BOOK CLUB: Our Book Club meets every other Thursday to discuss a book that every member is reading. The books we choose to read have a catechetical purpose, help us to grow in our faith through deeper theologizal insights, inspir-ing biographies or classics that allow for a reflection some aspect of our humanity in light of the Gospel.

We will be reading Dear and glorious physician; a historical novel about St. Luke by Taylor Caldwell. The next meeting will take place on September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rectory.

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Last week I shared with you a fragment of the speech delivered by Mother Teresa at the National Prayer Breakfast in 1994, where she spoke as a guest of the President of the United States. This Sunday she will be canonized by Pope Francis and since I received many favorable comments I will offer the rest of the speech to associate ourselves to the joy of the Universal Church which will celebrate for the first time this Monday the memorial of St. Teresa of Calcutta.“I can never forget the experience I had in visiting a home where they kept all these old parents of sons and daugh-ters who had just put them into an institution and forgotten them - maybe. I saw that in that home these old people had everything - good food, comfortable place, television, everything, but everyone was looking toward the door. And I did not see a single one with a smile on the face. I turned to Sister and I asked: "Why do these people who have every comfort here, why are they all looking toward the door? Why are they not smiling?"I am so used to seeing the smiles on our people, even the dying ones smile.

And Sister said: "This is the way it is nearly every day. They are expecting, they are hoping that a son or daughter will come to visit them. They are hurt because they are forgotten." And see, this neglect to love brings spiritual poverty. Maybe in our own family we have somebody who is feeling lonely, who is feeling sick, who is feeling worried. Are we there? Are we there to be with them, or do we merely put them in the care of others? Are we will-ing to give until it hurts in order to be with our families, or do we put our own interests first? These are the ques-tions we must ask ourselves, especially as we begin this year of the family. We must remember that love begins at home and we must also remember that "the future of humanity passes through the family."I was surprised in the West to see so many young boys and girls given to drugs. And I tried to find out why. Why is it like that, when those in the West have so many more things than those in the East? And the answer was: "Because there is no one in the family to receive them." Our children depend on us for everything - their health, their nutrition, their security, their coming to know and love God. For all of this, they look to us with trust, hope and expectation. But often father and mother are so busy they have no time for their children, or perhaps they are not even married or have given up on their marriage. So the children go to the streets and get involved in drugs or other things. We are talking of love of the child which is where love and peace must begin. These are the things that break peace.But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.

By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems.And, by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion.Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.Many people are very, very concerned with the children of India, with the children of Africa where quite a few die of hunger, and so on. Many people are also concerned about all the violence in this great country of the United States. These concerns are very good. But often these same people are not concerned with the millions who are being killed by the deliberate decision of their own mothers. And this is what is the greatest destroyer of peace today - abortion which brings people to such blindness.And for this I appeal in India and I appeal everywhere - "Let us bring the child back." The child is God's gift to the family. Each child is created in the special image and likeness of God for greater things - to love and to be loved. In this year of the family we must bring the child back to the center of our care and concern. This is the only way that our world can survive because our children are the only hope for the future. As older people are called to God, only their children can take their places.But what does God say to us? He says: "Even if a mother could forget her child, I will not forget you. I have carved you in the palm of my hand." We are carved in the palm of His hand; that unborn child has been carved in the hand of God from conception and is called by God to love and to be loved, not only now in this life, but forever. God can never forget us.”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

La semana pasada compartí con Uds. un fragmento del discurso pronunciado por Madre Teresa en el National Prayer Breakfast de 1994, cuando habló invitada por el Presidente de Estados Unidos.El Papa Francisco la canonizará este domingo y como he recibido muchos comentarios favorables, ofrezco el resto del discurso como forma de asociarnos al gozo de la Iglesia universal que este lunes celebrará por primera vez el memorial de Sta. Teresa de Calcuta. “No puedo olvidar la experiencia que tuve visitando una casa en la que había muchos padres ancianos cuyos hijos e hijas los habían puesto en esa institución y quizás se habían olvidado de ellos. Veía que en esa casa los ancianos tenían de todo, buena comida, un lugar agradable, televisión, todo, pero todos miraban hacia la puerta. No vi ni uno solo que tuviera una sonrisa en la cara. Me volví hacia la hermana y le pregunté: ¿Por qué toda este gente que tiene tanto confort aquí, por qué miran todos hacia la puerta? ¿Por qué no sonríen?”Estoy acostumbrada a ver sonrisas en nuestra gente, aun los que están muriendo sonríen.Y la hermana me dijo: “Así es como están casi todos los días. Están esperando, están deseando que un hijo o una hija los venga a visitar. Están sufriendo porque han sido olvidados.” Ven, esta falta de amor lleva a la pobreza espiritual. Quizás en nuestra propia familia hay alguien que se siente solo, que se siente enfermo, que está preo-cupado. ¿Estamos allí? ¿Estamos allí con ellos, o simplemente dejamos que otro se ocupe de ellos? ¿Estamos dispuestos a dar hasta que nos duela para estar con nuestras familias, o anteponemos otros intereses? Son pregun-tas que debemos formularnos, especialmente al comenzar este año de la familia. Debemos recordar que el amor comienza en casa y también debemos recordar que “el futuro de la humanidad pasa por la familia.”

Me sorprende en Occidente ver a muchos niños y niñas jóvenes que se dan a las drogas. Y trato de preguntarme por qué. ¿Por qué es así, cuando todos en Occidente tienen muchas más cosas que los de Oriente? Y la respuesta es: “Porque no hay nadie en la familia que los reciba.” Nuestros hijos dependen de nosotros para todo, su salud, su nutrición, su seguridad, su progreso en el conocimiento y el amor a Dios. Para todo esto nos miran a nosotros con confianza, esperanza y expectación. Pero a veces el padre y la madre están tan ocupados que no tienen tiempo para los hijos o, quizás, ni siquiera están casados, o han abandonado su matrimonio. Luego los niños se vuelcan a la calle y se involucran en drogas u otras cosas. Hablamos del amor hacia el niño que es donde el amor y la paz deben comenzar. Estas son cosas que destruyen la paz.Pero siento que el mayor destructor de la paz hoy es el aborto, porque es una guerra contra el niño, el asesinato directo de un niño inocente. La misma madre toma su vida.Y si aceptamos que una madre mate a su propio hijo, ¿como podremos decirle a otra gente que no se maten entre ellos? ¿Como convencemos a una mujer para que no aborte? Como siempre, debemos convencerla a partir del amor, recordándonos a nosotros mismos que amar significa dar hasta que duela. Jesús dio su vida por nosotros. Luego la madre que está pensando en abortar debe ser ayudada a amar, esto es, a dar hasta que duela de sus planes, su tiempo libre; a respetar la vida de su hijo. El padre del hijo, quienquiera que sea, también debe dar hasta que duela.Con el aborto, la madre no aprende a amar, sino que mata a su propio hijo para resolver sus problemas.Y con el aborto, al padre se le dice que no tiene que hacerse responsable por el hijo que ha traído al mundo. Ese padre probablemente haga lo mismo con otras mujeres. Luego el aborto lleva a más abortos.Cualquier país que acepta el aborto no está enseñando a su gente a amar, sino a usar la violencia para obtener lo que quieren. Por eso el mayor destructor del amor y la paz es el aborto.Mucha gente está muy pero muy preocupada por los niños de la India, los niños de África porque algunos mueren de hambre, y otras cosas. Mucha gente también se preocupa por la violencia en esta gran nación, los Estados Uni-dos. Estas preocupaciones son muy buenas. Pero a menudo, esa misma gente no se preocupa por los millones que son asesinados por una decisión deliberada de sus propias madres. Y éste es el mayor destructor de la paz hoy, el aborto que ciega a tantas personas.Y por eso hago un llamado en la India y en todas partes. “Traigamos de vuelta al niño.” El niño es un don de Dios para la familia. Cada niño es creado a imagen especial y semejanza de Dios para cosas grandes, para amar y ser amado. En este año de la familia debemos traer al niño de nuevo al centro de nuestro cuidado y nuestra preocu-pación. Ese es el único camino en el que nuestro mundo sobrevivirá porque los niños son la única esperanza para nuestro futuro. A medida que los más viejos son llamados por Dios, solo los niños pueden tomar su lugar.¿Pero que nos dice Dios a nosotros? Nos dice: “Aún si una madre pudiera olvidar a su hijo, yo no te olvidaré. Te llevo grabado en la palma de la mano.” Estamos grabados en la palma de su mano; el niño por nacer ha sido grabado en la mano de Dios desde su concepción y ha sido llamado por Dios a amar y ser amado, no solamente ahora en esta vida, sino para siempre. Dios nunca puede olvidarnos.”
