Belief in the paranormal is widespread. A 2005 survey by the Gallup Organization showedthe following: haunted houses (42% believe), extrasensory perception (50%), demonicpossession (41%), ghosts (38%), prophecy/clairvoyance (32%), spiritual healing (54%),reincarnation (25%), extraterrestrial visitations to earth (33%). So, as far-fetched as therealm of paranormal may seem, it is a very real part of our culture and belief system.

The Vetala – The Syndicate

HauntingsAmerican states have legislation requiring that real estate agents and homeownersdisclose not only deaths but also all instances of paranormal activity within an advertisedproperty.

The home of Helen Ackley (Nyack, New York) was reportedly the site of considerablepoltergeist activity, including unexplained noises and the movement of inanimateobjects. Ackley responded by reporting the events to local newspapers and Reader’sDigest and including her home in a haunted house walking tour of the city. Ackley latersold her home, failing to reveal the haunting to the purchaser. Upon learning of thehaunting, new homeowner Jeffrey Stambovsky filed an action to rescind the contract ofsale and deliver damages for fraudulent misrepresentation. Although the New YorkSupreme Court initially dismissed the action, Stambovsky appealed and won – providinglegal support of the alleged poltergeists.

The most popular ghost encounters involve eyewitness accounts that match up withexisting photographs of the deceased. Pennsylvania’s 120-year-old Altoona RailroadMuseum is home to just such a ghost. Ian Pretyman Stevenson, MD (1918-2007) spent 40years travelling the world, ultimately researching 3,000 childhood reports of reincarnation.



Interviews with family and friends were followed by historical research in an attempt tomatch the children’s claims with documented events and people.

The film, The Boy Who Lived Before: Reincarnation – The Amazing Story of a Scottish Boy,documents the claims of a boy named Cameron who describes a previous life on a distantScottish Island called Barra. He recounts his siblings, parents, pet, home, and the nearbybeach. Detail given includes how he would watch planes land on the beach, and hisfather’s name. Accompanied by University of Virginia’s leading expert, Dr. Jim Tucker,Cameron and his mother travel to the island by plane… which lands on theaforementioned beach. How a toddler would know of an island called Barra, much lessthat planes landed on the beach, defies scientific explanation. Although not all ofCameron’s claims connected with historical records, the information he provided movesbeyond the range of coincidence and into the realm of paranormal.

Alien AncestorsSome believers in extraterrestrial visitation suggest humans are descendants of theseother beings – arguing that human religion, technology and culture were influenced byearly contact with these beings.

Believers of alien ancestors point to archaeological artifacts that appear to have beenmade prior to the existence of the technical capabilities to form them, such as the greatpyramids of Giza, Egypt and the Moai of Easter Island. Figures in Paleolithic cave paintingsfound in Wondjina, Australia and Val Camonica, Italy resemble astronauts of the 20thcentury, supporting the belief that ancient man was visited by extraterrestrials.
