Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Chapter 15 in the Gospel according to John is one passage that appears frequently in my personal prayer. In it, the Lord Jesus calls you and me “friends”. He no longer calls us servants but, friends. He goes on to say that we are his friends if we do what He commands and that there is no greater love than this, to give up one’s life for a friend. Of course he shows by his own Passion and Death that He is truly our friend. He gives up His life that we may have life eternal.

The Gospel reading this Sunday is taken from that chapter. It includes the first few verses where the Lord refers to Himself as the “true vine”, exhorting us to remain in Him, to remain in communion with Him, for without Him, we can do nothing.The notion of remaining in Him also appears very prominently in the First Letter of John from which the second reading for the last couple of Sundays, including this one, is taken.Incidentally, when I was learning Biblical Greek at the Seminary, Fr. Bauer our instructor assigned the First Letter of John as a reading because it was the easiest to read due to the fact that the verb “to remain” appears in all its tenses and voices, thus making it a good practice for novices in the language.To remain in the Lord, who claims to be the true vine, and indeed is, is a must for us. Not only are we too weak, too frail, too feeble, but the most important project in our lives which is holiness, because it lasts for all eternity, is only possible if we remain in the love of God. Every other human project or aspiration has a limited span. Everything else is fleeting, passing, but the love of God remains. In fact, it is the love of God that makes eternal life possible for us. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, a great mystic and martyr of the 20th Century, used to say, “love is our eternal life” and so it is. God created us out of love. He willed into being each and every one of us for our own sake. He de-sires to share with us his own divine life for all eternity. Since God is love and we are created to share in his life for all eternity, it follows that the saying of this great Carmelite mystic of the 20th century is absolutely true!In order for sainthood, the most important project of our lives, to be realized we need to remain in him who loved us first and we do so by keeping his commandments. Not because we may earn his love by being virtuous, but simply because being virtuous enables us to grow in communion with him.

Goodness, beauty and truth are attributes of being. God is the one who is and the source of everything that exists. He created us all. Therefore God is not only good but goodness itself; not only beautiful, but beauty itself; not only truthful but truth itself. When the Lord, also in the Gospel according to John, claims to be the way, the truth and the life, he is essentially claiming to be God. He does not say, “I give life” or “I tell the truth.” He is claiming for himself the attributes of being. Of course, this claim is credible because it is validated by his Resurrection, a fact that we celebrate with special intensity during this Easter season.

To be good, to be truthful, to embrace beauty is to deepen our communion with God, because every good deed, ev-erything that is beautiful, everything that is true has God as its source. That is why keeping his commandments is key to remaining in him, because it brings us closer to him, we participate of his own attributes by living them out in our lives and in doing it, we open ourselves to the action of the Spirit. We know that the ultimate goal of this action of the Spirit is eternal communion with God and so when we practice virtue, when we embrace truth and beauty we are preparing the way of the Lord so that He may come into our hearts and bring us to perfect communion with Him.This weekend the first group of children making their First Holy Communion in our parish this year, will receive the Eucharist for the first time. It is no accident that we refer to the Eucharist as “receiving communion,” because sharing in it is the most intimate form of union with God in this world. We are literally receiving into our bodies, the Body and Blood of Christ. When we receive the consecrated host we are receiving all of his humanity and all of his divinity. We are entering into communion with his Body and Blood. That is why we need to prepare ourselves. Chil-dren prepare to receive communion for the first time through catechesis and all of us prepare to receive communion every time we go to Mass by examining our conscience and going to Confession if we are aware of a serious sin, so that the bonds of communion that were severed by our actions may be restored.To remain in the Lord, to be close to the one who calls us friends, to dwell in his house for all eternity, to abide in his love when everything else has passed away, that is our hope and the end goal of our existence.

PALABRAS DEL PARROCOQueridos hermanos en Cristo:

El capítulo 15 del Evangelio según san Juan es un pasaje que aparece muy seguido en mi oración personal. En él, el Señor Jesús nos llama a Uds. y a mi “amigos”. Ya no nos llama siervos sino amigos. También nos dice que somos sus amigos si hacemos lo que Él manda y que no hay amor más grande que el que da la vida por sus amigos. Por supuesto que demuestra hasta que punto es nuestro amigo con su Pasión y Muerte. Da su vida para que tengamos vida eterna.

La lectura del Evangelio de este domingo está tomada de ese capítulo. Incluye los primeros versículos en los que el Señor se llama a sí mismo la “vid verdadera” y nos exhorta a permanecer en Él, a permanecer en comunión con Él porque sin Él no podemos hacer nada.La idea de permanecer en Él también aparece con gran prominencia en la Primera carta de Juan de la que está tomada la segunda lectura de los últimos domingos, incluido éste.Dicho sea de paso, cuando tomaba clase de griego bíblico en el seminario, el p. Bauer, nuestro instructor, asignó para la lectura la Primera carta de Juan porque era la más fácil para leer y también porque el verbo “permanecer” aparece en todos los tiempos y todas las voces, lo que hace que sea una buena práctica para un novicio en esa lengua.

Permanecer en el Señor, que afirma ser la vid verdadera, y de hecho lo es, es una necesidad para nosotros. No sola-mente somos muy débiles, muy frágiles, muy vulnerables, sino que el proyecto más importante de nuestra vida, que es la santidad, porque dura para toda la eternidad, es únicamente posible si permanecemos en el amor de Dios. Todo otro proyecto o aspiración humana tiene un horizonte limitado. Todo lo demás pasa, desaparece, pero el amor de Dios queda. De hecho, es el amor de Dios lo que hace posible la vida eterna. Sta. Teresa Benedicta de la Cruz, una gran mística y mártir del siglo XX, decía “el amor es nuestra vida eterna” y lo es de verdad. Dios nos creó por amor. Deseó nuestra existencia por nosotros mismos. Desea compartir con nosotros su vida misma para toda la eternidad. Dado que Dios es amor y que hemos sido creados para compartir su vida para toda la eternidad, podemos deducir que esta gran mística Carmelita del siglo XX estaba absolutamente en lo cierto con su afirmación.

Para realizar en nuestras vidas el proyecto más importante, la santidad, tenemos que permanecer en aquel que nos amó primero y lo hacemos cumpliendo sus mandamientos. No es que nos ganemos su amor con la vida virtuosa, sino que simplemente siendo virtuosos crecemos en comunión con El.El bien, la belleza, la verdad son atributos del ser. Dios es aquel que es y la fuente de todo lo que existe. Nos creó a todos. Por lo tanto, Dios no es sólo bueno, sino que es el bien mismo; no es solamente bello, sino la belleza misma; no es solamente verdadero, sino la verdad misma. Cuando el Señor, también en el Evangelio según san Juan, afirma ser el camino, la verdad y la vida, está sencillamente haciéndose Dios. No dice, “doy la vida” o, “digo la verdad”. Esta afirmando de sí mismo los atributos del ser. Por supuesto que esta pretensión es creíble porque ha sido validada por su Resurrección, un hecho que celebramos con especial intensidad en el tiempo Pascual.Ser bueno, ser veraz, abrazar la belleza es profundizar nuestra comunión con Dios, porque toda obra buena, todo lo que es bello, todo lo que es verdadero tiene a Dios como su origen. Por eso cumplir los mandamientos es clave para permanecer en Él, porque nos acerca a Él. Participamos de sus mismos atributos viviéndolos cotidianamente y al hacerlo nos abrimos a la acción del Espíritu. Sabemos que el objetivo final de esta acción del Espíritu es la comu-nión eterna con Dios y por eso cuando practicamos la virtud, cuando abrazamos la verdad y la belleza preparamos el camino del Señor para que venga a nuestros corazones y nos lleve a la plena comunión con Él.Este fin de semana, el primer grupo de niños de nuestra parroquia que este año toman la primera comunión, reci-birá la Eucaristía por primera vez. No es casualidad que nos refiramos a la Eucaristía como “recibir la comunión”, porque al hacerlo entramos en íntima unión con Dios la mayor que puede realizarse en este mundo. Literalmente estamos recibiendo en nuestros cuerpos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Cuando recibimos la hostia consagrada, recibimos toda su humanidad y toda su divinidad. Entramos en comunión con su Cuerpo y su Sangre. Por eso hay que prepararse. Los niños se preparan para la primera comunión a través de la catequesis y todos nos prepara-mos para recibir la comunión cada vez que vamos a Misa con un examen de conciencia y la Confesión si estamos conscientes de un pecado grave, para que los vínculos de comunión que fueron cortados por nuestro pecado sean restablecidos.Permanecer en el Señor, estar cerca de quien nos llama amigos, quedarse en su casa para toda la eternidad, quedar en su amor cuando todo lo demás ha pasado, esa es nuestra esperanza y el fin ultimo de nuestra existencia.
