T he proverbial Fountain of Youth

has been the dream to attain eternal youth. It’s true! People

have a natural tendency to challenge the inevitable

death with the wish to discover the cause of the

aging process. Women typically start thinking

about aging around 30, men around 50.

Tampa Bay-area patients can now take a closer step in attain-ing their wishes. The newly opened Weight and Body Solu-tions has demonstrated the “fountain of youth” through the use of state-of-the-art medical treatments. Can it be possible to prevent Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or even Diabetes? It’s con-stantly being researched around the world and doctors are al-ways seeking answers. Introducing Dr. Burton Feinerman to Weight & Body Solutions provides another angle to preventa-tive healthy living through the power of ant-aging.

Let’s look into a couple of testimonials which benefi ted from his treatments…

Ava M. was a 2 Year old child with Intrauterine bleeding of the brain resulting in partial quadriplegia had no speech and motor development. Within a month of receiving neuron brain stem cells and nerve cell growth factors introduced into her central nervous system via the spinal canal, the child was scooting on

her abdomen, making sounds and received control of her neck for the fi rst time since birth.

Louis U. was a 72 year old man with advanced Parkinsonism. He received two sets of intrath-ecal immortalized neuron stem cells with neurotrophins, nerve cell factor, his brain derived neurotrophins and vascular endothelial growth factor. Louis showed dramatic improvements with his speech, which was initially slow and slurred, along with his disappearance of chok-ing and diffi culty of swallowing problems. His memory and thought processing appeared sharper.

Daryl H. had suffered from hemorrhoids for more than a decade, but managed them using homeopathic remedies – until he lifted something too heavy at work. After that, the pain and bleeding became unbearable, and he began his research.

Daryl‘s friend had undergone a “banding” procedure to cure his hemorrhoids, and soon found himself rushed to the emergency room with a serious infection. Another patient he met described his experience with surgery as “excruciating,” followed by weeks of recovery, intense bleeding and soon a recurrence of the problem.

After hearing these horror stories, Daryl was re-lieved to learn about the non-surgical, non-inva-sive, FDA-approved Ultroid™ procedure, and even happier to fi nd Dr. Linh Nguyen of Advanced Hem-orrhoid Solutions.

“The difference with Dr. Nguyen was that he did the consultation and the fi rst treatment on the same day,” Daryl says. “I was in serious pain and discom-fort. After that fi rst treatment with Dr. Nguyen, an hour later I was out pouring concrete.”

Daryl was able to return to work so quickly due to the non-invasive procedure. The Ultroid ™ device uses electrolysis to shrink the hemorrhoid vein. During this process, water molecules are broken down into hydrogen (H+) and hydroxide (OH-). The hydro-gen is released in the form of small gas bubbles during treatment, and the hydroxide combines with sodium (Na+) in the blood, forming sodium hydroxide, which targets the hemorrhoid. It is a natural, noninvasive process.

The treatment is an innovative, safe and convenient alternative to surgery. No injection, cutting, or burning is involved. Additionally, there are no hospital stays, anesthesia, pre-op planning, long uncomfortable healing times or post-op follow-ups needed.

Daryl has more praise for Dr. Nguyen’s bedside manner. “He has a television in every room, and he asks you what you want to watch – your regular sitcom or whatever. Throughout the procedure, the doctor asks if you are comfortable and reassures you that he can adjust if you feel at all uneasy.”

“I would never have done it [treated my hemorrhoids] if it wasn’t for Dr. Nguyen. I have recommended him to three or four people all ready. There are no words for it – the treatment is amazing.”

Dr. Levin believes and emphasizes that healthy feet promote overall orthopedic health. Many patients with

foot pain also complain of back, neck, and even headache pain. The feet are the base and

foundation that support the weight of our entire body. And, poor foot posture can

impede daily activities.

Having trouble standing on your feet when getting out of bed or after sitting at your desk? Do you get sharp or shooting pain to the bottom of your heel? If so, you may have plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a condition of the plantar fascia ligament on the bottom of the foot. It attaches at the base of the heel bone and runs across the plantar (bottom) aspect of the foot. As it courses along the bottom of the foot it divides into 3 slips midway and then into 5 slips at is approaches the toes. The ligament is important in the support of your arch and the mechanics of the foot. When this ligament is overused, strained or not supported properly, it causes pain at the bottom of the heel. This is where the liga-ment begins and gets pulled excessively along its path and overstrained. The liga-ment actually thickens and sometimes swells along the point of its attachment. This causes pain along with possible nerve irritation or entrapment of a local nerve branch at this site. This usually causes pain along the medial or inside part of the heel.

Some basic exercises to perform that can relieve pain is to stretch the foot and toes with a towel. This relaxes the ligament tissue and will cause less pain when stand-ing from a seated position. This is probably one the most important treatments one can do to resolve the pain. However there are multiple aspects to a treatment regi-men including the use of heat, cold, oral and topical anti-infl ammatory medication, cortisone injections, night splints (to aid in stretching and relaxing the ligament), and prefabricated or custom orthotics (to properly support the foot and ligament reducing the strain and excessive tension on the ligament).

If all conservative treatment is unable to resolve the pain then one can consider sur-gery to release part of the ligament. This will relieve the tension on the ligament and possibly the nerve as well. However, to ensure proper foot support and foot mechan-ics, orthotics should be worn after the surgery is performed.

If you feel you have plantar fasciitis please contact a podiatrist for an exam. A proper exam involves a physical exam of the foot, x-rays to evaluate the bone structure and an ultrasound to evaluate the plantar fascia ligament. These can all be done at the same time in the offi ce for a complete assessment of the problem.

chocolates, soap-on-a-rope or jewelry, don’t forget to take care of your

heart. Heart disease is one of the main health problems Americans face,

largely because of our typically high-fat, high-cholesterol diets and seden-

tary lifestyle. This month, instead of taking your Valentine out for an expen-

sive dinner, take him or her on a nice long walk. Enjoy the outdoor activities

available in Tampa Bay, even while the rest of the country shivers in the

Dr. Richeson, who has been a practicing chiropractic doctor for eight years, designed his offi ce to be the “epicenter of wellness in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area.” “I am a wellness-oriented chiropractor interested in the general health and wellbeing of both my patients and their families,” says Dr. Richeson. “My practice is not just limited to the person that walks in the door; I want to help make families healthier and happier through wellness techniques they can use in their everyday life.”

Dr. Richeson says that chiropractic prepares the body to be well. Most people visit a chiropractor because they hurt, but Dr. Richeson says there are usually underlying rea-sons for the pain. “When I meet a new patient, I try to fi nd out why their body is reacting in a certain way,” he says. “First, I consult with the patient to fi nd out their concerns and to learn about their lifestyle. Then we do a thorough chiropractic exam to test refl exes and fl exibility. We use state-of-the-art technology to do exams, which includes a thermal scan that tells us how stress affects your internal system, we perform a surface EMG (electromyography), which shows how stress affects the motor part of your nervous system, we use an HRV (heart rate variability) to show how your body adapts to stress, as well as a number of other tests to determine what type of treatments are necessary. After I perform these exams, we discuss treatment options. Should I see something in a patient that I cannot address, I will then send them to a traditional physician.”

Former University of Tampa basketball player Bruce McKinney has found chiropractic care at Cypress Creek Chiropractic very helpful. “I play sports every other day and I believe getting chiropractic treatments improves your quality of life,” says McKinney, who lives in Temple Terrace. “Dr. Richeson is outstanding, not only from the back and alignment point of view. He doesn’t just straighten your spine; he takes a wellness ap-proach to make sure your health is good. He offers advice on diet and a whole-body approach to wellness.”

“If I learned anything over the years, I have found that having your body in alignment reduces pain and stress,” says McKinney. “Dr. Richeson helps you understand your body more fully, which in turn helps you make better life choices. I fi nd that I do not have as many aches and pains, and my recovery period after playing sports is much quicker. I highly recom-mend Dr. Richeson. His offi ce is a great family and Christian environment.”

For Alan Funnywell, a wellness lifestyle has always been important. “I have been a vegetarian for 25 years and have always been concerned about my health from a wellness perspective,” says Funny-well, a comedian who also is a functional wellness consultant. “I met Doc (Richeson) at a seminar in Orlando. “ I have been adjusted by chiropractors for years and when you fi nd someone who is good like Dr. Richeson, you stick with them.”

During these very few cold months in Tampa Bay, more and more teenagers fi nd them-selves heading to the local tanning salon to enhance their complexion while escaping the chilly temperatures. The tanning bed seems like a perfect answer for those ex-tremely cold days when lying out in the sun can be quite uncomfortable. Not only the warmth of indoors pulls clients in the door, but also the convenience of getting a tan in less than 20 minutes. All of these features seem to be an ideal solution for getting a tan, but be cautious. Tanning beds can be extremely dangerous for teens.

According to kidshealth.org, there are an estimated 30 million Americans who tan, and a majority of those are females aged 13-25. Studies have shown that these individu-als have increased their risk of melanoma (skin cancer) by 75 percent. Melanoma has been steadily increasing, with more than 1 million new cases each year in the United States. Teens and young adults who use tanning beds are at the highest risk of mela-noma.

UVA rays cause a persons skin to tan. They also cause the skin to age. These rays are found naturally in sunlight. Overexposure to UVA rays can cause major damage. Sun burns, diminished immune system and sun poisoning are only the minor risks you need to worry about. Long-lasting effects of UVA rays have been linked to skin cancer, which if left untreated can be fatal. UVAs in tanning beds are at a higher concentration than the ones that radiate from the sun. Therefore, tanning beds beam out more UVA rays than the sun would, greatly increasing the skin aging process and the risk of cancer.

Be cautious when tanning -- out-side or inside -- and learn that there are side effects to both. You should always wear sunscreen when outside or in a tanning sa-lon, with an SPF of at least 15. You can also try some alterna-tives to tanning. Spray-on tans and self-tanners have become increasingly popular in the past few years, and they are much safer than absorbing harmful UVA rays.

Check out some websites like teenshealth.org, mypryamid.gov, or health.gov for more informa-tion on this topic and others we have explored.

Tampa, FL - MRI scans that detect shrinkage in spe-

cifi c regions of the mid-brain attacked by Alzheimer’s

disease accurately diagnose the neurodegenerative

disease, even before symptoms interfere with daily

function, a study by the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease

Research Center (ADRC) in Miami and Tampa found.

The study, reported earlier this month in the journal Neurology, adds to a growing body of evidence indicating MRI brain scans provide valuable diagnostic information about Alzheimer’s disease.

“We advocate, based on these fi ndings, that the criteria for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease should include MRI scans,” said the study’s lead author Ranjan Duara, MD, medical director of the Wien Cen-ter for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center who is affi liated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and University of South Florida College of Medicine. “By incorporating MRIs into the assessment of patients with memory problems, early diagnosis can be standardized and done far more accurately.”

The normal MRI brain scan (above-left), showing no atrophy, depicts the three areas of interest in the brain’s medial temporal lobe: hippocampus (outlined in red); entorhinal cortex (blue) and perirhinal cortex (green). MRI scan (above-right) shows severe atrophy indicative of Alzheimer’s pathology in all areas, except the right perirhinal cortex, which has moderate atrophy.

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia, is characterized by memory loss, dis-orientation, diffi culty with reasoning and the decline of language and thinking skills. Alzheimer’s is diagnosed by a process of elimination since many other diseases and related disorders can mimic its symptoms, and autopsy is currently the only defi nitive way a diagnosis can be confi rmed. The diag-nosis often includes a medical history, mental status tests, neurological evaluations and blood tests. Physicians typically use brain scans only to exclude conditions that can also cause memory defi cits, such as strokes and brain tumors.

The Florida researchers used a new visual rating system to evaluate the severity of shrinkage, or atrophy, in the brain’s medial temporal lobe – specifi cally in three structures essential for the conscious memory of facts and events. They compared the MRI brain scans of 260 people -- a group with probable Alzheimer’s disease, two groups with varying degrees of mild cognitive impairment (mild memory problems), and a control group of normal elderly with no discernable memory loss. They found that scores generated by this MRI-facilitated test accurately distinguished each group from the other and correlated with the types of memory problems most frequently caused by Alzheimer’s disease. The more exten-sive the brain atrophy, the more advanced the clinical stage of Alzheimer’s disease.

The fi ndings are important in light of

many new disease-modifying drugs in trials

-- treatments that may prevent mild memory

loss from advancing to full-blown dementia if administered early

enough.

“This study demonstrates that MRI brain scans are accurate enough to be clinically useful, both in diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease itself at an early stage and in identifying people at risk of devel-oping Alzheimer’s,” said Florida ADRC Director Huntington Potter, PhD, a neuroscientist at the Byrd Alzheimer’s Center and Research Institute, Uni-versity of South Florida.

The researchers even found brain atrophy in some people without memory complaints at the study’s onset who demonstrated memory decline when assessed a year or two later. This suggests MRIs could predict who will get the disease well before signs

of dementia become apparent by other diagnostic methods as well as rule out an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in people experiencing memory problems, Dr. Duara said.

“If you don’t have changes in these three particular areas of the brain, then you don’t have Alzheimer’s, Dr. Duara said.Researchers at centers like Miami’s Wien Center and USF’s Byrd Institute are developing new Alzheimer’s drugs that attack mechanisms leading to the death of nerve cells and their connections. The emergence of these disease-modifying

treatments has made an earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer’s increasingly important, Dr. Duara said. “Having an accurate diagnosis will allow us to start using drugs earlier. The earlier

treatment begins, the more likely you are to stop disease progression and benefi t the patient.”

Most participants in the MRI study were enrolled in the clinical arm of the Florida ADRC, which is supported by a grant from the National Institute on Aging.

The Florida ADRC, the fi rst statewide, multi-center ADRC in the United States, was critical for the successful implementation of the study, said Dr. Potter, the study’s senior author. “To validate any new diagnostic test or treatment, you need a large

number of diverse volunteers for good comparisons. Alzheimer’s research is a part-nership between the scientifi c community and study volunteers; we need both to

solve the complexities of Alzheimer’s disease.”

And no mat-ter how you do it, one thing’s for sure, pulling the plug on your relationship with your spare tire gets harder as time goes on. Here are some quick tips to make a clean break from your love handles.

Dear John Letter: It is called a “break-up” because something is broken….in this case that something is your body. The relationship you have with your love handles is unhealthy. Excess body fat around the mid-section increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, and even death. Making a clean break from your love handles is imperative for your overall health. Once you decide to make the break, write your love handles a “Dear John” letter telling them the reasons you are de-ciding to get rid of them. Write down the steps you are going to take, i.e., diet and exercise. Give your love handles a specifi c date by which they must move out and be gone for good. Hold your ground. Do not go back to your old ways. Remember, you are breaking up for a reason. Post the “Dear John” letter on the refrigerator.

Exercise: When getting rid of your love handles, keep in mind that you cannot spot reduce; however, you CAN spot train. Perform cardio exercises such as walking, biking, and swimming at an intensity level of huffi ng and puffi ng for at least 20-60 minutes three to fi ve days a week. Also, perform weight training exercises at least two days a week. Work the entire body head to toe (biceps, triceps, quads, hamstrings, glu-tes, etc.) performing 12-15 reps, two to three sets. Soon, you will see your love handles packing their fat bags to leave your body for good.

Nutrition: To reduce the likelihood of adding more fat to your mid-section, ensure that you reduce the amount of calories and fat you consume and focus on increasing good carbohy-drates and protein in your diet. Eat fi ve or six small meals a day packed full of veggies, fruits, lean meats, yogurt, cottage cheese, whole grains, and nuts. To successfully dump the love handles, an active person should consume around 1400-1700 calories a day.

Once you make the break, don’t look back. You will be much happier in your new rela-tionship with the one that has been there all along….your abs!!

During the month of February, we often think of love and matters of the heart. This gives me a great opportunity to discuss advanced lipoprotein particle profi le testing to determine your blood fats. Cholesterol is carried through the body in little balls called lipoproteins. It is the lipoproteins, not the cholesterol in them, that leads to clogging of the arteries.

According to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines, 50 per-cent of people who have a heart attack have normal cholesterol levels.

Standard cholesterol testing only gives you part of the picture, leaving many people with “normal” cholesterol numbers unaware that they are still at risk for a heart attack. NCEP introduced new risk factors that are responsible for many individuals being at risk for cardiovascular disease. These risk factors can only be identifi ed with advanced lipoprotein testing.

Where do you get advanced testing you ask? Physical Medicine Center offers you the chance to see your Lipoprotein Particle Profi le (LPP). This is an advanced test that accurately assesses your risk for heart disease by measuring the size, density and number of your LDL and HDL lipoprotein particles.

You need to know about lipoprotein particles because research has shown that there are different sizes of LDL and HDL particles, and some are much more dangerous than others. Having a detailed LPP gives your doctor the information needed to make more effective treatment decisions to reduce your risk for heart disease and even heart at-tack.

Who needs an LPP? All patients do, but especially those who have a fam-ily history of heart disease or diabe-tes, have been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes, or are already taking cholesterol-lowering medi-cations. You also need an LPP if you have been diagnosed with Metabolic syndrome or are over-weight, have a low HDL (good cholesterol) or high LDL (bad cholesterol), or if you have high triglycerides.

Physical Medicine Center offers an advanced array of alternative and conventional treatment options and laboratory testing such as the LPP or the Functional Intracellular Nutrient Analysis, as well as full evaluation of the male and female stress hormones and sex hormones. If you would like to schedule a no-charge consultation to see if you could benefi t from any of the testing mentioned in this article please call 813-978-0020 ext. # 4 and make an appointment. You and your heart will be happy that you did!

To understand how to lose weight, you must fi rst understand how and why your body is designed and how it works. Mankind has always struggled with weight. Unlike today, the problem used to be gaining weight. We used to struggle with starvation. In prehis-toric times, hunters would constantly seek out food, hoping only to survive. Later on, man learned how to use land to grow crops. We would have to store whatever was grown in the summer for food in the winter. Until recently, these two methods provided us with food stored for the lean times. Therefore, our bodies’ natural response is to adapt for times of famine when food is not plentiful. Our bodies are designed not to lose weight but to store every ounce of energy in fat cells.

Our bodies have a process called homeostasis. This means that we try to resist change. Unfortunately, we don’t try to resist gaining weight, only losing weight. As soon as our body determines that we are losing weight, it tries to stop the loss. The fi rst thing the body does is slows or metabolism down. This slows the burning of calories and fat.

We will feel fatigue and an inability to concentrate. Second, it sends a signal to the mind, telling us to eat. Usually this signal encourages us to eat foods with has high energy (fat and carbohydrates). Snack food developers have recognized this and have been more than happy to give us what our bodies crave: sugar and fattening foods. Only after the body has determined that we are not going to feed its craving for sugar and fat will it begin the process of breaking down stored fat. As we break down fat, the body continues to slow our metabolism. It is trying to maintain homeostasis by way of preventing any weight loss.

Basic metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of calories that the body burns without any extra activity. The BMR is different for every person. It is controlled by age, sex, stress level, happiness or depression, hormones and body size.

Remember, it does not matter how much you eat. If you are not burning more calories than you intake, YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT! Simply put:

At Body By Design of Tampa Bay, we have an in-depth understanding of the miracle of how you are made. This knowledge is combined with modern med-icine to take your body to the next level. Every patient is evaluated and we formulate an individualized plan for success. Whether it is a change in diet, increase in exercise, medications or the revolutionary Vaser Liposelection surgery, we will help bring out a beautiful you.

Acne is the most common condition seen and

treated by physicians today. In fact, it will affect

almost everyone at some point in their lives.

Acne causes people a great deal of anxiety

and embarrassment. Acne is most common on

the face, neck, chest and back, where the se-

baceous (oil) glands are most numerous.

Despite nearly equal numbers of males and females graduating from medical schools, women account for less than 20 percent of all cardiologists, according to fi ndings from a 10-year follow-up survey published in the Dec. 16-23, 2008, issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Moreover, two-thirds of women continue to report discrimination, mostly due to com-peting demands of parenting and family responsibilities. With so many young women entering medical school, the healthcare community has expressed concern over their underrepresentation in certain specialties such as cardiology.

“Women in cardiology continue to face the same institutional and personal roadblocks as those in other areas of medicine and science,” says Athena Poppas, M.D., F.A.C.C., associate professor of medicine, Brown University Medical School.

As more Americans live with chronic heart conditions, the need to ensure a stable and competent cardiology workforce, including the recruitment of women, has become in-creasingly urgent.

“One-third of Americans will have cardiovascular disease, so we must attract the best and the brightest -; and that includes women -; to keep up with de-mand and provide the highest level of patient care and research to help advance the fi eld,” says Dr. Poppas, who also serves as chair of the American College of Cardiology’s Women in Cardiol-ogy Council, which commissioned the study. “We need to fi nd ways to reduce discrimination, es-tablish greater fl exibility in work hours and expand opportunities for mentorship to better meet the needs of women and men as they plan their careers in cardiology.”

The need for greater fl exibility is no longer gender-specifi c; both male and female doctors are striving for a better work-life bal-ance. In fact, a similar proportion of male and female cardiologists are working less than full-time (80 percent vs. 82 percent, respec-tively). This coincides with an overall trend toward more life-style-friendly areas of medicine, such as emergency departments, anesthesiology and radiology, which give doctors more control over their hours.

The current survey of 1,110 par-ticipants, a follow-up to the 1996 survey, aims to better understand the career and lifestyle needs of male and female cardiologists. For more information, visit www.acc.org.

There are two main classifi cations of acne: infl ammatory and non-infl ammatory. Blackheads and whiteheads are two types of non-infl ammatory acne. Closed come-dos (blackheads) are caused by a blockage in the hair follicle. The trapped sebum (oil) and dead cells oxidize when exposed to oxygen, producing a black spot. With open comedos (whiteheads) the trapped sebum remians under the skin producing a white bump. Infl ammatory acne occurs when bacteria is trapped within the skin. An acne papule is the mildest form, consisting of round hard red bumps. This can easily turn into a pustule which is larger and contains yellowish pus in the center. Nodules lie deeper in the skin, are painful and can take a longer time to heal. The most severe type of infl ammatory acne is called cystic acne. This condition consists of severely infected deep nodules. There is a high possibility of scarring with this condition.

The exact cause of acne is not known, but it pretty much comes down to an excess of oil on the skin lead-ing to clogged hair follicles and pores. There are also many ways to make acne worse. The most common is by scratching or picking. This forces skin bacteria into clogged pores, starting an infection. Another mistake is over-scrubbing the skin. This signals the oil glands to produce even more sebum, leading to more acne. Any number of topical agents like soaps, makeup, per-fumes, shaving creams and lotions can block pores or over-dry the skin, increasing the possibility of acne.

The most common time for acne outbreaks to occur is during puberty when more oil is produced as the skin is changing. However, when adults are plagued with acne it can be frustrating and embarrassing.

There are countless over-the-counter medications for the treatment of acne, most containing combinations of alph and beta-hydroxy acids and drying agents. If these do not work, consultation with a physician is recommended. There are many oral and topical drugs which can dramatically reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks. Acne can also be successfully treated using a specifi c wavelength of laser light. The light does two things; it kills the bacteria that cause acne and dries the skin to reduce oil output. The treatments are scheduled one or two times per month until the condition subsides. Another laser called the Erbium:Yag is used for the removal of acne scarring. The combination of laser therapy with proper home care can usually prevent further problems.

To help control acne at home, cleanse your skin twice daily. Using a gentle exfoliative (product that contains acid) at night will help to increase cell turnover, meaning there will be less dead skin to block pores. Lastly, moisturize with a non-greasy moisturizer. If you do not replace the skin’s moisture, the oil glands will produce more oil.

It is also important to wash your hands more frequently and avoid putting your fi ngers and hands on your face unnecessarily. Additionally, avoid resting your face in your hands while studying, sitting in class or watching TV. Although greasy foods do not cause acne, if a certain food produces an ‘acne reaction’, avoid it. Since stress can decrease our body’s immune response and slow down healing, try to fi nd time to relax. Most important of all, do not scratch, pick or pop acne pimples which causes scarring.

Scratching,

picking and

over-scrubbing

all make

acne worse.

Perhaps it is the holiday season, celebrating with loved ones and the comforting foods and fi ne spirits that give me a yearning for Italian food. Conveniently located as part of the Westshore mall, Maggiano’s is the perfect place to both stop to take a quick inven-tory and enjoy a glass of wine. The natural wood décor, colorful fl ower bouquets and crisp white lines give an air of classic rat pack elegance without seeming pretentious. The music crooning from the audio system or piano immediately relaxes me.

Maggianos is ideal for making your meal the main event, instead of a pre-lude to the rest of the evening. Fam-ily-style menus are offered for parties of four or more. This includes fi ve unending courses of two dishes each. Between such classical selections as chicken parmesan, bruchetta, cala-mari and cheesecake, and signature dishes such as spinach and chicken manicotti (my personal weakness), beef tenderloin and mushrooms, and chopped salad, there is something for everyone. The service is fantastic;

everyone assists in maintaining the table, from bar service to second helpings.

The meal moves naturally at a snail’s pace, so bring someone whose company you truly enjoy, sit back and relax, soak in the atmo-sphere, sip your wine, taste mouthwatering food, and enjoy dining as an experience. Overindulge. You survived the hustle and bustle. Maggiano’s is the perfect place to treat yourself. You’ve earned it.

Two-thirds of people who go on diets gain the weight back in one year. Ninety-eight percent of people who lose weight gain it back in two years! With statistics like that, it is clear that diets do not work. As they say, if you go on a diet, you will come off the diet. Once you come off of the diet, if you resume your old habits, you gain the weight back, usually more and sometimes very quickly.

It is important to develop healthy eating habits by eating well-balanced meals. To have a nutritionally balanced program, you should have 40 – 60 percent of low glyce-mic carbohydrates, 15 – 30 percent protein, and 15 -30 percent proper fats. For many 50 – 25 – 25 respectively, is a good balance. If the body does not have the ap-propriate fats or low glycemic carbohydrates, it becomes out of balance. The glycemic index is the rate at which a food raises your blood sugar and insulin. Glucose is the standard. It has an index of 100.

Carbohydrates have glucose, the body’s No. 1 source of fuel. Low glycemic carbo-hydrates have minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants the body needs. If the body does not have the appropriate amount of low glycemic carbohydrates, it will go into a false state of starvation. Without carbs, the body begins to feed off of water and quick glucose stores called glucogen in the muscle and liver. A person can easily lose six to eight pounds in two to three days without losing any fat. Since you are losing an equal amount of fat and muscle, your percentage of body fat does not change either.

Bread, rice, potatoes, bagels, crackers, cookies, cakes, cereals, pasta, all spike blood sugar really quickly. This stimulates and sometimes over-stimulates the release of insulin. If your blood sugar goes too low or into a hypoglycemic range, you can become mentally disoriented, have a seizure, or go into a coma. To prevent that, the body must release stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol to drive blood sugar back to normal. Typically this process leaves you extremely hungry, craving high glycemic foods, and the whole process begins again.

Over years of this cycle, the body becomes less sensitive to insulin. The body begins making more and more insulin to compensate. Because insulin is also a storage hor-mone that drives glucose to fat cells for storage, more and more fat is stored around the abdomen which causes a host of problems as well as weight gain.

Look for low glycemic foods. Eat regularly, and try to eat balanced meals. Incorpo-rate moderate exercise like walking 30 minutes fi ve days and week, and watch the weight come off.

In the coming months, you may receive a reminder card from your vet to schedule a teeth cleaning for your pet. For many, the thought of putting our favorite four legger under anesthesia is scary….and for a few the idea is absolutely absurd!

How do you know if your pet’s dental health is less than pearly white? The fi rst indi-cator is bad breath. I am not talking about typical doggie breath…but a putrid…can’t stand to be around you….odor that makes your pooches smooches something to be avoided. Also, discolored teeth, mouth pain, excessive drooling, bleeding gums or loss of appetite are all signs.

As with humans, pets will build tartar and plaque if their teeth go uncared for. The build up of these two culprits may lead to gingivitis and then periodontal disease (gum disease). Gingivitis is treatable but Periodontal disease is not. It can be stopped and then managed by the proper professional treatment however. You defi nitely do not want your dog or cat to get to this point.

Poor dental hygiene can also lead to other problems such as Oro-Nasal Fistulas, Fe-line Odontoclastis Resorptive Lesions and fi nally Kidney, Liver or Heart Disease. The latter is life threatening and can lead to the death of the pet. It occurs by the bacteria gaining access to the blood stream through the compromised gums. Bacteria-laden plaque can actually lodge in the heart valves, liver, kidney and lungs.

You will be happy to know that there are easy solutions to get you back on the road to pleasant doggie kisses.

Brusha Brusha Brusha- Yes, brush your pet’s teeth at least once a week. Use a spe-cial pet toothbrush or fi nger brush and pet toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste or baking soda. Not pet friendly.

H2O additives- There are many all natural products out there that you simply add to your pet’s water. So, as they drink throughout the day they are also cleaning their teeth. Many of my customers have tried this and have had wonderful results. A few great products are made by Triple Pet and Ark Naturals. www.triplepet.com, www.arknaturals.com

Mouth Sprays and Gels- If a toothbrush won’t work, an easier way may be to spray an all natural cleanser in the pet’s mouth or rub a gel on the teeth and gums with your fi nger. The PetZLife oral care gel and spray work wonders. These products are made with Grapefruit seed extract, Grape seed extract, Thyme oil, Neem oil, Rosemary oil, and Peppermint oil. www.petzlife.com This one is easy and highly recommended!

Rope toys and Chew Toys- Believe it or not play time can be a great time to get a bit of teeth cleaning in without your pet realizing it! All the while your dog has no idea that he is doing double duty as he earnestly chews his rope bone.

All Natural Dental Treats and Bones- Make sure that the dental treat you choose is highly digestible and made of all natural products. These treats work but just make sure they will not lodge in your pet’s tummy or intestinal track. Flossie tendons by Mer-rick are wonderful as they help clean in between teeth. They are 100% beef tendon and digestible. Raw bones are great cleaners as well. Make sure the bones you feed your dog are either raw or slow roasted. Bones in any other form may splinter and cause harm to your pet.

Yearly Vet Cleanings- the hope is that by doing a few of the above, you can avoid as many trips to the vet and vet bills. Make sure to work with your vet to ensure pet dental health!

Have a great month and enjoy your pets!
