  • 1. RESEARCH TRENDS IN PHYSICS Dr.K. ILANGOVANReader Department of Physics,RKM.Vivekananda College,Chennai-600004, INDIA

2. Maria Goeppert Mayer

  • Mathematics began to seem too much like puzzle solving.
  • Physics is puzzle solving too, But puzzles created by nature not by mind

3. Maria Goeppert Mayer

  • Goeppert-Mayer worked unofficial or volunteer positions at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, from 193139, then Columbia University in 1940-46, and after that the University of Chicago. During this time, Goeppert-Mayer was unable to gain a professional appointment due in part to both sexism and strict rules against nepotism.
  • It was during her time at Chicago and Argonne that she developed a mathematical model for the structure of nuclear shells, the work for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963, shared with J. Hans D. Jensen and Eugene Paul Wigner.

4. What is Physics

  • Physics is the scientific study of matter and energy and how they interact with each other. This energy can take the form of motion, light, electricity, radiation, gravity . . . just about anything, honestly.
  • Physics deals with matter on scales ranging from sub-atomic particles (i.e. the particles that make up the atom and the particles that make up those particles) to stars and even entire galaxies .
