Five Berks County cancer survivors received beauty makeovers Friday as part of the Western Berks Relay for Life in West Lawn. Held at the John Gurski Stadium at Wilson High School, the event, which began at noon, raised $185,000 as of Friday evening, said event Chairwoman Denise Pasko. The final total won't be available until today's closing ceremony at noon. Sixty teams and 700 walkers participated in the Relay for Life, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment. The event was highlighted by the "Ambush Makeover," when Berks residents and cancer survivors Jayme Crimmins, Teri Marszalek, Jeannette Minnich, Joan Sheidy and Nancy Wolfskill were picked up at the stadium at 4 p.m. in a limousine and whisked away to have facials and get their hair done. They also received purses, bags and new outfits. "Whatever they wanted to have done," said Nancy Reppert, mission team member. In all, each woman received $500 in donated goods and services, said Reppert, who noted that the women were greeted with thunderous applause when they returned to the stadium. Search Site
