Many old stories explain why Earth looks the way it does today. Here’s one such story, a myth, about how the Hawaiian Islands were formed. Pele, Goddess of Volcanoes Long ago there was a goddess named Pele who had such a bad temper that her father sent her away. She paddled her canoe out to sea and landed on the island of Kauai (KOW eye). Pele made her home in a volcano on the island. However, a huge wave came and filled the volcano. Some say that Pele’s sister, the goddess of the sea, did this. Pele moved south to other islands. Each time the sea ruined her volcano home and Pele moved again. Finally Pele reached the Big Island of Hawaii. There she found Kilauea (kee low AY uh), a volcano too high for the sea to fill. Some say Pele still resides there today. 1.
