Around this time each year designers and creatives alike anxiously await the annual announcement from Pantone for the “colour of the year.” I feel confi dent comparing this announcement to the anticipation that a child has waiting for Santa’s arrival. This colour is soon to appear all over the marketplace. This colour affects interior design, fashion, graphic design and much of the print and marketing industry. Pantone, the authority on colour, is described on Wikipedia as a company best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), a proprietary colour space used in a variety of industries, primarily printing, though sometimes in the manufacture of coloured paint, fabric, and plastics. By standardizing the colours, different manufacturers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colours match without direct contact with one another.

If I continue on with my Christmas analogy, I would dare say that this year’s colour announcement was much like receiving a brand new pair of wool socks from Santa…very

disappointing and boring! The colour Marsala is nothing more than a very muddy wine hue. On some items it seems to look like a worn-out, faded version of merlot or burgundy. I am very surprised, as this choice is coming from the same company that brought us past winning choices such as Tangerine Tango, Emerald and Radiant Orchid. They state that Marsala will prove “eye-catching but not overwhelming.” Agreed it is defi nitely not overwhelming! I am prepared to give it a chance though. Trying to always see the positive side, it may grow on me, right? Maybe if the colour was

amped up just a bit with a touch of metallic or complimented by a rich jewel tone, it may just storm the streets after all. I’m really not usually the skeptic in the room, but this time it seems that the entire room is fi lled with skeptics on this colour.
