Dozens of children were running around in the front yard of Bina Grahita Belaian Kasih SocialInstitution in Kalideres, West Jakarta, on a sunny afternoon. Faces coered in !owder, the kids

rushed inside when a "iddle#aged "an called the" for snack ti"e. $hey flockedin front of a

inaugurated & !elantikanToday, all the ocials came to the inauguration ceremony

'$hey (ust took a shower, that)s why their faces are coered with !owder, and afterward theyhae their snacks,* +idwan, an ad"inistrator and caretaker at the institution, told The Jakarta

    Post.

Bina Grahita was ina!ratedin -- and, so far, is the only social institution under the Jakarta

ad"inistration that !roides a !lace for ho"eless, disa%led children in the city.

/ocated in West Jakarta, the institution does not only !roide care for children in Jakarta, %ut

also for those found on the streets in the city)s outskirts, like De!ok and Bekasi in West Jaa.

0l"ost eery week, Bina Grahita welco"es new disa%led children fro" the streets.

$he institution currently cares for 1 children, "ost of who" hae Down syndro"e and were

    found liing on the streets.

    Down syndro"e, or triso"y 2, is a chro"oso"e irregularity caused %y a genetic "utation. It is

also the "ost fre3uent genetic cause of "ild to "oderate intellectual disa%ilities and associated

    "edical !ro%le"s.

'4ne caretaker has si5 or seen kids under his su!erision. Des!ite li"ited hu"an resources, we

always try to gie the" !ro!er treat"ent in this institution,* +idwan said.

6e said intellectually disa%led children need "ore care fro" those around the" %ecause "any of

the children, es!ecially those who were "ore seerely affected, could %arely take care of

the"seles. +idwan added that after working in the institution for less than a year, he had startedto loe the children and treated the" as one %ig fa"ily.

'We feed the", carry the" to the toilet and wi!e their %otto"s. 7ou couldn)t stand that eerydayunless you considered the" fa"ily,* he said, adding that there were 2 children in the institution

that needed wheel chairs and e5tensie treat"ents for their Down syndro"e.

$he head of the organization, 8ga!uli 9eranginangin, said he was grateful for his staff, who

worked ery hard for the children. ':y staff are e5traordinary, they work hard to !roide the

%est treat"ent for the children here,* he said.

6oweer, 8ga!uli said the institution was currently trying to figure out how to em"o#erthe

children to take control of their own futures and gain so"e inde!endence, since they could not

    stay at Bina Grahita foreer.

6e added that one o!tion was to teach the children si"!le tasks such as washing dishes or

    "otorcycles.

'I ho!e in the future there will %e a %usiness!erson who will hire the" to work for their

restaurant or car wash,* 8ga!uli went on.

Se!arately, disa%ility rights actiist 0ria Indrawati said the head of the social institution for

disa%led children should think outside of the %o5 to find (o%s for the children.

0ccording to her, instead of e5!ecting co"!anies to o!en their doors, Bina Grahita could hel!

the kids find work in s"all %usinesses, such as food endors.

    'For e5a"!le, I know a disa%led child who works for a "arta%ak ;stuffed !ancake< endor and

his only duty is to cut onions. $he social institution should stri$eto find a good !lace for the

children to %e inde!endent, %ut should not sto! giing the" a !lace to stay,* she said. # See "oreat= htt!=>>www.the(akarta!ost.co">news>2?@>?A>?->ho"eless#disa%led#children#find#ho"e#%ina#
