TEST-TAKING TECHNIQUES

It’s probably been years since you’ve taken an exam, so let’s review a few test-taking techniques. This section will easily add 10 - 15 points to your score.

• Fear is your worst enemy in this exam. You have probably begun the buildup by telling your spouse, significant other, relatives or broker that you’re taking the exam. This compounds the pressure. Now go back and tell them you decided to wait a month. (Seriously - it works!)

• At the beginning of the exam, fear can overcome you and you may miss a high percent of the first 10 questions. You will see this when you take our practice exam. During the Crammer™ course you’ll find that you missed over 50% of the first 10

Page 15: REAL ESTATE SALES LICENSING - Hondros College of … Student Handbook 2016.pdf/22/H… · REAL ESTATE SALES LICENSING ... Here When You Need Us How was your first day of class? ...

15

questions. This is due to the initial anxiety. To avoid this anxiety during the state exam, only answer the questions you are sure of for at least the first 10 questions.

• Get a good night’s sleep. Forget about the all night studying. A good night’s sleep is crucial to test-taking success. Get your rest and eat healthy on exam day.

• Study at the same time each day. Try to study during periods of optimal brain function. (usually between 6-8 pm)

• Don’t change your answer. Trust your instincts! Sometimes second guessing yourself will lead to the wrong answer.

• Eliminate as many answers as possible. Process of elimination can help lead to the correct answer.

• Review your notes. It may be helpful to convert notes into a Word document or another digital format for easy reference.

• Organizing your notes can make it easier to focus on certain subject areas that may require further attention.

• Read all of the answers. Even if you know the correct answer, read each question and answer thoroughly.

• Some questions can be tricky. The longest response is often correct. A response that repeats keywords in the answer is also likely to be correct. Make sure you read through them completely.
