6 Reading StrategiesReading Strategies – plans for solving problems encountered in constructing meaning
Why learn reading strategies?1)Improve reading comprehension as well as efficiency in reading2)Read in the way that expert readers do3)Process the text actively, to monitor comprehension, and to connect what they are reading to their own knowledge and to other parts of the text
![Page 4: Reading week3](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061123/547467ebb4af9fbe0a8b57d3/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
PREDICTCheck: -titles/pictures -headlines/subtitles, look for key words and guess what the text will be about-when the author asks a question -when the character in a story is about to do something
textbook e.g. – Statistics, state of nation…… what kind of statistics? what do you expect to read?

![Page 5: Reading week3](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061123/547467ebb4af9fbe0a8b57d3/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
CLARIFYReading Strategy # 2
- If you don’t understand something, reread, look for clues-Find the meaning of words by:1)Look for little words in big words2)Look for roots/bases/prefixes/suffixes3)Look for commas that follow unfamiliar words. Sometimes the author may use the word "or".4)Keep reading.
textbook e.g. – Aged 16 and over… does that include 16 year olds?
![Page 6: Reading week3](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061123/547467ebb4af9fbe0a8b57d3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

MAKE CONNECTIONS
-Connect the material to your prior knowledgeAsk:-What does this text remind me of?-What do I know about the topic?-Does this text make me think of another text/TV show/story/etc?-How does this compare/contrast/connect to what I already know?
