    Real Estate & Urban Analysis

    Real estate is an applied discipline that utilizes management,economics, marketing, and especially nance principles inthe study o real estate valuation, development, brokerage, andnance. Many areas o the nancial services industryloanorigination and servicing, portolio investment and advisingrequire extensive real estate knowledge.

    As students progress in their real estate careers, they typicallyacquire designations rom and participate in one or moreproessional associations. Among the designations are theMAI (Member o the Appraisal Institute), CCIM (CommercialInvestment Real Estate Institute), GRI & CRS (awarded by theNational Association o Realtors), CRE (American Society oReal Estate Counselors), and CPM (Institute o Real EstateManagement). Among other proessional organizations are theUrban Land Institute (real estate development), the NationalAssociation o Homebuilders, Building Owners and ManagersAssociation, Mortgage Bankers Association o America,International Council o Shopping Centers (shopping centerdevelopment/leasing/management), National Association o

    Corporate Real Estate Executives, National Association oReal Estate Investment Tracts, and the Industrial DevelopmentResearch Council (corporate real estate). The diversity odesignations and organizations refects the variety o careeropportunities in real estate.

    Some components o the real estate business require licensure orcertication. Negotiation o the sale or lease and, in some states,the management o the property o another, requires licensure.State certication or licensure also is required to appraise manyproperties. The real estate program at Ohio State is not designedto prepare the student or a specic career in real estate,although the student can acquire the educational prerequisites orlicensure in Ohio as a salesperson or broker while completing thereal estate major. The real estate program o study is intended to

    contribute to a successul career in any aspect o real estate.

    Pursuing Real Estate & Urban Analysis at Ohio StateStudents interested in business administration as a degree shouldhave a good high school background in mathematics and writtenand oral communication. Experience with computers is helpul.

    Students who come to Ohio State to study business will bedirectly enrolled as pre-business students in the Fisher Collegeo Business i they meet one o the ollowing criteria: a minimumACT composite score o 25, SAT combined Critical Reading andMath scores o 1150, or a rank in the top 20% o their high schoolclass. As a pre-major, students will enter the pre-major advisingprogram within the Fisher College o Business. Those studentsnot eligible to directly enroll in business may enroll in the

    Acceptance into the major and degree candidacy within thecollege is by application. Students may apply to a major programater completing a specied set o courses. Admission o studentswith an overall cumulative point-hour ratio (CPHR) o 3.00 orabove is guaranteed. College academic counselors can provideCPHR inormation or the most recently admitted class.

    New reshman with high ACT or SAT composite test scoresand a high school rank in the upper 10% or acceptance into theUniversity Honors Program may be eligible or direct enrollment inbusiness majors.

    Co-Curricular OpportunitiesThere are many opportunities or students in the Fisher College o Business toenrich and broaden their academic experience. Though internship and co-opsare not required or business students, 85% o students registered with CareerManagement have some kind o internship experience beore they graduate.Many students receive an oer o ull-time employment rom their internshipemployer.

    In addition students are encouraged to explore other opportunities such asstudying abroad. In coordination with the Fisher College o Business, the Oceo International Aairs oers several undergraduate exchanges or studentswishing to study abroad in countries around the world.

    Interested students may also become involved with the Real Estate Club, whichexposes students to various real estate career areas through presentations byreal state proessionals. Students have received employment opportunities as aresult o this networking with companies.

    Honors & Scholars ProgramsFisher College o Business honors students will enrich their academicexperience by participating in the Mitte Honors Program, which includesthe Business Administration Honors Cohort Program, and the BusinessAdministration Honors Contract Program. Honors students who are selected orthese programs and who successully complete the program requirements willgraduate with honors.

    The Honors Business Administration Cohort Program consists o a set osequenced business honors courses that students ollow in a lockstep mannerbeginning in the junior year. The Honors Contract Program consists o anenriched academic plan that is designed by the student and detailed in anhonors contract. Honors students with strong research interests have theopportunity to pursue the Degree with Distinction, a program o research duringthe senior year culminating in a thesis and an oral deense.

    Career Prospects in Real Estate & Urban AnalysisThe real estate major has opportunities or employment with commercial

    banks, savings associations, insurance companies, mortgage bankers, andprivate appraisal and consulting rms. Real estate developers, propertymanagement rms, and residential or commercial and industrial brokerageoces also oer employment. Students may nd employment in corporate realestate departments, ranchise organizations with multiple site requirements,and certain government agencies involved with lending. Many real estategraduates eventually organize their own businesses in one o these elds.

    There is a continuing need or employees in private rms and governmentagencies concerned with developing, appraising, nancing, and merchandisingresidential, commercial, and industrial real estate. Career opportunities inreal estate are expanded by the urbanization o our population and continuedexpansion o opportunities is expected.

    Salaries are largely determined by individual qualications but are usually

    competitive with other proessional business areas. The average starting salaryor business majors in 20072008 was $39,160.

    Curriculum SampleThis is a sample list o classes a student may take topursue a degree in Real Estate and Urban Analysis.Since university students need more than speciceducation in a narrow eld, they also will takeclasses to complete the General Education Curriculum(GEC).
