Transcript of Read Tomorrow's Issue For: track as Kingstar toasts Steve ...€¦ · 15.09.2020 · Arson Annie,...
The sun had already set at the Gold
Coast and the action was winding
down after an epic day one of
selling when Arson Annie (Nothing
To Lose), a modestly performed maiden mare,
went through the Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale ring in late July.
The supplementary entry, offered by Julian
Blaxland’s Blue Sky Bloodstock Premium
Consignment, had been plucked from obscurity
after the emergence of her half-brother Rothfire
(Rothesay) who had emphatically won the J
J Atkins Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) to go with his five
other two-year-old victories last season in the
weeks preceding the breeding stock sale.
The opening session, after months of
uncertainty about the prospects of the Magic
Millions sale going ahead, Sunlight (Zoustar)
sold for $4.2 million, Unforgotten (Fastnet
Rock) made $2.75 million and Champagne
Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) fetched an even
$2 million.
Arson Annie, who has a Warwick maiden
placing to her credit from seven career
starts, would make just a fraction of those
extraordinary figures when she entered the ring
as Lot 152, 16 lots from the end of the afternoon
session. Continued on page 2>>

She would go on to make $42,500 after
going “on the market” at $35,000 with Kingstar Farm’s Matthew Sandblom
winning the bidding duel online.
After Rothfire’s demolition of his high-class rivals in Saturday’s
Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m), and firming into clear favourite for
the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) and justifying his selection as a leading
contender for The Everest (1200m), the purchase of Arson Annie
appears to be astute.
Kingstar Farm’s Adam Cook says there was more to Arson Annie’s
broodmare credentials than just the fact she was a half-sister to the
Robert Heathcote-trained three-year-old sprinter.
“You can probably tell the way we buy mares, we try to look for
something that might be a relation to something that is up-and-coming
and Rothfire was already a Group 1 winner by that time,” Cook said
yesterday.
“This mare, if you have a look at the photos, she looks quite similar to
Rothfire in the markings as well. She’s a dark brown, black looking mare
with a white stripe down her face and she’s very much in the same mould
as him.
“She’s by Nothing To Lose, who was a half-handy stallion up in
Queensland. She was a nice mare to buy and especially now that Rothfire’s
favourite for the Golden Rose.
“That was the cream of the crop on Saturday for the three-year-old
colts heading to the Golden Rose and Everest. Everything’s pointing to her
being a very astute buy.”
Arson Annie is expected to be covered by Kingstar’s first season sire
Unite And Conquer (Hinchinbrook) by the end of this week.
The dual stakes-winning two-year-old, whose racetrack career was cut
short by injury, stands for $6,600 (inc GST).

“Rothfire being a descendant of
Fastnet Rock and Unite And Conquer is also a descendant of Fastnet Rock
as well being by Hinchinbrook, so you’re going to get a close relation to
Rothfire in a sense,” he said.
“But it’s also a very good mating for us standing Unite And Conquer
in his first season and taking the resulting yearling filly or colt to a sale to
represent the stallion.”
Kingstar Farm principal Matthew Sandblom is sending 15 mares to
Unite And Conquer while also supporting his other stallions Bull Point
(Fastnet Rock) and Lord Of The Sky (Danerich).
Last month, Kingstar launched an incentive for mare owners
supporting Unite And Conquer at stud, with the breeders of his first
country, provincial, city and stakes winner receiving cash payments for
$20,000, $25,000, $35,000 and $50,000 respectively.
“The procedure that we go through as far as what mares we look at
is we essentially look at young mares and mares that haven’t had too
many foals or if they’ve had a couple, they’ve produced something handy
or have some upside going to deeper stallions with good pedigrees that
might be shining through to help our new stallions,” Cook said.
“We can’t be going and spending $400,000 on these mares and
supporting these stallions, we’ve got to be meticulous in what we
purchase, so when we come across ones that we like such as Arson Annie
and then Rothfire comes out and looks like an absolute superstar, it’s just
great for us and Unite And Conquer.”
The Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) stallion has 98 mares booked to
him so far and Cook expects that figure to increase as the breeding season
progresses.
“We should be able to raise the bat with him in the not too distant
future with a century of mares,” said Cook who welcomed his offsider
Conor Phelan to Kingstar Farm earlier this year.
“He’s well supported from outside breeders because, quite simply,
they come and have a look at him and if they don’t book on the spot,
they’re ringing up Conor or myself the next day to get a spot.”Unite And Conquer KINGSTAR FARM

Vancouver colt sets breeze-up benchmarkShaun Nolen’s JCS Thoroughbreds has
prepared the two fastest breeze-ups at the
Seymour session of the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale
in Victoria yesterday, with a son of Vancouver
(Medaglia d’Oro) running 10.16 seconds for the
200-metre hit out. Galloping on the synthetic
surface, Nolen’s Lot 176, the fourth foal out
of US mare Anatole (Quiet American) and an
$80,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier graduate,
ran four tenths of a second faster than his
stablemate, a colt by Unencumbered (Testa
Rossa). Catalogued as Lot 43, he ran 10.20
seconds while Sunhill Bloodstock prepared the
next two fastest breezers. They were a gelding
by Astern (Medaglia d’Oro), who ran 10.29
seconds, and a colt by Akeed Mofeed (Dubawi)
who ran 10.31 seconds. Baystone Farm’s Dean
Harvey also had two juveniles breeze-up
stylishly, with a Shamus Award (Snitzel) filly
setting 10.36 seconds and a colt by Hallowed
Crown (Street Sense) running 10.30 seconds.
Eagle Farm in Brisbane will host breeze-ups for
the October 20 Inglis sale today. Click here to

Victorian breeze-up times.
Buffalo River, Harlech on Rupert Clarke borderlineTrainer Mike Moroney is waiting nervously
to see if Buffalo River (Noble Mission) can
somehow gain a start in the Sir Rupert Clarke
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on Saturday, despite the
five-year-old being 23rd in the ballot order
for the feature. Only 16 runners can line up in
the Sir Rupert Clarke with four emergencies
also being declared and, while Moroney has
New Zealand Group 1 placegetter Harlech
(Darci Brahma) on the cusp in 18th, Buffalo
River looks to have a task to sneak into the
field. Buffalo River is yet to race against stakes
company but the English import is unbeaten
from five starts in Victoria. "He's hasn't beaten
much and he's been winning on tracks with a bit
of give in them. Also, I think he's a 1600-metre
to 2000-metre horse," Moroney said. "There's
going to be good speed if he gets in and he's
got such a high cruising speed. He should be
able to tuck in behind the likes of Begood Toya
Mother and Streets Of Avalon and then put the
pressure on them."
Tagaloa ready for Rupert testBlue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) will be aiming to join
the likes of Exceed And Excel (Danehill), Testa
Rossa (Perugino), Encosta De Lago (Fairy
King), Our Maizcay (Maizcay) and Manikato
(Manihi) as three-year-olds to have won the Sir
Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in the last 50
years when he lines up in the Caulfield feature
on Saturday. “He will get in with 54 kilograms
… it would have been nice if it was post-Covid
because then it would be 52 kilograms,” co-
trainer Natalie Young told Racing.com “But it’s
a nice weight and I know he loves Caulfield so
I think that’s the best way to go, targeting that
Group 1.” Tagaloa raced clear after a tough run
in the McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) before being
grabbed late, finishing third in a three-way
photo behind Immortal Love (Snitzel). “Really
happy with the way he is. He had a really nice
quiet week after the McNeil,” Young said.. “It
was a hard run, he did it tough. We gave him a
nice quiet week. He had a nice gallop Saturday
morning, Michael Walker came in and galloped
him and he’s rapt with how he pulled up.”
Rodd likely to ride SuperstormMichael Rodd is likely to get the leg-up on the
Grant and Alana Williams-trained Superstorm
(Sebring) in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m) with stablemate Showmanship
(Showcasing) also gaining a run in Saturday’s
feature. The Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
and All-Star Mile (1600m) runner-up finished
ninth in The Heath 1100 (Listed, 1100m) first-up,
but with stable rider William Pike set to partner
emerging talent Showmanship, Rodd looks set
to be Superstorm’s new rider. “Michael Rodd will
probably ride one of them, but we might not decide
until Wednesday when final jockeys are named,”
owner Bob Peters told Racenet. “Superstorm
will get a bit of weight and Showmanship will be
on the minimum. Superstorm hasn’t done a lot
wrong and the time we gave him to mature has
certainly helped.”
McDonald to link with StandoutExpressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Standout
(Exceed And Excel) will be ridden by James
McDonald for the first time in a race when the
Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained four-
year-old lines up in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m), an
important race on the path to The Everest (1200m),
on Saturday. Standout’s form tapered off in the
autumn, but he has trialled well in two hitouts
at his home track of Rosehill with Nash Rawiller
aboard. However, Rawiller will partner Eduardo
(Host), leaving the saddle open for McDonald.
"I've had a couple of calls about him for The
Everest from slot holders to see what we're doing
with him. They liked his trials," Ryan said. "He will
start in The Shorts and James McDonald will ride
him. He's going terrific. It's going to be some race
with Bivouac, Classique Legend, the horse of Joe
Pride's who won his only two up here, Eduardo,
Splintex and there's probably a few I've forgotten."

Arc dream for Russian Camelot’s owner
The 2021 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m)
may be on the radar for the Danny O’Brien-trained
Russian Camelot (Camelot) after a Melbourne
spring campaign that is likely to include the Cox
Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,
3200m). Speaking on RSN927 yesterday morning,
Russian Camelot’s part-owner John Wheeler said
that the lure of 53.5 kilograms for the Melbourne
Cup was likely to prove too enticing to pass up,
although he admitted that could change if a
breeding operation were to make a bid for the
horse. “(The Arc) is my personal ambition and I’ve
mentioned it in discussions with Danny but not
with the other partners,” Wheeler said. “Without
being presumptuous on their part, we think if the
horse does perform this spring, he certainly will
be racing in Australia in the autumn and we can
look at races like the Ascot Gold Cup and then
the Arc. Remember we would have gone for the
Derby (at Epsom), but I think we are glad that we
missed it.”
Anders Williams’ Moir mountCraig Williams will ride A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1,
1000m) favourite Anders (Not A Single Doubt)
when he runs in the Moonee Valley sprint feature
on September 25. The Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace-trained three-year-old colt has produced
two scintillating performances in the Rosebud
(Listed, 1100m) and San Domenico Stakes (Gr
3, 1100m) at Rosehill this preparation. It will be
the first time Anders, a winner of four of his eight
starts, races in Melbourne.
Dragon Leap suffers injuryKiwi four-year-old Dragon Leap (Pierro) has
suffered a setback that will curtail his Sydney
spring campaign. The Lance O’Sullivan and
Andrew Scott-trained gelding had looked in for
a good preparation, having found the line well
for eighth in the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m),
beaten just two lengths, and was on target for
the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). “It’s a
minor injury and certainly nothing of any note
that is going to have any long-term effect on his
racing career,” O’Sullivan said. “It is a case of six
weeks rest and he will be as good as gold.” While
a decision is still to be made as to whether the
horse heads to Hong Kong to continue his
career, O’Sullivan said the multiple Group 2
winner could become a permanent member
of his team. “We were probably more likely for
him to have gone to Hong Kong if this hadn’t
occurred,” O’Sullivan said. “He’s only had six
career starts, so all it’s all ahead of him. The less
racing they do as young horses the longer they
race for.”

Change of tactics for RascalA chat between trainers Archie Alexander and
William Haggas will result in a change of tactics
for Young Rascal (Intello) when the N E Manion
Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner next steps out in
The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) next month.
Young Rascal, now prepared by Alexander
but previously trained by Haggas, was ridden
forward by John Allen at Flemington on
Saturday but overraced badly under top weight,
fading to finish eighth, almost ten lengths from
Lord Belvedere (Archipenko). “William Haggas
has always been positively involved in the horse,
he agreed with what I was thinking and that I’ve
got to go with my gut feeling,” Alexander told
Racing.com. “So I think we will be changing our
tactics, very much so in the Bart Cummings, and
just ride him very quiet, tuck him in midfield
somewhere, getting him to settle. He pulled
very, very hard, John was instructed to push
forward, so he’s pushed forward and ended up
having no cover, overraced the whole way and
I think with 62 kilograms, 2500 metres, he just
hasn’t finished off at all. In the Bart Cummings
he gets 60 kilograms, we’ll ride him a bit more
quietly and then I think we will see him bounce
back to form.”
QRIC appeals Currie decisionThe Queensland Racing Integrity Commission
(QRIC) yesterday announced that it
was appealing a Queensland Civil and
Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) ruling which
set aside a ban handed down to trainer Ben
Currie. The former Toowoomba handler was
initially disqualified for four years on two
charges of bringing racing into disrepute, but
that was reduced to 30 months after an internal
review conducted by QRIC. Currie appealed to
QCAT, who accepted his argument that he did
not breach the rules of racing, with QRIC now
set to continue the legal battle.
Australian Horse of the Year finalists announcedNature Strip (Nicconi) remains the leading
contender to be named Australian Racehorse
of the Year for the 2019-20 season after the
finalists for each category were announced
yesterday. Nature Strip shapes as the hot
favourite to win Champion Sprinter of the Year,
although he faces competition from Group 1
winners Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), Loving
Gaby (I Am Invincible) and Gytrash (Lope De
Vega) as well as The Everest (1200m) winner
Yes Yes Yes (Rubick). The winners of each of the
seven categories are then eligible to be named
overall Racehorse of the Year. The ceremony
will be held in Queensland on October 5 and
will be broadcast live on Sky Thoroughbred
Central and Racing.com. Click here for the full
list of finalists.
Addeybb to tackle Sydney trainees for NSW Horse of the Year
Newmarket’s Addeybb (Pivotal) will be up
against NSW-trained Group 1 winners Nature
Strip (Nicconi), Verry Elleegant (Zed) and
Fierce Impact (Deep Impact) in the race to be
named NSW Champion Horse of the Year for
the 2019-20 season. The title, which has gone
to champion mare Winx (Street Cry) the last
four years, headlines the ten categories that
form Racing’s Night of Champions, the annual
awards night hosted by the New South Wales
Racehorse Owners’ Association (NSWROA).
Addeybb won the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
in the autumn and is also nominated for the
NSW Middle Distance Horse of the Year.
Zahra hurt in freak accidentA run-in with an ottoman has put jockey Mark
Zahra in hospital, but he is hoping to be back
in the saddle for the Underwood Stakes (Gr
1, 1800m) at Caulfield Saturday week. “The
missus bought an ottoman for the bedroom
to put at the end of the bed. She just bought
it on the weekend,” Zahra told Racing.com. “I
got up about 4am to go to the toilet, tripped
over it because I forgot it was there, and gone
head first into a set of draws. How’s your luck?
I had plastic surgery on my eyelid. Pretty much
nearly severed it off, so I had to get fixed up. I’ve
got about five or six stitches near my brow in the
middle of my forehead. So I did a proper job.
I’ve got one of the most dangerous jobs in the
world and I end up in hospital after falling over
an ottoman.” Zahra is hoping to be released
from hospital today.
Eaton to stay in SAVictorian jockey Jessica Eaton will see out her
apprenticeship in South Australia after formally
signing over her indentures to Murray Bridge
trainer Michael Hickmott. Eaton, who was
under trainer Chris Meagher at Mornington,
had been on a three-month loan to Hickmott
but she has elected to continue the association.
“I will be officially transferred to Michael and
will remain with him until I come out of my
time in March next year,” Eaton told Racing.
com. “My boss Chris (Meagher) back home
in Victoria said it was a no brainer with the
success I am enjoying and once again I can’t
thank him enough for his support. It’s been a
bit of a whirlwind run since my first meeting
here back in July and I couldn’t have imagined
a better start with 19 winners in that time.”

Johnson to keep Avantage rideWith Opie Bosson unable to make the 56.5
kilograms weight to ride the Jamie Richards-
trained Avantage (Fastnet Rock) in Saturday’s
Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hastings,
Danielle Johnson will be the beneficiary. Johnson
partnered the mare into an impressive first-up
win in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) earlier
this month and has forged a good relationship
with Avantage, victorious on four of the five
occasions she has ridden the Te Akau star. “I
obviously won on her last start and it was a terrific
win and she looks like she has come out of the
run really well and is in fine order heading into

Group 1 goals for GermanicusDanica Guy could not be happier with her
talented galloper Germanicus (Rip Van Winkle) as
the five-year-old begins a Group 1 programme of
assignments this season at Hastings on Saturday.
The Matamata trainer has Germanicus set to
resume in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) in
which he will be ridden by Chad Ormsby, his rider
in each of his two lead-up trials. “Chad suits him,”
Guy said. “He came over on Saturday to gallop
him and he was rapt with him. He is as well as I
can get him going into his first-up run. He finds
his work and his trials very easy and the next level
of fitness for him is having a race. He’ll improve a
shade with the run at Hawke’s Bay, but he’ll give
them a shake. He just needs a reasonable track.
He’s flying.” Guy has Germanicus nominated for
all three legs of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown,
but will not make a decision on the final leg, the
Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) on October 17,
until after he contests the second leg, the Windsor
Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) a fortnight earlier. “At this
stage I’m just concentrating on the first two legs,”
she said. “Even though he’s nominated for the
Livamol, I’m pretty keen to just wait a bit before
trying him over 2000 metres, but it will all depend
on how he is going.”
Tiptronic pleases RichardsonGroup 1 winner Tiptronic (O’Reilly) was one of
the eye-catching runners at Ellerslie on Saturday,
with the seven-year-old lumping 60 kilograms
into a close-up fourth in the Auckland Co-Op
Taxis (1600m) won by Codecracker (Nadeem)
and looks set to make an impact deeper into the
campaign. The Graham Richardson and Rogan
Norvall-trained galloper was second-up after
resuming with a sixth placing at Taupo. “I was
very happy with the run on Saturday because he
carried six kilos more than anything else, with
the exception of Fiscal Fantasy. It was a very
good effort,” Richardson said. “He ate up well,
has done everything right and was stretching out
well this morning. He’ll go to Te Rapa on October
2 for a mile or a 2100-metre race and then we’ll
go down to the Livamol after that. Then we’ll
give him a freshen up and get him ready for the
Auckland carnival then Te Rapa for the Herbie
Dyke again.”

Melbourne Cup penalty for Tiger MothTiger Moth (Galileo) is guaranteed a spot in the
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) should trainer
Aidan O’Brien decide to send the colt after
Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter
penalised the three-year-old 2.5 kilograms for
his four-length win in the Paddy Power Stakes
(Gr 3, 1m 4f) at Leopardstown on Saturday.
Tiger Moth, who was still a maiden in June, will
aim to become the most lightly-raced winner
of the Melbourne Cup since Martini-Henry
(Musket) won the race at just his second start in
1883, should he venture to Australia. The Irish
Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) runner-up will carry 52.5
kilograms in the Melbourne Cup and is now
12th in the ballot order.
Aspetar confirmed for Cox PlateA Roger Charlton staff member landed in
Sydney last night to begin two weeks of
quarantine, locking in Aspetar (Al Kazeem)
as a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) runner. The
Covid-19 pandemic has created its own issues
with movement of staff more of an issue than
movement of horses this year, and while
Charlton’s staff member looked set to be stuck
in the UK, the trainer confirmed he will take
part, with the horse set to begin quarantine
tomorrow. “We were struggling to get a flight
for his lad to get there two weeks in advance
to do his quarantine, but he flew out yesterday
and Aspetar goes to Newmarket on Wednesday
morning to start his quarantine,” said Charlton
to the Racing Post. "I just wasn't happy with
him [before the Juddmonte International], but
he's fine now. He's very well and fresh and the
Cox Plate has been the plan for some time," said
Charlton. There are a few more hurdles before
we get him to the race, but at the moment we're
heading in that direction.”
Port Guillaume heading to Caulfield CupA disappointing effort in the Grand Prix de Paris
(Gr 1, 2400m) on Sunday has opened the door for
Port Guillaume (Le Havre) to travel to Melbourne
this spring. Port Guillaume was backed into
favourite for the Grand Prix de Paris on the back
of his win in the Prix Hocquart (Gr 2, 2500m), but
he weakened into last of the ten runners, more
than 15 lengths from Mogul (Galileo). That effort
ruled out the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1,
2400m) but put the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)
on his radar, with owner Edmond Lee set to ship

the horse to Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes in
Australia before eventually sending the horse to
their former training partner David Hayes in Hong
Kong. "We've had confirmation from Edmond
Lee on Monday that he will be coming out,"
Dabernig told Racing.com. "I haven't heard the
feedback from the trainer (Jean-Claude Rouget)
or jockey (Cristian Demuro) but just watching the
race from afar, there was a very strong pace and
he looked to chase the speed and brought himself
undone in doing so and probably set it up for
the winner. I loved all his lead-up runs and then
obviously from a trainers' point of view there's
that little bit of a worry how they're going to come
out of a tough run like that. But in saying that, if he
travels well and everything goes smoothly, I think
his profile for a Caulfield Cup is still very good.”
Williams selects carnival competitorsLeading owner Lloyd Williams has announced
his team of European runners set to raid on
the carnival riches this spring. Last year’s
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) runners Master
Of Reality (Frankel) and Twilight Payment
(Teofilo) will be joined by newcomers
Buckhurst (Australia) and Pondus (Sea The
Moon). Twilight Payment, 12th in last year’s
Melbourne Cup, continued his preparations
with a third-place finish in the Irish St Leger
(Gr 1, 1m 6f) on Sunday while Buckhurst, who
holds an entry for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)
in addition to the Cups, was fifth in the Paddy
Power Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 4f) on Saturday. The
Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) has been identified
as the upcoming target for Pondus, who needs
to win his way into the field for the Melbourne
Cup.
Son of Irish Lights makes US$230,000Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Irish
Lights (Fastnet Rock) was represented on day one of
the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Kentucky
on Sunday with her Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) colt,
Lot 219, selling for US$230,000 (approx A$316,000).
Consigned by Eaton Sales, he was purchased by
De Meric Sales, who are noted pinhookers based
in Florida, and is likely to be sold as a ready-to-run
two-year-old. The yearling’s year-older brother
Lipizzaner sold for US$650,000 (approx A$893,500)
at the sale last year; he finished fourth in the Norfolk
Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) before breaking his maiden at
Navan last week for Aidan O’Brien.
Summer Pudding named South African Horse of the YearUnbeaten South African filly Summer Pudding
(Silvano) was named South Africa’s Horse of
the Year for the 2019-20 season at the country’s
Equus Awards on Sunday. The Paul Peter-trained
Summer Pudding, who races in the Mauritzfontein
yellow and black, won the South African Fillies
Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) and the Woolavington 2000
(Gr 1, 2000m), as well as the South African Oaks
(Gr 2, 2450m), the Gauteng Fillies Guineas (Gr 2,
1600m) and the Fillies Mile (Gr 3, 1600m), among
seven victories from as many starts.

In most other years, the numbers
generated by the opening session of the
Keeneland September sale, the world’s
largest yearling marketplace, would
have been cause for general alarm, if not the
beginning stages of panic.
For starters, more than 51 per cent of the
224 horses cataloged for Sunday’s session
were withdrawn or listed as RNAs (reserve not
attained).
The 109 yearlings reported sold, which
included at least one that was apparently a
buyback, yielded a gross of US$40.68 million,
down 19.8 per cent from the same session in
2019 when post-sale transactions are included
and down 12 per cent without considering
those additional sales. Average price declined
13.6 per cent to US$373,211.
Yet despite these daunting figures,
Keeneland officials were celebrating what
president-elect Shannon Arvin described
as a “good day overall” considering the long
shadows of the coronavirus pandemic.
Although neither Arvin nor director of
sales operations Geoffrey Russell answered
directly when asked how the results compared
with their pre-sale forecasting, both expressed
gratitude that the sale could even be held in
light of Kentucky restrictions on public events
aimed at curbing the coronavirus.
“It was great to have people on the
grounds, it was great to have trade, it was great
to see people following [Covid-19] protocols
so we can continue to have trade,” said Arvin,
referring to required social distancing and the
wearing of face masks.
“Just to have a sale met our expectations,”
Russell declared. “The resiliency of this
industry is unbelievable. For what everyone
has been through, we appreciate all the buyers
who are here and we wish them all success.”
Many adaptations were required due to
the virus, with Keeneland offering internet
and telephone bidding and reporting that five
horses were sold online, with four of those to
international buyers.
Even more than has been the case in recent
years, buyers and sellers reported extreme
selectivity, with horses who have perceived
flaws being harshly downgraded - thus
sometimes spurring consignors to withdraw
them - and those that are the most desirable
drawing broad interest.
Five horses - four fillies and a colt - drew
bids of at least US$1 million, compared with
seven at that level during the opening session
in 2019, including a pair bought by Godolphin
for more than $2 million each. Neither
Godolphin nor Shadwell bought any yearlings
on Sunday, contrasted with their combined
spending of US$8.31m for eight colts and fillies
in the initial session last year.
Yet even without the Maktoums, four
of the opening session’s elite yearlings
featured an international angle to the buyer
or seller, underscoring the significance of the
Keeneland auction globally. Approximately
20 per cent of the 448 yearlings catalogued for
the two Book 1 sessions were bred, owned or
otherwise closely connected to international
entities.
Leading the way in the opening session
was a US$1.25m bay filly by Tapit out of Grade
1 winner Embellish The Lace (Super Saver),
who was acquired on a bid by Claiborne
Farm’s bloodstock manager Bernie Sams for an
undisclosed farm client aiming to build a future
broodmare band.
China Horse Club, which paid US$2.4m
for Embellisht The Lace at Fasig-Tipton in
2016, bred the Tapit filly. She was consigned by
Bluewater Sales as Lot 149.
“Anytime you get that amount of money,
you have to be very happy. It’s a lot of dough and
we’re in a lucky position to breed such a nice
filly and offer her here,” said Michael Wallace,
China Horse Club’s chief operating officer, who
also plans to buy some yearlings.
Despite the overall market pitfalls, Wallace
observed that “selling horses like [the Tapit filly]
isn’t too much of a challenge. She far exceeded
what we were asking for her. The challenge is for the
horses that aren’t quite hitting all the marks - that’s
where this market is a little bit tough. It’s expected,
it’s the way of the world. We’re not immune.

Tough opening to Keeneland September Yearling Sale

“It’s just a matter of keeping some
confidence in the market and confidence in
your product and in the industry long-term,
which I do have,” he continued. “So, you can’t
look at it too much in a micro view. We take a
very macro view on the whole thing and this
will pass and normality will resume.”
For some buyers, the turbulent market offered
opportunities, even if their hopes were quashed
for simultaneously trying to sell yearlings.
Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm
withdrew three Tapit yearlings produced
by some of her expensive mares, including
champions Havre De Grace (Saint Liam) and
Groupie Doll (Bowman’s Band), from Sunday’s
session. She also withdrew the first foal, by
Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), of her US$9.5m
champion Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) who
had been catalogued for Monday’s second sale
session.
Nonetheless, Pope prevailed in prolonged
bidding to secure a Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado)
filly who is a half-sister to outstanding young
sire Constitution (Tapit) for US$1.1m. The filly
was bred in partnership by Bridlewood Farm
and Don Alberto Corp. and consigned by
Denali Stud as Lot 58.
Pope’s adviser Todd Quast said the filly is
“absolutely” a collector’s item considering the
way Constitution’s stud career is going.
“We’re not looking for a collector’s item,
though,” he said. “We’re looking for a racehorse
first, and she obviously has great broodmare
potential, so she checks all of the boxes for
us. She was very athletic with a super, super
shoulder, like the Medaglias have, and enough
hip that we were just very happy to have her,
first as a runner and then as a broodmare.”
The session’s third highest-priced yearling
was a full-sister to European juvenile champion
and young Coolmore sire Air Force Blue (War
Front), sold by breeder and consignor Stone
Farm for US$1.05m as Lot 98. Agent Mike Ryan,
who signed the ticket on behalf of an undisclosed
buyer, said the dark bay War Front (Danzig) filly
would likely be sent to Europe for racing.
“Being a full-sister to champion Air Force
Blue you’d have to think she’d love the turf, but
she looked to me like something that could run
in the States on the dirt,” said Ryan. “She’s going
to start off in Europe and hopefully we can do
some good over there and bring her back over
here later in her career.
“I knew [the price] was going to be seven
figures or thereabouts. She’s got a lot of residual
value. I thought she was an exceptional physical
when I saw her at Stone Farm about three weeks
ago and she’s improved since then.”
Ryan ended the session as second leading
buyer with seven purchases for various clients
for a total of US$3.23m. His acquisitions
included an US$800,000 Curlin (Smart Strike)
colt, Lot 181, who is the full-brother of 2017
champion juvenile Good Magic, and Ryan
said the yearling will go to Bob Edwards’ e5
Thoroughbred Racing, which campaigned
Good Magic with breeder Stonestreet Farm.
“They are very alike - this horse is just a little
bigger and a little stronger and deeper,” Ryan said
of the yearling compared to Good Magic, who he
purchased for US$1m at this venue in 2016. “They
have the same demeanor. Good Magic had a great
personality, he was a very focused horse, very
professional, and this guy is the same way. If he is
half as good, we’ll be delighted.”
Rounding out the session’s quintet of seven-
figure yearlings was a US$1m Quality Road
(Elusive Quality) filly, Lot 67, acquired by agent
Donato Lanni for Charles Chu, a businessman
active in China as well as America, and a
US$1m Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) colt,
Lot 121, from the family of Oaks d’Italia (Gr 1,
2200m) winner Menhoubah (Dixieland Band)
purchased by Larry Best of OXO Equine.
Best also bought a US$525,000 Into
Mischief filly, Lot 208, who is a half-sister to
2019 American champion sprinter Mitole
(Eskendereya). He noted that he continues to
expand his interests in breeding, having just
retired to stud his Grade 2 winner Instagrand,
a US$1.2m auction purchase by Into Mischief
who will stand at Taylor Made Farm.
“I’m a big fan of Into Mischief,” said Best. “I
think he is probably one of the best sires ever.”
Overall, Into Mischief was among the
top sires for the session, with nine yearlings
sold for US$4.835m and an average price
of US$537,222. Curlin led all sires with 13
offspring sold for a total of US$5.245m and an
average of US$403,462, while Medaglia D’Oro
led by average price of US$567,778 for nine sold
for gross of US$5.11m.
Lanni, who works closely with trainer Bob
Baffert and who helped select Kentucky Derby
winner Authentic (Into Mischief) at this auction
in 2018, ranked as leading buyer. He purchased
eight yearling colts for the partnership of
Starlight Racing, SF Bloodstock and Madaket
Stables for US$4.17m in addition to the Quality
Road filly for Chu.
Yearlings secured by Lanni for the
partnership include three sons of Quality Road
and one each by Into Mischief, Curlin, Uncle
Mo, Medaglia D’Oro and Candy Ride.
Last week, the same partners and Lanni
took home eight colts from the Fasig-Tipton
Selected Yearling Showcase for a total of
US$3.29m, with that group topped by a pair of
sons of Into Mischief.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the ledger,
yearlings withdrawn or RNA’d from the session
included several bred by Coolmore partnerships,
such as Lot 114, a colt by War Front out of Group
3 winner Coolmore (Galileo), a full-sister to
Gleneagles, who was scratched.
Lot 130, a Kitten’s Joy (El Prado) filly bred
by the Niarchos family’s Flaxman Holdings out
of Irish and American stakes-placed Absolute
Crackers (Giant’s Causeway), was reported sold
for US$130,000. However, the buyer was listed
as Flaxman Stables Ireland, so the filly was
apparently a buyback.

Seeker by Rainbow Quest) got off the mark
in a novice contest over five furlongs on
Chelmsford’s all-weather track on Sunday.
Trained by Adrian Keatley, the juvenile beat Eye
Of Heaven (Exceed And Excel) by a length and
three-quarters, with favourite Asadjumeirah

New G1 winnersAustralia - Coolmore’s Australia (Galileo)
sired his first elite level winner when Galileo
Chrome (3 c ex Curious Mind by Dansili)
continued his meteoric rise through the ranks
with victory in the St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f)
at Doncaster on Saturday. The Joseph O’Brien-
trained colt, who only broke his maiden tag
in the middle of June, made it four wins from
as many starts this year when seeing off the
persistent challenge of Berkshire Rocco (Sir
Percy) to score by a neck under Tom Marquand.
Pyledriver (Harbour Watch) finished a length
further back in third. A runaway winner of a
Listed contest on testing ground at Navan at
the back-end of last month, Galileo Chrome
is the second foal out of the winning Dansili
(Danehill) mare Curious Mind, who herself is
a half-sister to Listed winners Michelangelo
(Galileo) and Private Secretary (Kingman) and
out of a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Aussie
Rules (Danehill). Dual Derby winner Australia

Galileo - Coolmore sensation Galileo (Sadler’s
Wells) took his Group 1 tally to 88 on Sunday with
victories to Mogul (3 c ex Shastye by Danehill) in
the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) and Shale (2 f
ex Homecoming Queen by Holy Roman Emperor)
in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f). Mogul swept
home at Longchamp to take the Grand Prix de Paris
impressively, defeating In Swoop (Adlerflug) by
two and a half lengths with Gold Trip (Outstrip) a
short head away in third. The brother to Japan and
Sir Isaac Newton may be bound for Australia, with
the colt holding entries in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1,
2400m) and the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). Minutes
later, Shale took the juvenile fillies’ feature at the
Curragh, scoring by three-quarters of a length over
Pretty Gorgeous (Lawman) with the Australian-
owned Oodnadatta (Australia), sporting the Bob
Scarborough colours, in third. Galileo stood for a
private fee in 2020.
Maclean’s Music - Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms
stallion Maclean’s Music (Distorted Humor)
recorded his third Grade 1 winner last week when
Jackie’s Warrior (2 c ex Unicorn Girl by A P Five
Hundred) took out the Hopeful Stakes (Gr 1, 7f)
at Saratoga on Monday to remain unbeaten. The
Steve Asmussen-prepared Jackie’s Warrior won
on debut at Churchill Downs before taking the
Saratoga Special (Gr 2, 6f) at start two. Ridden
by Joel Rosario, Jackie's Warrior led from gate to
wire, taking victory by two and a quarter lengths
over favourite Reinvestment Risk (Upstart);
Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief) was more than ten
lengths away in third. Maclean’s Music stood for
US$20,000 (approx A$27,600) in 2020.
Shamardal - The late Shamardal (Giant’s
Causeway) sired his 26th individual winner at the
elite level when Tarnawa (4 f ex Tarana by Cape
Cross) emerged from deep in the pack to strike in
the Prix Vermeille (Gr 1, 2400m) at Longchamp
on Sunday. The Dermot Weld-trained four-year-
old was taking her record for the season to two
from two as she lowered the colours of red-hot
favourite Raabihah (Sea The Stars), crossing the
line three lengths in front of the market leader
who kept on well to edge out Dame Maillot
(Champs Elysees) for second. Now the winner of
six of her 12 starts, five of those victories coming
in stakes races, Tarnawa is the first foal out of the
Cape Cross (Green Desert) mare Tarana.
Violence - It was a coast-to-coast double for
Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms stallions in the juvenile Grade
1 features on Labor Day in the US as Dr. Schivel
(2 c ex Lil Nugget by Mining For Money) gave
Violence (Medaglia d’Oro) his fourth Grade 1
winner when taking the Del Mar Futurity (Gr 1,
7f) at Del Mar. Sent out as favourite and ridden
by the meet’s leading rider Flavien Prat, Dr.
Schivel chased the leader Spielberg (Union Rags)
throughout, assuming control at the top of the
stretch to win by a length and three quarters over
Spielberg with three and three-quarter lengths
back to Weston (Hit It A Bomb) in third. Violence
stood for US$25,000 (approx A$34,500) in 2020.
Zoffany - Thunder Moon (2 c ex Small
Sacrifice by Sadler’s Wells) made the seamless
transition from maiden success to Group 1
winner when flying late to claim the Vincent
O’Brien National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at the Curragh
on Sunday. Supplemented for the race after being
acquired by new ownership, the Joseph O’Brien-
trained colt defeated Wembley (Galileo) by one
and a half lengths with St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni)
a close third as father Aiden O’Brien rounded out
the placings. Yulong’s joint favourite and Phoenix
Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Lucky Vega (Lope De
Vega) met a wall of horses in the straight and
could only finish fifth. Thunder Moon is the third
Group 1 winner for his sire Zoffany (Dansili). Out
of the unraced Small Sacrifice (Sadler’s Wells),
Thunder Moon is a half-brother to Listed winner
Table Rock - Anticipation (HK) (Fastnet Rock).
Zoffany stood for €22,500 (Approx. AU$36,500) at
Coolmore in 2020.
New stakes winnersAnjaal - Rathasker Stud resident Anjaal
(Bahamian Bounty) sired his first stakes winner
when Aztec Parade (3 g ex Generous Gesture
by Fasliyev) landed the Tetrarch Stakes (Listed,
7f) at Cork on Wednesday evening. The Johnny
Murtagh-trained three-year-old was winning
for the second time in five starts when he
beat Free Solo (Showcasing) by a length and a
quarter, who got the better of Agitare (Teofilo)
by a nose. Aztec Parade is a half-brother to the
Group 3-placed Gallant Eagle (Hawk Wing) and
The King Geremia (Estidhkaar), who has been
Listed-placed in Italy this season. They are out
of dual winner Generous Gesture (Fasliyev),
a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Harvest
Queen (Spinning World), dam of the Group
1-placed Barley Mow (Zamindar). Anjaal stood
for a fee of €5,000 (approx A$8150) in 2020.
Areion - Gestut Etzean resident Areion
(Big Shuffle) sired his 47th individual stakes
winner courtesy of a victory by Schwesterherz (3
f ex Nouvelle Noblesse by Singspiel) in Sunday’s
Stadt Baden-Baden Cup (Listed, 1400m). The
Henk Grewe-trained three-year-old filly posted
her second victory in nine starts when beating
Song Of Life (Poet’s Voice) and Marly (Siyouni).
Schwesterherz is a half-sister to Group 3 winner
Noble Moon (Sea The Moon). Areion stood for a
fee of €12,500 (approx A$20,300) in 2020.
Bahamian Bounty - The late Bahamian
Bounty (Cadeaux Genereux) sired his 35th
individual stakes winner when Tarboosh (7 g ex
Mullein by Oasis Dream) overcame a tardy start
to take out the Scarborough Stakes (Listed, 5f)
at Doncaster on Wednesday. The Paul Midgely-
trained seven-year-old was winning for the 12th
time in 44 starts when he beat Urban Beat (Red
Jazz) by a length and a quarter, with favourite
Dakota Gold (Equiano) another neck away in
third. Dual Group 1 winner Bahamian Bounty
died at the National Stud in Newmarket earlier
this year at the age of 26.

Bradbury’s Luck - Yarradale Stud stallion
Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice) made it ten
individual stakes winners when Skate To Paris
(6 m ex Paris Blu by Murphy’s Blu Boy) finally
broke through for a first black-type victory
in the Brisbane Handicap (Listed, 1630m) at
Doomben. The Chris Munce-trained Skate To
Paris has been four-times stakes-placed before
- twice at two, once at three and once at four
- but it has taken until early in her six-year-
old season before she has gained that elusive
win. Sent out as the $8.50 fourth favourite,
Skate To Paris was ridden conservatively by
Larry Cassidy from the outside gate of 11.
However, when she was asked to quicken, she
was much too good, scooting away to score
by three lengths over Free Fly Too (Teofilo)
with Toryjoy (Street Cry) a further half-length
away in third. Purchased for $10,000 from the
2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale,
Skate To Paris has now earned $526,775 from 35
starts. Bradbury’s Luck transferred to Western
Australia’s Yarradale Stud from Glenlogan Stud
in Queensland in 2016; he stands for $3,300 (inc
GST) in 2020.
Candy Ride - Rideforthecause (4 f
Danceforthecause by Giant’s Causeway) was a
shock 22-1 winner of the Canadian Stakes (Gr
2, 9f) at Woodbine on Saturday and became
the 92nd individual stakes winner for her sire
Candy Ride (Ride The Rails). The Gail Cox-
trained four-year-old was having her first
outing in Graded Stakes company and hacked
up by four and a half lengths from the favourite
Cambier Parc (Medaglia d’Oro) while Court
Return (Court Vision) rallied from last for third.
Rideforthecause is the second foal and second
stakes winner for Danceforthecause (Giant’s
Causeway) who is also the dam of Grade
2-placed Say The Word (More Than Ready)
while the third dam is the Champion Dance
Smartly (Danzig). Candy Ride stands at Lane’s
End Farm where his 2020 fee was $100,000
(approx A$137,300).
City Zip - Umberto Rispoli’s career-long
wait to sport the Godolphin silks paid off
handsomely at Del Mar last week when Pixelate
(3 c ex Speckled by Street Cry) took out the Del
Mar Derby (Gr 2, 9f), giving the late City Zip
(Carson City) his 87th individual stakes winner.
The Michael Stidham-trained Pixelate, who was
yet to win from his first five starts as a three-
year-old, was still sent out as favourite with
Rispoli the leading rider at the Del Mar meet so
far. Racing handy, he was brought through with
a late surge to grab Margot's Boy (Clubhouse
Ride) by a head, with longshot Dominant Soul
(Dominus) a length and a quarter away in third
after leading. City Zip was euthanized at Lane’s
End Farm in 2017.
Coulsty - Suicide Squad (2 f ex Strike A
Light by Dutch Art) landed her fourth win on
the bounce and her first stakes success in the
Premio Repubbliche Marinare (Listed, 1500m)
at Rome on Sunday and became the second
stakes winner from the first crop of Coulsty
(Kodiac). Scoring by a length and a quarter,
she got the better of Niram (Night Of Thunder)
while there was a further three-quarters of
a length back to Alma Hera (Dragon Pulse)
in third. Coulsty stands at Rathasker Stud in
Ireland where his fee in 2020 was €4,000 (approx
A$6,500) and he is also responsible for Princess
Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) winner Santosha.
Dubawi - Dubawi (Dubai Millennium)
sired his 188th individual stakes winner when
the hugely promising Indigo Girl (2 f ex Montare
by Montjeu) took her unbeaten record two
with victory in the May Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1m)
at Doncaster on Thursday. Despite showing
signs of inexperience, the John Gosden-trained
filly quickened nicely late on under a hands
a heel ride from Frankie Dettori to win by a
going away three-quarters of a length. Dubai
Fountain (Teofilo) finished in second position,
with favourite Zabeel Queen (Frankel) another
length away in third. The ninth foal out of
the Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Montare,
herself the winner of the Prix Royal Oak (Gr 1,
3100m), Indigo Girl is a sister to Group 1 winner
Journey. Dubawi stood at Darley’s Dalham Hall
Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £250,000 (approx
A$443,200) in 2020.
Elzaam - The Australian-bred Elzaam
(Redoute’s Choice) sired his first Group 1 winner
on Saturday when Champers Elysees (3 ex La
Cuvee by Mark Of Esteem) claimed the Matron
Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Leopardstown, producing
an impressive turn of foot to overpower Irish
1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Peaceful
(Galileo). French Oaks (Gr 1, 2100m) winner
Fancy Blue (Deep Impact) finished third. The
race, which forms part of the Breeders’ Cup
Challenge series, was a first success at the elite
level for the filly and a fourth win in succession.
Elzaam, bred to northern hemisphere time by
Kia Ora Stud, was a winner to Listed level and
runner-up in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f)
as a two-year-old after his €280,000 yearling
purchase by Shadwell. Elzaam stands for €4,000
(approx A$6,500) at Ballyhane Stud and is also
the sire of Group 3 winner Waitingfortheday
and this year's QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) fourth
Playa del Puente.
Epaulette - Darley’s Epaulette (Commands)
sired his 15th individual stakes winner and his
first in France when Amica Nostra (3 f ex Qenaa
by Royal Applause) took out the La Coupe de
Marseille (Listed, 2000m) on Friday. Having

Fastnet Rock - Coming on from her fourth-
placed debut nine days earlier, the Aidan O’Brien-
trained Monday (2 f ex Ballydoyle by Galileo)
scored stakes success on her second start in the
Ingabelle Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Leopardstown to
become the 159th individual stakes winner for
her sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill). The blueblood
is out of Group 1 winner Ballydoyle (Galileo)
but was sent off at 12-1 with stablemate More
Beautiful (War Front), a half-sister to Saxon
Warrior (Deep Impact), the favourite. Monday
bounced well from the stalls under Seamie
Heffernan and made all before asserting in the
final furlong to beat No Speak Alexander (Shalaa)
by three quarters of a length, while A Taad Moody
(Awtaad) was a further length and a half third.
The favourite returned fifth of the eleven runners.
Multiple Champion Sire Fastnet Rock will stand
at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains this year for $165,000.
Foxwedge - Woodside Park resident
Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) sired his 20th individual
stakes winner when Foxtrot Lady (5 m ex Strictly
Dancing by Danehill Dancer) finished well up
the stands’ side rail under Frankie Dettori to
land the Sceptre Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Doncaster
on Wednesday. The Andrew Balding-trained
five-year-old was winning for the fifth time in 28
starts when she defeated favourite Althiqa (Dark
Angel) by a length and a quarter, with the winner’s
stablemate Bounce The Blues (Excelebration)
running on well to be just another head away in
third. Foxtrot Lady is the third foal out of Strictly
Dancing (Danehill Dancer), who herself is a half-
sister to the dam of the French Group 2 winner
Norse King (Norse Dancer). Foxwedge stands at
Woodside Park Stud in Victoria for a fee of $11,000
(inc GST) in 2020.
Frankel - Juddmonte’s Frankel (Galileo)
sired his 58th individual stakes winner when
British raider Queen Daenerys (3 f ex Song
To Remember by Storm Cat) took out the Prix
Joubert (Listed, 2800m) at Longchamp on
Thursday. The Roger Varian-trained three-
year-old, who has been highly tried recently,
was winning for the second time in seven starts
when she beat Vadalda (Nathaniel) by a length
and a quarter, with OTI Racing’s Auyantepui
(Night Of Thunder) another four and a half
lengths adrift in third. US $500,000 purchase at
Keeneland in 2018, the Coolmore-bred Queen
Daenerys is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner
Magnificent Song (Unbridled’s Song). Frankel
stood at Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket
for a fee of £175,000 (approx A$308,600) in 2020.
Galileo - Tiger Moth (Galileo), one of
Aidan O’Brien’s many runners in action over
the weekend to hold an entry for both the big
cups at the Spring Carnival, ran out an easy
winner of the Paddy Power Stakes (Gr 3, 1m
4f) at Leopardstown. Having just his fourth
start, the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) second
provided Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) with his 327th
individual stakes winner - a figure that was at
329 by weekend’s end - when beating Silence
Please (Gleneagles) and Up Helly Aa (Galileo).
The Joseph O’Brien-trained pair of Buckhurst
(Australia) and Patrick Sarsfield (Australia),
who also have carnival entries, both finished
unplaced. Galileo stood for a private fee at
Coolmore in 2020.
Kingman - Juddmonte’s Kingman
(Invincible Spirit) sired his 24th individual
stakes winner when Queen Of Love (3 f ex
Extricate by Exceed And Excel) took her
unbeaten record to two with victory in Friday’s
Prix Coronation (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud.
The Andre Fabre-trained filly was following up
May’s Deauville debut success when beating
favourite Speak Of The Devil (Wootton Bassett)
by a length and three-quarters. Bionic Woman
(Lope De Vega) was the same distance away
in third. A €650,000 breeze-up purchase at
Arqana in May of last year, Queen Of Love is a
half-sister to the German Listed winner Dark
Liberty (Dark Angel). Kingman stood for a fee
of £150,000 (approx A$263,500) in 2020.
Lope De Vega - Ballylinch Stud’s Lope de
Vega (Shamardal) sired his 74th stakes winner
and a 28th juvenile stakes winner as Cadillac (2
c ex Seas Of Wells by Dansili) won by a going-
away three and a half lengths in the Champions
Juvenile Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Leopardstown on
Saturday. Cadillac, runner-up in the Futurity
Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) on his last start, defeated
Van Gogh (American Pharoah), with Reve
De Vol (Siyouni) in third. A €40,000 purchase
from the Goffs Orby Sale in 2019, Cadillac is
closely related to two-year-old Group 1 winner
Damson (Entrepreneur). Lope de Vega stood
for €100,000 (approx A$162,500) in 2020.
New Bay - Ballylinch Stud resident New Bay
(Dubawi) sired his first stakes winner when New
Mandate (2 g ex Mishhar by Authorized) fought
bravely in the closing stages of Friday’s Flying
Scotsman Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Doncaster to
just deny Laneqash (Cable Bay). The Ralph
Beckett-trained juvenile squeezed through
a gap on the far rail under Frankie Dettori to
edge it by a head, while the Godolphin runner
One Ruler (Dubawi) kept on to finish two and
a half lengths back in third having not had the
clearest of passages. A €35,000 purchase at
Arqana last year, New Mandate is the third foal
out of Mishhar (Authorized), who herself is a
half-sister to Puggy (Mark Of Esteem), the dam
of dual French Classic winner Avenir Certain
(Le Havre). French Derby (Gr 1, 2100m) winner
New Bay stood for a fee of €15,000 in 2020.
Outwork - Wesley Ward juvenile Outadore
(2 c ex Adore You by Tactical Cat) remained
unbeaten at Kentucky Downs on Saturday and
became the second individual stakes winner
for his sire Outwork (Uncle Mo) when beating
stablemate Fauci (Malibu Moon) in the Juvenile
Turf Sprint Stakes (Listed, 6.5f). The winner of a
maiden special weight (5.5f) at Saratoga at the
end of July, Outadore was sent off as favourite
and duly obliged by a length and three-
quarters, while there was a further three and
a quarter lengths back to Cowan (Kantharos)
in third. Ward will keep the pair apart on their
next start, sending one to the Pilgrim Stakes (Gr
2, 8.5f) at Belmont Park and the other to the
Bourbon Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Keeneland at the
start of October before aiming for the Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 8f). Outwork stands at
WinStar Farm where his 2020 fee was $15,000
(approx A$20,600).

Samum - Runner-up in the Prix der Diana
(Gr 1, 2200m) at her previous start, Zamrud (3 f
ex Zambuka by Zieten) kicked clear of the field
in the T von Zastrow Stutenpreis (Gr 2, 2400m)
to claim a first stakes win at Baden Baden on
Saturday. The Sarah Steinburg-trained filly
gave her sire, the late Samum (Monsun), a
14th individual stakes winner when defeating
Prix der Diana third-place getter Virginia Joy
(Soldier Hollow), with British raider Rose
Of Kildare (Make Believe) in third. Zamrud,
a homebred for Gestut Hachtsee, is out of
Zambuka (Zieten) a half-sister to Japanese
Group 1 winner Fabulous La Fouine (Fabulous
Dancer).
Savabeel - Aquis Farm continued their
excellent record from this season’s three-year-
old crop with yet another impressive victory
for the unbeaten Mo’unga (3 c ex Chandelier
by O’Reilly), who raced away with the Dulcify
Quality (Listed, 1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
In doing so he provided his sire Savabeel
(Zabeel) with a 101st individual stakes winner.
The Chris Waller-trained Mo’unga, who backed
up a debut win at the Gold Coast with victory
at Newcastle last time out, defeated stablemate
and fellow Aquis three-year-old Global Quest
(More Than Ready) by one and a half lengths,
with the Coolmore-owned Jet Propulsion
(Rubick), a half-brother to Pierata (Pierro),
in third. A NZ$325,000 purchase by Aquis
Farm out of the Waikato draft at Karaka’s 2019
National Yearling Sale, Mo’unga is out of the
stakes-placed Chandelier (O’Reilly), a sister to
Group 2 winner Irlanda. Savabeel heads the
Waikato Stud roster for a fee of NZ$100,000 plus
GST.
Sea The Moon - Lanwades Stud resident
Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) sired his eleventh
individual stakes winner when Alignak (4 c ex
Albanova by Alzao) made the most of the drop
in both grade and distance to land the Stand
Cup Stakes (Listed, 1m 4 1/2f) at Chester on
Saturday. Third in a Group 3 contest at Newbury
on his most recent start, the Sir Michael Stoute-
trained four-year-old registered his third win in
eight starts when seeing off the challenge of the
running on Morando (Kendargent) by a length.
Hereby (Pivotal) was a further four and a half
lengths adrift in third. Alignak, who is closely
related to the Listed winner All At Sea (Sea The
Stars), is a half-brother to five winners out of
the multiple Group 1 winning mare Albanova
(Alzao). Sea The Moon stood for a fee of £15,000
(approx A$26,500) in 2020.
Smart Missile - Crosshaven (3 g ex Irish
Colleen by Shinko King) is building quite
the impressive record as he scored a first
stakes victory, and a third win from four
starts, by landing the Exford Plate (Listed,
1400m) at Flemington on Saturday, providing
his sire Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) with a
19th individual stakes winner. Crosshaven
defeated Bartley (Written Tycoon) by one and
a half lengths, with Cherry Tortoni (Night Of
Thunder) a further three-quarters of a length
back in third. Crosshaven is out of Group 2
winner Irish Colleen (Shinko King) and is a
half-brother to New Zealand Group 3 scorer
Killarney (O’Reilly). Smart Missile stands at
Twin Hills Stud for $22,000 in 2020.
Soldier Hollow - Nine two-year-olds went
to post in the Preis Zukunftsrennen (Gr 3,
1400m) at Baden-Baden on Saturday with Reine
D'amour (2 c ex Reine Heureuse, by Big Shuffle)
coming out on top to remain unbeaten on his
second start, becoming the 46th individual
stakes winner for his sire Soldier Hollow (In
The Wings). Tracking the pace into the turn, he
hit the front in the straight and saw off the late
burst of Juanito (Zoffany) to win by a nose, while
Shila (Lord Of England) was three-quarters of a
length back in third. Soldier Hollow stands at
Gestut Auenquelle in Germany where his 2020
fee was €30,000 (approx A$48,800).
Siyouni - Haras de Bonneval resident
Siyouni (Pivotal) sired his 37th individual stakes
winner when Policy Of Truth (2 c ex Dawn To
Dance by Selkirk) made it two wins from three
starts in Thursday’s Prix des Chenes (Gr 3,
1600m) at Longchamp. Trained in partnership
by Pia Brandt and her husband Joakim, Policy
Of Truth was following up his win at Deauville
last time out when running out a three-length
winner over Mouillage (Toronado). My Kurkum
(Dariyan) was another two and a half lengths
away in third. Policy Of Truth is the third foal
out of the Selkirk (Sharpen Up) mare Dawn To
Dance, who herself is a half-sister to Group 1
winner Namid (Indian Ridge). Siyouni stood for
a fee of €100,000 (approx A$162,800) in 2020.
Tavistock - Eight-year-old Travimyfriend
(8 g ex Pineau by Carnegie) scaled new heights
as he claimed a first stakes success on what
was his 50th career start for trainer Rachael
Frost when taking The Sofitel (Listed, 1400m)
at Flemington. Travimyfriend, a Group 1
placegetter in his former life in New Zealand,
defeated favourite Windstorm (Redoute’s
Choice) by three-quarters of a length with
Morvada (Mossman) in third to deliver a 21st
individual stakes winner for his sire Tavistock
(Montjeu). Tavistock died at Cambridge Stud
last year.
