• AConcentration:Literature.ThisisaconcentrationinSpanish,LatinAmericanandLatina/oliteratureswithastrongemphasisonliteraryanalysis,criticaltheoryandculturalhistory.
• BConcentration:Pedagogy.Thisisaconcentrationinpedagogythataddsemphasisoncourseworkintechnologyintheclassroomandsecond-languageacquisition(sixtoninepedagogycreditsarerequired).
OneoftherequirementsforcompletionofaMasterofArtsdegreeinSpanishisacomprehensiveexamonthecourseworkandtheMAreadinglist.
StudentsintheLiteratureConcentrationwillberequiredtopassacomprehensiveexaminationcoveringcourseworkandreadinglistonfiveoutofeightareasofstudy,whichare:
• Medieval,GoldenAge,19thcentury,and20th/21stcenturyforSpain.• Colonial,19thcentury,20th/21stcenturyforLatinAmerica,andU.S.Latina/o.
Thefiveareaseachcandidatewillbeassessedmustinclude:twofromSpainandtwofromLatinAmerica(includingUSLatina/o),andatleasttwobeforethe20thcentury.
StudentsinthePedagogyConcentrationwillberequiredtopassacomprehensiveexaminationcoveringcourseworkandreadinglistonpedagogyandtechnologyaswellasonfouroutofeightareasofstudy,whichare:

Thecomprehensiveexamconsistsofawrittenpartandanoraldefense.AllpartsoftheexamareconductedinSpanish.Thewrittenexamconsistsoftwoparts:Thefirstpartincludesessayquestionsonhistoricalperiods,literarygenres,andculturalmovements.Studentsmustanswerthreeessayquestionsoutoffive,includingatleastonefromLatinAmericaandonefromSpain.Studentshavethreehourstocompletetheexam.Thesecondpartofthewrittenexamincludestwentyfive(25)identificationwordsorphrasesrelatedtotheworks,authors,andculturalmovementsfromLatinAmericaandSpainaswellaskeyliterarytermsandpedagogyconcepts.Studentshavethreehourstocompletetheexam.Oralexam
Thestudentswhosuccessfullypassthewrittenexamwillhaveanoralexamwithatleastthreefacultymembers.Intheoralexamstudentsmaybeaskedtoclarifyorexpandtheiressayquestionsoridentifications.Thestudentsmayalsobeaskedabouttheessayquestionsnotselectedinthewrittenpart.

Evaluationcriteria
Theexamisevaluatedasfollows:HighPass/Pass/Fail.Incaseoffailure,thecomprehensiveexamcanonlyberepeatedonce.Theexamwillbeevaluatedbyacommitteeofatleastthreefacultymembersselectedbythegraduateadvisor.
Theanswersofboththewrittenandoralcomponentsofthecomprehensiveexam
shouldreflectasuccessfulcompletionofcourseworkandthoroughfamiliaritywiththeworks,authors,andperiodsoftheMAreadinglistandageneralunderstandingoftheculturalhistoryoftheHispanicworld.Intheexam,thestudentsmustdemonstrateadvancedSpanishoralandwritingskills.
Theessaysshouldbewell-organized,coherent,andclearly-written.Essayquestions
shouldofferconcreteexamplesandreferencesfromtheliteraryworksinthelistandthetextscoveredinthecoursestaken.Intheidentificationpart,thestudentshouldprovidekeyinformationonthewordorphrase,demonstratingfamiliaritywiththerespectiveliterarywork,author,orperiodinquestion.Inoneortwoparagraphsthestudentsshouldprovideinformationonthecorrespondingcountry,period,author,movement.Theidentificationanswersshouldalsoprovidekeydetailsonthecontentoftheliteraryworksinquestion.Commonidentificationsaremaincharacters,titles,authors,movements,andliteraryconcepts.Intheoralexamthestudentshouldbeabletoproduceknowledgeableandarticulateresponsesontopicsandworksrelatedtohisorherselectedperiods.
ScheduleM.A.studentsnormallytaketheexamduringthelastsemesterofcoursework.Theexamisofferedonlytwiceayear,usuallythethirdweekofAprilandNovember.Studentsmustinformthegraduateadvisoratleastonemonthinadvancewhentheyintendtotakethecomprehensiveexams.Thewrittenpartistakenonthesameday,theessaysinthemorningandtheidentificationsintheafternoon.Theoralexamisscheduledapproximatelyoneweekafterthewrittenexam.
