REATER ATLANTA CHAPTER IBM QUARTER CENTURY...

1 Hello all. I don’t know about you but I’ve had it with the heat and am anxiously awaiting a cool (or even cold) fall! I’m writing to all QCC’ers because as we enter the final months of 2006 and look toward 2007, your QCC needs some of you to “step up to the plate”. I believe all of you would like your Greater Atlanta Chapter of the QCC to remain vibrant and active. Thanks to a good number of great folks over the years, this Chapter has remained viable and very active. These folks I mention have stepped up to working as a board member in one of the various positions. They volunteer because they are proud of our organization. They enjoy the camaraderie and, yes, even have some fun work- ing with other board members! Each year it can be difficult to find those of you who I know are capable of serving, but are just perhaps a little reluctant to take on an extra duty. We do meet as a board once a month and yes, with all the great events we try to put on each year, there will be some other duties along the way. However, when one looks at an entire year, the amount of time any one of us puts in is really not that much. And I re-emphasize, we do have fun along the way while serving. Also, in any organi- zation it is healthy to have new folks serve, as they invigorate and energize the purposes and goals of the organization. ’Nuff said. I could go on as to why you should step up, but I’ll leave it at that. After more than a month of 90+ degree, humidweather, the QCC golf group of 22 was pleasantly surprised with a cool(er) andbreezy day at the Bradshaw Farms golfcourse for the third QCC golf outing of 2006on Aug. 11.

The course had received a number of lateafternoon showers and was in great shape forthis elite group of QCC golfers.

Overall, the scores were better than in thepast outings, with Lew Gruskin winning thelow gross with a 78. Nine members shot in theeighties, but Lew was alone in the seventies.

Low net was won by Ken Loux who shot 9strokes under his past performances. He musthave taken a lesson somewhere before theouting. Long drive was won by Paul Scannelwith a drive over 250 yards. Closest to the pinwas awarded to Walt McGill as Lew Gruskin, who was slightly inside Walt, had already wonin a category. Bob Wilson was awarded aprize for the one who spent the most time onthe course (and also got the most for hismoney). It was a tight race but he nipped twoothers at the wire.

All in all it was a great day for golf, fun for alland great to see the camaraderie among themembers.

August QCC Golf Outing Cool And SuccessfulQCCers played Aug. 11 at Bradshaw Farms Golf Course. One more golf outing is planned this season.

The next golf outing will be late October or early November, so stay tunedfor the details. We are in the process of lining up the course and working

out the finances. If you are interested, you can send an e-mail to:

If you’re interested in a creative experiencewhere you meet a variety of great people andproduce a proud artifact, then you might enjoy aweekend or a five-day course at the JohnCampbell Folk Art School.

The school has been around since 1925 inBrasstown, N.C., about 2.5 hours from Atlanta. The course catalog has a wide assortment ofclasses and workshops that include woodworking, woodturning, basketry, quilting, cooking, music and more!

I attended the Windsor chair woodworking class

The meals are homestyle and there’s eveningentertainment! The atmosphere is friendly andcamp-like.

Get creative with help from pros at Art School

What Can I Do?If you have ever asked yourself this question, the answer is volunteer! Events don’t happen by themselves. It takes time to makearrangements, effort to organize events and dedication to the club tomake an event happen. But you know what? Your board does itbecause we enjoy doing it and because we enjoy seeing all of youhave fun.

However, we still need your help. Some of our board members have been active for two yearsand more and are beginning to feel a little stale. They would like the opportunity to turn over thereins of responsibility to you.

It doesn’t take much time, and you know what? Many members actually write to say “Thank you”.

Wouldn’t you like to receive a few thank-yous? Contact any board member (See AtlantaQCC board information on Page 7 of this newsletter) or drop by any of ourmeetings. We meet at 6:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of every month at Sidelines inMarietta.

Membership is all about being involved and staying interested. Volunteer. You’ll reap greatrewards and enjoy the personal satisfaction of knowing that you made a contribution.

The QCC Investment Forum convened at theVinings Library Aug. 14 and Sept. 12.

In August, considerable discussion was given to annuities, with Lew Forbes leading and facilitating the Q&A. A brief intro of “inflation-fighting” investment strategies was made with aninitial look at dividend-paying stocks.

September’s meeting started with a general discussion on the market direction. Then Pat McArdle made a brief presentation on investment management with more discussion

on rollover options. The group also had somefollowup discuss on annuities.

It was agreed that in our next meeting at 6:30p.m. Oct. 17 at the Vinings Library, we will discuss guaranteed long-term income programsand investment management firm performance.Pat will lead these discussion topics.

How can Quarter Century Clubmembers work in concert with IBM toincrease our presence and force inour communities? Recently I askedYolanda Traylor, Interim IBM CorporateCommunity Relations Manager, this question.

Yolanda is in a three-month Chair Assignment, reporting to Ann Cramer. She is a 9-year IBMveteran, having worked in IBM Global Servicesand IBM Learning and has wanted this assignment since she discovered it early in hercareer. Her answer to my question was quitesimple: “Sign on to IBM On Demand Community(ODC). This is the key to IBM’s community presence and primary support vehicle to IBMers’and retirees’ volunteer efforts.”

At ODC, employees and retirees can log theirvolunteer hours and qualify for IBM donations of$1,000 in cash or up to $3,500 in technology

equipment each year. She said there aremany great tools available, including“Flexible Science”activities for students(such as materials toconduct an “Engineera robot” exercise),project managementeducation for nonprofits, tools to assist in mentoring engineering and science students, and tools to use with nonprofits in assisting elderly and disabled to access the internet.

IBM employees and retirees have donated37,000 hours of their time helping others inmetro-Atlanta communities in the past year. If you are already involved in your community,ODC can help you with more resources anddonations. If you aren’t, ODC can help you find a cause. Yolanda’s plea is: Log on to ODC andsee what it has to offer.

Sign on to valuable resource: IBM On DemandIf you are an IBMemployee, you canaccess ODC throughthe Intranet. If you area retiree, access iteither from the QCCwebsite link or atwww.ibm.com/ibm/ondemandcommunity.
