You survived the debt temptations of the holiday season, achieved your personal best in RSP contributions and only had to pay a small amount in additional taxes for the last year. Now you can relax until the whole headache starts again in a few months. But what if you could avoid the hassle by setting up a plan that could help reduce your next end-of-year tax bill? According to John Gallagher, an investment adviser from Desjardins Securities, it’s about how you pay yourself first. For example, when it comes to your registered accounts like an RRSP or a TFSA, your main goal is growth and/or to protect your investment. Plus, these are tax deferred or tax free instruments so there is no immediate concern about the tax implications. “It’s a question of how you choose to invest your money outside of your registered accounts,” said Gallagher. “Making money is easy. Keeping it can be the tricky part. And that’s why it matters how you invest.” To illustrate his point, here are three general tax treatment examples for an individual with an annual income of $85,000 and earning $1,000 of investment income in three different types of investments (using 2014 rates and figures): Earned interest If you earned $1,000 in interest income from a bond or GIC, you have received the most tax inefficient income. At tax filing time, this full amount would be taxed at your marginal tax rate. The taxes on your interest will be calculated like this: $1,000 x your 39.41% marginal income tax rate= $394.10, which would leave you with only $605.90 in interest. Dividends Dividend income receives favourable tax treatment. The reason for this is because it represents after-tax corporate profits which are distributed to shareholders. If you earned $1,000 in corporate dividends, the tax payable is 1,000 x 19.86% special dividend income tax rate = $198.60. Therefore you would be left with $801.40 in dividends, an extra $195.50 in your pocket compared to interest income. Capital gains Most people are familiar with the concept of buy low, sell high. The goal of selling high is to make a profit — or a capital gain. For instance, if you bought some stock or real estate and made a $1,000 profit, your capital gain would be $1,000. Our tax system only requires you to pay tax on half of the gain. So, your $1,000 gain becomes $500 for tax reporting purposes: $500 x 39.41% marginal tax rate = $197.05. Therefore your $1,000 gain leaves you with $802.95 after tax, an extra $197.05 compared to interest income. Canada is a wealthy country with high income tax rates, but many of us pay thousands in additional tax each year because we haven’t structured our investments with tax-efficiency in mind. “Many investors find our tax system very complicated, but a few simple tax-wise steps can keep more money in your pocket,” suggests Gallagher. While these are very general examples, it’s always important to sit down with an investment advisor to discuss what’s best for you. His or her expert advice can help you identify your financial goals and risk tolerance before you start investing. Remember, creating a solid plan can be your most valuable tax-efficient tip. About Domenic Manchisi Wasp Spray

Page 2

A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high-risk area was

concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob

them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local

police department about using pepper spray and they recommended

to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is

a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too

close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily

blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She

keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn’t attract attention

from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one

nearby at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting

and might be of use.

FROM ANOTHER SOURCE

On the heels of a break-in and beating that left an elderly woman dead,

self-defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka, who teaches self-defense to students in high school suggests

putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed.

Glinka says, “This is better than anything I can teach them.”

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than

mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet, so if

someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says, “spray the culprit

in the eyes”. It’s a tip he’s given to students for decades. It’s also one

he wants everyone to hear. “If you’re looking for protection”, Glinka

says, “look to the spray. That’s going to give you a chance to call the

police; maybe get out. Maybe even save a life”. Please share this with

all the people in your life.

I investigated the Manchisi Team because I was drawn

to the elegance and beauty of their marketing. I

chose them after I met Domenic and felt comfortable

with his approach to selling our home. Once we

signed on, Jody moved with incredible speed to

prepare a most attractive package to let people

see our home on the internet, in the newspaper,

and in custom made flyers. Within a day we were

up and for sale! Within 3 days we had an offer with

a great closing date and an acceptable price - this

in a time when the market was slowing. Jody and

Domenic are a great complement to one another

in providing responsive, caring, and professional

support at what can be a most stressful time, selling

your family home.

install swivel stools without backs. These are a great solution, as they can be neatly tucked away after a meal or when homework is done.

Drawer StorageWe often have good intentions when organizing our kitchen drawers, but let’s face it – they’re usually a mess! According to the online remodeling and design platform, Houzz, many homeowners are taking a new approach to kitchen drawer storage and solving space dilemmas by installing customized sliding drawers. One example is an under-sink sliding drawer, which pulls out to provide easy access to cleaning supplies that often get lost behind the pipes. Another popular addition is a built-in utensil drawer. Rather than using traditional horizontal drawers that lead to utensils being piled on and lost in the back, this vertical pullout features a variety of deep cups to hold serving ware. Or, for a more affordable solution, Houzz recommends placing stainless steel pots in a deep empty drawer for a DIY solution. Soon, with these updates you’ll know exactly where that spatula is hiding.

Order in the HouseBeyond the pots and pans, the kitchen becomes a dumping ground for everyday items like the mail, iPads, keys, books, bags, and more. Instead of letting paperwork collect on your island or countertops, create a central command station complete with stylish baskets to hide clutter plus built-in book shelves or mail slots to ensure everything has a proper place. Or, if you have enough space, add a desk as a devoted area for paper storage – as well as a work centre to pay bills or do school work.

With a few simple projects, you can cook up some space in your kitchen and achieve maximum organization and style.

HALTON - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they’ve even given a chance of a showing.

Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression”, and if you want to receive the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make a good first impression.

This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it’s own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision.

A recent study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need)”. This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but to sell for the price you want.

How to order your free copy of this report, visit us online at www.settingyourprice.com

(NC) – It’s the central hub of the home where we do homework, pay bills, charge electronics, surf the web and cook up a meal or two. We spend hours in the kitchen so it’s not surprising that a recent survey from the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence (RICKI) found that four out of five homeowners want to change something about their kitchen. Whether the change you’re seeking is a complete overhaul or a simple update, the following tips and projects can help turn your kitchen from cluttered and chaotic to clean and organized:

Conquer Counters and CabinetsWhile you may not be able to add square footage to your kitchen, there are many ways to conquer clutter and make the room feel larger. Start by clearing off the countertops by placing small appliances or unnecessary items in cupboards or closets. Next, focus on the sink area. Add some fashion and function with a new single-handle pulldown or pullout faucet – and swap the dingy bottle of soap with a permanent soap dispenser. Many of them, like the new premium line from Moen, are available in several designs – modern, transitional and traditional – to coordinate with your new faucet.

Are you tired of the kitchen dish towels lying on the sink or countertop – or worse yet, on the floor? Towel bars, towel rings and hooks are an ideal solution to provide a permanent and convenient home for this kitchen necessity. Other accessories, such as robe hooks, can also be used to hang potholders. Whether mounting on the side of an upper cabinet, on the end of the island, or in other work areas, Moen tells us they also offer a variety of accessories, such as the Boardwalk and Banbury collections that perfectly match their kitchen faucets. And, don’t stop there. Create continuity throughout your updated space with new knobs and drawer pulls that complement your faucets and fixtures. Whether you prefer modern or something more traditional, there are many options available to extend your sense of design down to the details.

Creative Carts and Savvy StoolsAnother option to make your kitchen feel more spacious is to invest in a rolling cabinet or cart. It can be used for storage (for example, hiding those small appliances) or serve as a kitchen island which, when not in use, can be stored in the pantry or closet. And if you are hosting a family get-together or party, you can use the rolling cart as your bar when entertaining guests.

If you already have a kitchen island, you can save even more floor space,
