Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

We are coming to the end of the week of prayer for Christian unity. Every year, there is a week in January that is dedicated to prayer asking God for the gift of unity among Christians.Divisions among Christians are a scandalous counter witness, because they are in direct contradiction with the words of Jesus Christ, that all his disciples may be one. For that reason, throughout the history of the Church, Catholics have worked diligently to prevent and heal divisions within the Church. Sometimes, the means were not appropriate and ended up backfiring, but the aim was always to bring unity where there was division.Up until the XX century, the efforts in the Catholic Church to restore unity among Christians were, for the most part, an “ecumenism of return”; those who had left the Church were expected to come back. In the past century and definitely after the Second Vatican Council, there has been a change in the attitude of the Church towards other Christian denominations and ecclesial communities with greater emphasis on the real, albeit imperfect com-munion that already exists because of Baptism.Indeed, the sacrament of Baptism establishes a strong bond of communion between all the baptized. A bond that is real, but imperfect because some Christians do not confess the faith of the Church. The dignity of the sacrament of baptism cannot be underestimated. In fact, the Council of Trent, which was con-vened at the time of the Protestant reformation, unequivocally established and solemnly declared that baptism among Protestants was valid. The use of water, the Trinitarian formula and the intention to do what the Church does is enough to validly celebrate Baptism. So much so, that the Church teaches that in extreme circumstances, such as imminent death, anybody can baptize and in not too distant times, Catholic nurses and midwives were trained so that if a newborn child was dying or in imminent danger of death, they could baptize him or her.This communion among Christians is also made manifest, as St. John Paul II and his successors have noted several times, in the testimony of martyrs and confessors who were put to death or suffered for confessing Christ, independently of their Christian denomination. St. Charles Lwanga and his companions were put to death in Uganda together with some Anglican Christians be-cause of their Christian faith. Blessed Franz Jagerstatter, an Austrian Catholic farmer, and Dietrich Bonheoffer, a Protestant minister, were put to death in Nazi Germany because of their Christian faith. Orthodox Christians and Catholic Christians are persecuted, harassed and put to death in the Middle East because of their faith in Christ. Christians of all denominations are harassed and incarcerated in China because of their faith. The examples abound in our times and throughout the history of the Church.This communion in Baptism and in martyrdom highlights the communion that already exists among Christians. Sadly, however, there are also differences that cannot be glossed over but need a frank and open conversation in order to be solved. That is the purpose of Ecumenical dialogue. In the second half of the XX Century there has been a lot of progress in the Ecumenical dialogue with the Orthodox Churches and with the ecclesial communities that were born of the Protestant reformation. Our beloved Pope emeritus Benedict XVI was instrumental in advancing this dialogue through his work under St. John Paul II and also his own initiatives as successor of Peter. An impor-tant milestone was reached in 1999, when Lutherans and Catholics signed a joint declaration that put an end to disputes about grace and justification. Pope Benedict also created a Personal Ordinariate for Anglicans and Episco-palians who desire to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. This innovative, pastoral and loving so-lution found by the Pope enables them to keep their identity and all of the traditions that had emerged since Henry VIII’s break with the Church that are not contrary to the Catechism. Another important milestone was reached in 2013 when for the first time in modern history an Ecumenical Patriarch attended the Solemn Mass of the begin-ning of the Pontificate of Pope Francis. Since the last century progress in the road to full, visible and perfect communion has been so remarkable that this year, Lutherans and Catholics will mark together the 500th anniversary of the Protestant reformation. Something that seemed impossible at that time when Christians were fighting wars of religion in Europe, will be possible be-cause of the atmosphere of fraternal dialogue that now reigns among the Catholic Church and mainline Protestant denominations.Notwithstanding these remarkable achievements to undo the wounds of division caused by the sin of Christians, there is still a long way to go and we ought never forget that unity among the disciples of Christ is a gift of the Holy Spirit and will not come about simply because of human efforts, let alone by minimizing or denying the differences that still exist. That is why it is so important to pray for the gift of Christian unity, otherwise we run the risk of repeating some errors of the past when attempts were made to restore unity by human means, including the use of force.Ecumenism, which is the work to restore unity and full communion among Christians, is not the search for the least common denominator, but a search for truth in love. It will not come about through Irenism, a denial of the real and profound differences that separate us, but through patient and painstaking dialogue where truth emerges and full communion is restored as a gift of the Holy Spirit.In the Ecumenical dialogue, prayer is the first step towards unity, the most urgent need, because it opens our minds and hearts to truth and helps us to put on the mind and heart of Christ who prayed that we may all be one as He and the Father are one.

Wenski and the Office of Marriage and Family Life invite all couples in the Archdiocese of Miami celebrating their 25th or 50th and above wed-ding anniversaries this year to join us for a special Mass on Saturday, February 14th 2015 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral. There will be a photo session with Arch-bishop Wenski starting at 4:00 p.m. before the Mass. Certificates will be distributed after Mass. To register to participate, please contact your parish directly by Feb-ruary 3rd 2015.

LA MISA ANUAL DE ANIVERSARIOS DE BODAS de PLATA, ORO y MAS

El Arzobispo Thomas G. Wenski y la Oficina de Matrimonio y Vida Familiar invitan a todos los matrimonios de la Arquidiócesis de Miami celebrando sus 25, 50 o más años de matrimonio este año a participar en una Misa especial que celebrará el Sábado 14 de febrero del 2015, a las 5:30pm en la Catedral de St. Mary. Se realizará un sesión de fotografía con el Arzobispo Wenski, comenzando a las 4:00 p.m antes de la Misa. Los certificados se distribuirán después de la Misa. Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Estamos llegando al fin de la semana de oración por la unidad de los cristianos. Todos los años se destina una se-mana en enero para rezar para pedirle a Dios el don de la unidad entre los cristianos.Las divisiones entre los cristianos son un anti-testimonio escandaloso porque están en directa contradicción con las palabras de Jesucristo que desea que sus discípulos sean uno. Por ese motivo, a través de la historia de la Iglesia, los católicos han trabajado con gran diligencia para prevenir y sanar las divisiones dentro del seno de la Iglesia. A veces los medios usados fueron inadecuados y terminaron causando mayores problemas, pero el objetivo siempre era resta-blecer la unidad donde había división.Hasta el siglo XX, los mayores esfuerzos en la Iglesia Católica para restablecer la unidad entre los cristianos se basa-ban en un “ecumenismo de retorno” por el cual se esperaba que aquellos que habían dejado la Iglesia volvieran. Du-rante el siglo pasado y definitivamente a partir del Concilio Vaticano II ha habido un cambio en la actitud de la Iglesia hacia otras denominaciones cristianas y comunidades eclesiales con mayor énfasis en la comunión real, aunque imperfecta, que ya existe a causa del Bautismo.Así es, el sacramento del Bautismo establece un vínculo muy fuerte de comunión entre todos los bautizados. Ese vín-culo es real, pero imperfecto porque algunos cristianos no confiesan la fe de la Iglesia.La dignidad del sacramento del Bautismo no puede subestimarse. De hecho, el Concilio de Trento, que fue convocado en tiempos de la Reforma protestante, estableció de manera inequívoca y declaró solemnemente que el bautismo de los protestantes era válido. El uso del agua, la fórmula Trinitaria y la intención de hacer lo que hace la Iglesia es sufi-ciente para celebrar el Bautismo. Tan es así, que la Iglesia enseña que en circunstancias extremas, como la inminen-cia de la muerte, cualquiera puede bautizar y en tiempos no muy lejanos, las enfermeras y parteras católicas recibían entrenamiento para bautizar a niños recién nacidos que se encontraran en inminente peligro de muerte.Esta comunión entre los cristianos también queda de manifiesto, como lo han señalado san Juan Pablo II y sus sucesores en numerosas ocasiones, en el testimonio de los mártires y confesores que fueron asesinados o sufrieron por su fidelidad a Cristo, independientemente de la confesión a la que pertenecieran.San Carlos Luanga y sus compañeros fueron asesinados en Uganda junto con otros cristianos anglicanos a causa de su fe cristiana. El beato Franz Jagerstatter, un agricultor católico austríaco, y Dietrich Bonhoffer, un ministro protes-tante alemán, fueron asesinados en Alemania Nazi a causa de su fe cristiana. Los cristianos ortodoxos y católicos son perseguidos, hostigados y asesinados en el Medio Oriente a causa de su fe en Cristo. En China hostigan y encarcelan cristianos de todas las confesiones a causa de su fe. Abundan los ejemplos en nuestra época y a través de la historia de la Iglesia.Esta comunión en el Bautismo y en el martirio destaca la comunión que ya existe entre los cristianos.Lamentablemente, no obstante esto, hay diferencias que no pueden desestimarse sino que requieren una conversación para poder resolverlas. Ese es el objetivo del diálogo ecuménico. En la segunda mitad del siglo XX ha habido grandes progresos en el diálogo ecuménico con las Iglesias Ortodoxas y con las comunidades eclesiales que nacieron de la Re-forma protestante. El amado papa emérito Benedicto XVI fue instrumental para el avance de este diálogo merced a su trabajo con san Juan Pablo II y también sus propias iniciativas como sucesor de Pedro. Un hito importante se alcanzó en 1999 cuando los luteranos y los católicos firmaron una declaración conjunta que puso fin a las disputas sobre la gracia y la justificación. El papa Benedicto también creó un Ordinariato personal para los anglicanos y episcopales que desearan entrar en comunión con la Iglesia Católica. Esta solución innovadora, pastoral y amorosa que encontró el Papa les permite mantener su identidad y todas las tradiciones que no son contrarias al Catecismo que aparecieron desde que Enrique VIII rompió con la Iglesia. Otro hito importante se alcanzó en el año 2013 cuando por primera vez en la historia moderna el Patriarca Ecuménico asistió a la Misa solemne del inicio del pontificado del Papa Francisco.Desde el siglo pasado ha habido progresos asombrosos en el camino hacia la comunión plena, visible y perfecta, a tal punto que este año los luteranos y los católicos vamos a recordar juntos el 500 aniversario de la Reforma protestante. Algo que parecía impensable en aquel momento, cuando los cristianos peleaban guerras de religión en Europa, será posible gracias a la atmósfera de diálogo fraterno que reina ahora entre la Iglesia Católica y las principales confesiones protestantes.A pesar de estos logros fabulosos en el intento de sanar las heridas de la división de los cristianos causadas por el pecado, hay un largo camino a recorrer y no debemos olvidar que el camino a la unidad entre los discípulos de Cristo es un don del Espíritu Santo y no se producirá simplemente por el esfuerzo humano y, mucho menos si negamos o minimizamos las diferencias que existen. Por eso es tan importante rezar por el don de la unidad de los cristianos. De lo contrario, corremos el riesgo de repetir algunos errores del pasado cuando se hicieron intentos por restablecer la unidad que incluyeron el recurso a la fuerza.El ecumenismo, que es el trabajo para restablecer la unidad y la plena comunión entre los cristianos no es la búsque-da del mínimo común denominador, sino una búsqueda de la verdad en el amor. No vendrá como fruto del Irenismo, una negación de las diferencias profundas y reales que nos separan, sino a través de un diálogo paciente y laborioso en el que la verdad emerja y la comunión plena se restablezca como don del Espíritu Santo.En el diálogo ecuménico, la oración es el primer paso hacia la unidad, el más urgente, porque abre nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones a la verdad y modela nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones a imagen de Cristo que rezó para que fuéramos uno como El y el Padre son uno.

One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity

Together, as one family of God, we continue to build the Kingdom of God here in South Florida. Because of you and your stewardship through the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), in the past year alone, you are helping to train the largest group of seminarians the Archdiocese has enjoyed in many years; through ABCD you are assisting our most needy Catholic elementary and high schools, and you are continuing to support the evangelization efforts within our migrant community in south Dade. Thanks to your support of ABCD our Respect Life ministry continues to grow, and we continue to minister to the seafarers and at the airports. These are extraordinary accomplishments – all made possible because of you!

If you have not already responded to the letter sent to you by Archbishop Thomas Wenski received by mail, please take time to consider your pledge for this year. Your faithful and generous participation in the ABCD flows from God’s many blessings to you and to those you hold dear. Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza, Unidos en la Caridad

Juntos, como una sola familia de Dios, continuamos construyendo el Reino de Dios en el Sur de La Florida. Gracias a ustedes y a la mayordomía que han ejercido por medio de la Campaña de Caridades y Desarrollo del Arzobispo (ABCD), tan sólo en el año pasado se ha ayudado a preparar el mayor grupo de seminaristas del que la Arquidiócesis haya disfru-tado en muchos años; a través del ABCD, ustedes están ayudando a nuestras escuelas pri-marias y secundarias católicas más necesitadas, y ustedes siguen apoyando los esfuerzos de evangelización dentro de nuestra comunidad de migrantes en el sur de Dade. Gracias a su ayuda al ABCD, nuestro ministerio de Respeto a la Vida sigue creciendo, y seguimos sirviendo espiritualmente al personal marítimo y de los aeropuertos. Estos son logros ex-traordinarios, y todos han sido posibles gracias a ustedes!
