CRB Artist Career Achievement Award. CRB Exec. Dir. Bill Mayne’s introduction was commandeered by surprise guests Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. “This town is full of some very talented people, and some very nice people,” said Brooks. “To find somebody who’s very talented and nice, there’s only a handful.” “I don’t like him,” deadpanned Yearwood. “First of all, I would like to thank all the little people I’ve stepped on along the way,” joked Wariner. “Around the age of 12, I realized that making music was what I wanted to do for the rest

of my life. ... I am so thankful to each and every Music Director, every DJ, every consultant who ever added or played my music. There are so many artists way more deserving of this award – but none who could ever be more appreciative.” “Two quick questions,” asked Steve Harmon, formerly of KPLX/Dallas and WXTU/Philadelphia’s Harmon & Evans. “Can this induction be revoked? And, does this mean I don’t have to work anymore?” The duo’s acceptance speech was a trip down memory lane, with Scott Evans recalling doing in-stores and going hat shopping with a then-unknown Garth Brooks. “What many managers hope from a morning show team is that one and one equals three,” says Harmon. “It doesn’t always happen. But for me, it happened. A guy who found a way to make me laugh for 18 years at six in the morning, my friend Scott Evans.” Added Evans, “We will be eternally grateful to the committee who decided we were worthy of this incredible honor.”

KKNU/Eugene, OR’s Bill Barrett, Tim Fox and Tracy Ber-ry (Barrett, Fox And Berry) shined the spotlight on their listeners. “We are with them every day sharing our lives with them,” said Barrett. “And they in turn do the same. That’s the beauty of local, live radio – connecting with people and being of service. It’s great to get up in the morning with a sense of purpose. Radio has given me that.” “I thank all of you in this industry for recognizing small-mar-ket, locally owned Country radio,” said Berry. Fox added, “We will keep doing this until we’ve had the perfect show. It’s been 21 years so far and we haven’t had it yet.” Albright, O’Malley & Brenner’s Michael O’Malley focused his acceptance on the importance of being a mentor. “How much time do we spend on the phone with each other, trying to find the next great talent? And we wind up [saying], ‘Ah geez, the talent’s just not what it used to be.’ Mentoring and being committed to that could change everything. Thanks to all of you who have set the standard and raised the bar high. I hope I lived up to your expectations and your goals.” Chris Ritchie and Alison Mencer (formerly WIVK/Knox-ville’s Andy & Alison) remembered their humble beginnings – Ritchie, whose first radio job included reading obituaries on the air, and Mencer, who answered a newspaper ad for a station re-ceptionist and worked her way up through the ranks. “It’s amazing that one decision I made 33 years ago brought me to this point right now,” said Mencer. “I was a single mom waiting on tables at Ruby Tuesdays, when I got a call saying I’d bounced another rent check. I knew I had to make a change.” Ritchie reminisced about asking former WIVK VP/GM, the late Bobby Denton, for money to paint Mencer’s house Tennessee Vols orange while she was on vacation. “I said we needed $4,000 to paint it and another $2,000 to fix it when she gets pissed off about it. We were busted on that one before we got it done – but Bobby approved the idea.” The late Lisa McKay (former Curtis Media/Raleigh VP/Programming and WQDR PD) was inducted by Curtis Pres./COO Trip Savery and her partner Bill Campbell. Savery nominated McKay for the Hall after ‘QDR won its third CMA Station of the Year award last fall. “When I made

that nomination, none of us knew that within two months of that CMA award, we’d lose her, and as quickly as we did.” “I would like you to look at Lisa right now,” said Campbell, pointing to McKay’s photo on a projection screen sidestage. “If she were here tonight, the first thing she would say is, ‘Seven dollars for a beer?’ She would be so proud. She won a lot of awards, but she didn’t do it to win awards – she just loved the competition.” Campbell said McKay’s liver cancer diagnosis came only three weeks before she died. “Three days before she passed away, we were at our last visit with the doctor. He said, ‘You have about three days to maybe two weeks to live.’ And Lisa sat up in the bed and said, ‘You know I’m an organ donor.’ The doctor said, ‘Your body’s riddled with cancer. We can’t take your organs.’ And Lisa jokingly said, ‘Ah, another dream shattered.’ To which the doctor laughed. I know a lot of you know Lisa and didn’t get to say goodbye. But when told she had three days to live, her first reaction was to say, ‘I’m an organ donor. I can help somebody else.’ That’s the Lisa McKay Blake I’d like you to remember.” –Wendy Newcomer

People Persons: Perhaps no major market Country program-mer understands that more than Cox/Houston Dir./Operations Johnny Chiang. The 27-year company veteran attributes that successful tenure in large part to skills he developed in his early 20s as a producer for then-CBS Radio News/Talk KNX-AM. “I learned so much,” he says. “It was the talents’ show, but I did my best every day to contribute. I would send them show ideas every single night, back then by fax.” More than anything, the job taught Chiang how to manage people. “I learned how to work with different personalities, and how to work with and coach talent,” he says, noting the unique dynamic he faced at the time. “It was the first major market talk show where the two primary talent were women. And the weather and news guy was married to one of the women. Just imagine the balancing act I had to play: babysitter, psychiatrist, everything.” The biggest single lesson: “You can’t treat everyone the same,” Chiang says. “You have to figure out what each person’s per-sonalities are like and what their hot buttons are in order to be

(continued from page 1)Morning Producer Hat Trick (Pt. 2)

effective. I got to learn that when I was 21, so it was invaluable. It really helped me take the next step to managing an entire team.” Breaking & Entering: The job of producer is often seen as an entry-level position and in most cases it is. Still, talent and pro-grammers agree that there are specifics to look for when hiring. “You don’t want a producer who thinks like you,” Lindsey offers. “Yes, it’s an intimate relationship and they need to understand you, but my ideas aren’t always the greatest even though I think they are. It’s important to have somebody who can say, ‘I don’t know about that. What if we did this?’” Lindsey points to his relationship with King, who’s approaching his 120-day mark with the show, as a prime example. “We couldn’t be more different,” Lindsey continues. “He is as liberal as they come [and thinks] everybody gets a participation trophy or should. I’m about as conservative as they come. But we do have the same values when it comes to work ethic and quality of the show.”Navigating differences isn’t easy in any relationship, much less one with talent-size egos. “That’s the toughest thing, especially if you haven’t worked with a producer before,” Lindsey grants. “You’ve just got to talk it out – hyper communication I call it. The worst thing a morning show and its producer can do is not talk to each other.” The PD can help. “My role is to keep the team happy and healthy,” says Entercom/Houston and KILT VP/Programming Bruce Logan. “So I do one-on-ones with each member so I can referee any grievances or mild irritations.”When it comes to hiring, Logan is interested more in organiza-tional chops than the ability to deliver content. “Above all else the morning show producer should be organized,” he says. “Their primary job is keeping the show on track and focused. While every

show is different, I don’t usually look to the producer to direct content. That should be coming from the hosts. But the producer helps in making sure nothing important is missed.” Flexibility is important, too. “Tim and I have been together for 26 years, so we know each other’s strengths and how to adapt to each other,” offers KKBQ morning co-host Kevin Kline. “New producers are coming in to a new situation, so they have to be able to adjust us quickly. “ Point Of Interview: Given his own history in the position, it’s not surprising how seriously Chiang approaches the hiring pro-cess. “I like to ask what they want to do,” he says. “I’d rather hear someone say they like to be behind the scenes; that they’d rather be the king maker rather than the king. Maybe I’m biased that way, but the last thing I need is a producer who wants to be bigger than the star they’re producing.” The interview unfolds from there. “I say things like, ‘You listen to the show. What would you do with it?’” Chiang continues. “And if they can honestly and coherently describe the role of each mem-ber of the morning show to me, that’s important.” Logan says it’s also important for members of the show to get a say. “A morning show is cast similar to a TV sitcom, so it’s important that all the pieces fit together,” Logan adds. “With that

said, I allow great influence from the show on who the producer is because we are adding a person to their ‘family.’” Finally, Chiang says programmers should recognize they’re hiring for the short term. “It’s a tough gig,” he explains. “Unless you’re an executive producer for Stern, you’re not making a ton of money. And to wake up at two or three in the morning to go deal with prima donna talent? It gets old quick.” Sage Advice: As for those interested in becoming a producer, “Be honest with yourself,” Chiang counsels. “Think about your everyday life. If you have to be the center of attention and it kills you when you’re not, then maybe this job is not for you.” On the other hand, Chiang notes, a fondness for building things can be a positive. “What I would say then is get yourself into a radio station as an intern or maybe on the promotions team,” he continues. “Then go hang out with the PD and with the morning show.” There’s advice for management and talent, too. “If you’re a PD, GM or morning show talent and think a producer is nothing more than a board op or a coffee fetcher, you’re missing out,” Chiang concludes. “You have an opportunity to grow someone to help you. The position is what you make of it.” Reach Tuttle and Kline through their producer here, Lindsey here, Logan here and Chiang here. CAC
