Course DescriptionStudents in enrolled in sixth grade Reading and
Comprehension will read a variety of short stories
to improve their reading and comprehension skills
and increase word knowledge.
Course ObjectivesAt the end of the course, students will:
1. Develop fluency, competency, and independence in reading.
2. Implement efficient study skills to increase learning from printed text.
3. Use a variety of effective, strategic methods when reading and writing.
4. Access, organize, and use information and insight from reading to make connections with personal life and meet personal , vocational, and academic needs.
Course Objectives Contd….5. Given a list of vocabulary words taken from a selected
story, students will write the definitions of each word with 100% accuracy.
6. Given a set of comprehension exercises, students will complete them with 100% accuracy.
7. Given a passage from a selected story, each student will read the passage with 90% accuracy.
8. Given a final exam of all the short stories, students will complete the exam with 80% accuracy.

Policies and Procedures
All exercises are due at the end of class on the due date. All students will be required to read a passage in the story. All extra credit work is to be turned in on the due date if the student decides to complete it for the week. Extra credit work is not assigned on the first week of class.
Note: *Students are only allowed to turn in one extra credit assignment for the course.
Attendance and Participation Students are expected to attend class on a daily
basis. However if a student misses a day, he or she is expected to complete the missed work on the make-up day. Students are only allowed to miss one day per week. If a student misses more than one day, he or she risks falling behind and the possibility of failing the course. Students will only be allowed to make up work missed more than a day due to extenuating circumstances. Reading the story aloud counts as participation.
Feedback Students will receive their graded work on
Friday of each week. Students will also have an opportunity to discuss any concerns about their feedback during this time.

School & District Rules
Students are expected to follow the rules and guidelines of the school and park district. Any student who violates the rules will be reprimanded according to guidelines. If a student is caught cheating, he or she will be suspended from the course and gets a failing grade for the course.

Under no circumstances are students allowed to play games or music cds on the computers unless given permission. If any student is allowed to use the computer to play games or listen to music, he or she must use headphones.
Students are not allowed to use the Internet during class time.
