Ready for Initial SESAR DeploymentThales is supporting new concepts of operations with validated technologies
THALES BRINGS A UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION THANKS TO ITS WORLDWIDE EXPERTISE IN GROUND, AIRBORNE AND SPACE DOMAINS
250 EXPERTS from France, Italy, Australia, Germany, Spain and USA are delivering SESAR technologies.
As the leading industry player in SESAR, a key technology partner for NextGen
and ready for ICAO Aviation System Block Upgrades, Thales aims to ensure global
harmonisation and interoperability.Europe counts over 440 airports, which together handle close to 26,000 flights a day and more than 1.4 billion passengers a year. To address the inevitable congestion of our skies, outdated technologies and the future ATM challenges in Europe, the European Commission launched the Single European Sky initiative. SESAR is the technological dimension of the initiative that will deliver technological solutions, functionalities and systems, and will prepare standards for deployment in Europe.
Thales strongly believes that SESAR is a key programme for a safe evolution of ATM.
Present since the beginning of SESAR, Thales has contributed to the definition of the European ATM Master Plan that describes the concepts and principles of the future European ATM network.
Thales brings 34% of the total manufacturing industry contribution, almost double that of the second manufacturing industry contributor.
WORLD’S FIRST INITIAL 4D TEST FLIGHT
In the first step to more predictable flights, Thales played an essential role in the ambitious SESAR i4D live trial in 2012. Initial 4D is about airspace users agreeing on the detailed trajectory for a flight in four dimensions: lateral, longitudinal, vertical and time. Trajectory information is exchanged and time constraints are agreed at specific waypoints.
TopSky - ATC seamlessly exchanged trajectory information via datalink with Thales’s latest generation FMS300 onboard the Airbus A320 test aircraft. During the live trial, the aircraft met all the time constraints elaborated and negotiated with the ground ATC systems.
Thales has built a strong cooperation with Noracon, Airbus and EUROCONTROL for the i4D live trial.
With i4D, air traffic will become more efficient, and pilots and air traffic controllers will see their workload reduced in TMA operations. There will be a positive impact on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
SUCCESSFUL INITIAL AIRPORT VALIDATIONS
Thales has installed its complete TopSky - Tower Industry Based Platform at Charles de Gaulle Airport, the busiest in Europe in aircraft movements. Connected to DSNA’s 360° Tower Simulator, Thales has been working together with air traffic controllers to validate future SESAR concepts.
Departure and surface management integration, routing and controller HMI have already been validated. D-Taxi, safety nets, weather activities, wake vortex and integration with approach control are also being validated at CDG.
These validations will make airports safer, eco-efficient and more fluid. Tower controllers will be working on more ergonomic, intuitive and human-centric working positions.
Validations at Charles de Gaulle Airport are made possible thanks to the strong collaboration between Thales and DSNA.
“ I am confident that the deployment of SESAR will support the necessary improvements of the ATM network from 2014 onwards to cope with capacity needs.”
Siim Kallas, European Commission Vice-President Responsible for Transport, 2012
Traffic is expected to double by 2030
Air Transport’s impact on the environment should be reduced
Operational costs should be cut back
...while safety must remain the priority.
