauled in 3 catches for 61 yards.
