You are going to read an article about a young man with an unusual talent. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.
Danny MacAskill, a blond 24-year-old from Scotland, is in great demand.
Hollywood directors want him to be in their films and chat show hosts
are eager to interview him. Huge global brands like Red Bull and
Volkswagen pay him to appear in advertisements for their products.
But MacAskill isn’t a well-known actor or singer or even a successful
male model. Nor has he won an Olympic medal or written a prize-
winning novel. He isn’t even well educated, having left school at the
age of 17 with very few qualifications. 1
The answer becomes clear once you have watched a
video called Inspired Bicycles on YouTube. This video,
which became an unexpected sensation, shows
MacAskill performing a sequence of dangerous
stunts on his bike that really must be seen to be
believed. 2 Even if you aren’t a big fan of
cycling acrobatics, it’s hard not to be impressed.
Since the video was posted on the Internet, it has
been viewed by over 30 million people and has
turned MacAskill into a star.
Modest and down to earth, MacAskill says he never
expected the video to appeal to such a wide audience.
The only reason he made it, he explains, was to demonstrate his
abilities to other biking fanatics. 3 One minute he was working in
a bike shop in Edinburgh, riding part-time with a cycling stunt team
called The Clan, and the next he was being offered opportunities to
perform at the Scottish Cup Final and appear on American TV. He
admits that it’s weird, adding that “nothing is really an average day
anymore”.

4. Famous people often appear in adverts for well-known kinds / brands.
5. The acrobat did amazing tricks in mid-air / actively as well as on the ground.

1. Mr Brown is a really teacher. He makes us want to learn history.
2. My parents have taught me to be of other people’s opinions.
3. It’s important to make a good at a job interview.
4. Wendy had heard a lot about China so she went there on holiday with high .
5. New in technology are taking place all the time.
It’s all a far cry from what MacAskill describes as his “very ordinary”
upbringing on the remote Isle of Skye off the coast of Scotland. 4
His parents were, apparently, not too concerned by their son’s love of
taking risks. “In the garden we had big fishing nets hung from the trees
and I would throw myself into them from the top of the tree,” he
recalls.
Always on the lookout for new challenges, the young MacAskill soon
discovered the pleasures of BMX biking, but it was doing tricks
rather than cycling that appealed to the daredevil in him.
Before long, he was spending every spare moment on
his bike, jumping off walls, and practising jumps, spins
and other dangerous moves. 5 On one
occasion, he had his bike confiscated for the whole
summer after doing a wheelie in the middle of the
road.
After leaving school and moving to the mainland,
MacAskill continued to develop his own style of
cycling, a unique mix of BMX, street and mountain
biking. 6 “I didn’t have any specific goals as long
as I was doing something I enjoyed,” he explains. Now,
thanks to YouTube, he’s in demand to do everything, from
making movies to modelling clothes, but MacAskill’s priorities haven’t
changed. His first love is still biking, although he knows he won’t be
able to keep doing his stunts forever. In the meantime, he just wants to
have fun, and as long he’s on two wheels, he’s happy.

Read the text quickly, ignoring the gaps. Then read the sentences before and after each gap again. Go through the missing sentences and choose one that fits in the gap. After you have filled in all of the gaps, read the passage again to check your answers.
In the last paragraph, we learn that MacAskill “just wants
to have fun”. Do you think this is the right attitude or
should young people have other ambitions? Why?
There he spent his childhood climbing trees, jumping off roofs and generally running wild.
Unlike many of his friends, he never felt any pressure to get a “normal” job.
The local policeman was less tolerant of MacAskill’s stunts than his parents, however.
The camera follows him as he rides up trees and turnsupside down on the way down, drops backwards offwalls and spins in mid-air with confidence.
He planned to open his own bike shop one day.
So what is it about this man that has caught everyone’s attention?
Being famous was the last thing on his mind at the timeand it’s taken a while to get used to.

PLAN MODEL
Greeting Hi Mike,
Great to hear from you! I’ll be happy to help you with your school project.
First of all, as far as spectator sports are concerned, the ones my friends and I like best
are basketball and football. This is probably because these are the sports we also play
ourselves. As you know, I play for my school basketball team and I play football every
weekend with friends in my neighbourhood.
As for location, it depends on where the match is being played. If it’s taking place in a
stadium that we can reach easily by train or bus, and if the tickets are not too expensive,
then we travel to see it. If we can’t do this, we watch the match on TV – either at one of
our houses or in the local café. I really like watching matches at the café because they
have a huge screen and the atmosphere is always fun and lively.
I hope this information answers your questions. If you need to know anything else, just ask!
Yours,Gavin
