REALIZETHE FULL POTENTIAL OF IEEE2018 IEEE Foundation Annual Report

You are a hero to thousands of individuals in communities around the world. Your support has changed so many lives. I am grateful for your generosity and your example. Without your support, the most pressing challenges would be left unanswered. You have transformed countless lives, for example: students learningabout the historical impact of technology in their social studies classrooms or building robots at the library across town, university students taking on leadership roles in IEEE-HKN honors society, professionals giving back hundreds of volunteer hours to their communities, and people finally having electrical power to see through the darkness. The important work of IEEE and the IEEE Foundation is only possible when IEEE members and friends, like you, make the critical decision to give. Together, we will be able to continue deploying sharp minds and capable hands.

John R. TreichlerIEEE Foundation President

The reach and impact of IEEE Foundation runs wide and deep, touching all corners of the world and engaging all aspects of IEEE and its members. Each program that IEEE Foundation supports through philanthropy is addressing a pressing need in some corner of the world. Each donor helps to ensure that the future of IEEE holds even greater promise than its historic past. We thank all of our donors for their support, especially this year since the launch of the “Realize the Full Potential of IEEE” Campaign. These are exciting times for all of the IEEE programs supported through philanthropy. The IEEE Foundation continues to drive new levels of technological access, innovation and engagement through global initiatives designed to transform lives through the power of technology & education.

Karen A. GaluchieIEEE Foundation Executive Director

The Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign was officially launched in February 2018 with the flick of a symbolic wireless switch through the combined efforts of IEEE Foundation Executive Director Karen Galuchie, IEEE Foundation President John Treichler, IEEE Executive Director Stephen Welby and 2018 IEEE President Jim Jeffries. Each spoke about the importance of philanthropy and the programs that donations to the Campaign support.

Matching GiftsEmployee matching gifts are donations a company makes to match its employees’ nonprofit donations and volunteerism. Companies typically match employee donations dollar-for-dollar, but some companies triple or quadruple the gift amount! Many companies have such programs in place for employees, while some even provide the matching benefit to retirees and spouses. Companies big, small, and everything in between, match gifts of money and volunteer hours. Visit the IEEE Foundation’s Matching Gifts page to see if your company offers this benefit.

IEEE Goldsmith Legacy League – Forever Generousthe IEEE Goldsmith legacy league is an elite group of planned giving donors who are Forever Generous. the group is named for Alfred n. and Gertrude Goldsmith, whose philanthropic vision seeded the IEEE Foundation’s ability to support IEEE’s mission. Members of the IEEE Goldsmith legacy league are building tomorrow by leaving legacy gifts to benefit future generations of engineers. Many members have included a bequest in their will or trust document. Some have named the IEEE Foundation as beneficiary of a life insurance policy, retirement plan, or charitable remainder trust.

If you decide to name the IEEE or IEEE Foundation as a beneficiary of your Charitable Remainder trust, we hope you will share the good news with us. In 2018, three new donors shared that they have included IEEE or IEEE Foundation in their estate plans.

Ishaan Bhimani is a student in the Electrical Engineering Class of 2021, concentrating in sustainable power systems and/or power electronics at the University of Washington. He said, “Being a PES Scholar has been more than just financially impactful. Of course, the extra money has helped me pay for school, but the biggest impact that being a PES Scholar has had on me is the confidence boost. As a young college student, it is easy to be unsure of your path, especially when you don’t have any family or friends that even know any power engineers. However, the investment from the PES has confirmed that there ARE people who understand and believe in my potential as a power engineer, and that’s immensely motivating.”

Sathya Edamadaka, a high school student from Lincroft, NJ, USA, is the 2018 and 20th recipient of the prestigious IEEE Presidents’ Scholarship. A group of expert IEEE members labored for hours judging numerous projects on display at the 2018 Intel International Science & Engineering Fair to identify the top projects in our fields of interest and selected Sathya. At the ceremony are, from left, 2nd place recipient Oliver Nicholis, 2018 IEEE President-elect José Moura, Sathya, 3rd place recipient Maximilian Du, and Program Specialist for IEEE Educational Activities Lynn Bowlby.

Clinton and Mary Gilliland, longstanding supporters of IEEE Foundation, are Honored Philanthropists in the IEEE Heritage Circle. They visited the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway, NJ, US for a personal update on their investments in multiple IEEE programs. Clinton and Mary are interested in the Oral History and Milestone programs of the IEEE History Center. The Oral History Program captures technology pioneers’ first-hand accounts, and with the Gilliland’s support, more of these narratives are saved for posterity. IEEE Milestones Program recognizes key historical achievements in electrical and electronic engineering. IEEE has dedicated more than 185 Milestones all over the world. The Gillilands were most excited to visit the IEEE Archives and see Nikola Tesla’s American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) Senior Membership Application, filled out by Tesla himself. The IEEE Archives may be visited by appointment.
