Oracle COM Automation Developers GuideRelease 2 (8.1.6) for Windows NT (Bug 1411720) Contains an error regarding support for multi-threaded

external callouts. The following bullet point on p age 1-7 should have been

removed because multi-threaded external callouts are desupported.

    s Architectural Model 2

EXTPROC op erates as an N T process that is capable of spawn ing

mu ltiple thread s. When m ultiple sessions are connected to an Oracle

database, only one EXTPROC p rocess is spawned by Oracle instead of

spaw ning separate EXTPROC processes to hand le each d atabase

session. This one EXTPROC process in turn sp awns one thread per

    da tabase session.

Registration of Oracle Objects for OLE Data Control in Windows 95 On someWindow s 95 system s, the Data Con trol for Oracle Objects for OLE is not

registered p roperly w ith the operating system . This occurs on systems

where an older version of the MFC Runtime Module (MFC42.DLL) is

installed. While this mod ule is up grad ed by Oracle Universal Installer, if

the mod ule is in use, it is not upgraded un til after rebooting.

If an older v ersion of the MFC Run time Module than the one required by

Oracle Objects for OLE (required version is 6.00.8447.0) is insta lled, reg ister

the Oracle Objects for OLE Data Control with the operating system after

    s Oracle Workflow Mailer Installation

    Known Problems, Restrictions, and Workarounds

s (Bug 1484791) Insta lling Oracle Enterpr ise Manager release 2.2 (and any

of its comp onents) in an existing Oracle Enterprise Manager release

2.1.x Oracle home is not supp orted. You mu st install Oracle Enterprise

Manager release 2.2 in a new Oracle home.s (Bug 1379284) Oracle Universa l Insta ller release 8.1.7 for Wind ows

provid es user interface and help contents for 24 langu ages plus English,

but some Finnish help contents app ear in English.

s (Bug 1221872) Due to a p roblem in Java Runtime Environment (JRE),

Oracle Universal Installer and other Java-based tools currently do not

run if your op erating system locale is Hind i, Tamil, Marathi, Sanskrit,

Konkani, Armenian , or Georgian on Window s 2000.

If your operating system locale is one of those listed above on your

Wind ows 2000 comp uter, temporar ily change it to English by following

the step s described below before installing Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7).

You can chan ge your operating system locale back to the original value

after you finish installing Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7) or finish using

    Oracles Java-based tools.

In order to change th e operat ing system locale on Window s 2000,perform these steps:

    1. Start > Settings > Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Regional Options.

    3. Chan ge Input Locales to English (...)

    4. Choose OK.

Note that th is problem also exists on Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7) for

Wind ows N T, but these locales are not sup ported on this operating

system, so the problem d oes not occur.

    s When m oun ting a CD-ROM on a Novell dr ive to a Wind ows N T client

and run ning Oracle Universal Installer, you may get the following

    error:

The Java Runtime Environment was not found at hence the

Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.

As the Novell server d oes not support long filenam es, the d irectory

path for JRE_LOCATION is not recognized (some of the d irectory

nam es have m ore than eight characters). Therefore, this configuration is

not sup ported . Try moun ting the CD-ROM locally or on a Window s NT

    Server.

s On slower computers you may notice a "flicker" at the Oracle Universal

Installer loading screen. It does not affect the installation in any way.

s On systems with a combination of Window s NT 4.0 SP5 and an ATI

display driver, a mem ory du mp occurs when the Oracle Universal

Installer window is moved around the screen. Selecting a smaller

display for the screen m ay red uce the frequency of this occurrence. This

problem is a display driver conflict and n o Window s NT patch was

    foun d at this time.

s The Help window invoked from Oracle Universal Installers Inventorywindow cannot be scrolled or resized the second time it is accessed. A

workaround is to close the Inventory window. The H elp wind ow is

now accessible. Resize the H elp w indow, then close it. The n ext time

you invoke Help from the Inventory w indow, it app ears at that size.

This is a bug du e to Java D evelopm ent (JDK) 1.1.8.

s When installing Oracle8i on dual boot systems, the software uses the

same p hysical space on both operating systems. Therefore, any tasksdone on Window s 95 are also done on Wind ows N T, including

    deinstallation.

You can avoid this by p erforming the following steps:

    1. Install Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7) into the first environm ent.

    2. Before installing in the second environment, prov ide a different

location than th e default wh en Oracle Universal Installer promp ts

you wh ere to create the O racle Universal Installer inventory. The

second environmen t inventory is independent of the first, and

prod ucts can be installed or d einstalled separa tely on both systems.

    s Do n ot install release 8.1.5 after installing release 8.1.6 or 8.1.7. If you d o

so, release 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 is fu lly deinstalled and considered not

functional because the requ ired Java Run time Environm ent (JRE)

1.1.7.30 is removed . Note that the sam e issue also app lies to all

non-Oracle home prod ucts that are shared betw een these installations. This problem d oes not occur if you install release 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 after

    release 8.1.5.

s If you have the Beta version of Oracle Provider for OLE DB installed on

your compu ter, deinstall that p rodu ct before reinstalling the new

    version of the release.

    Deinstallation

You cannot d einstall Oracle JServer separately from other p rodu cts installed

    with Or acle8i Release 3 (8.1.7).

Deinstalling Oracle JServer causes Oracle Universal Installer to remove

Oracle8i and oth er products depen den t on Oracle JServer from you r

    system.

Oracle Intelligent AgentWith release 8.1.7, users can select ind ividu al Oracle Intelligent Agent

extensions such as Oracle Application Extensions, Oracle HTTP Server

Extensions, Oracle eBusiness Management Extensions, Oracle Forms

Extensions, Microsoft SQL Server Extensions for insta llation, separately

from the basic Oracle Intelligent Agent. Installing an extension will also

install the basic Oracle Intelligent Agent since, the extensions dep end on th e

    Oracle Intelligent Agent.

Oracle Intelligent Agent and Data Ga therer services are au tomat ically

started after installation p rovided existing Oracle Intelligent Agent an d

Data Ga therer services are not ru nning. Therefore, Oracle Intelligent Agent

discovers existing services such as databases and listeners up on startu p.

Any service like a d atabase or listener tha t is installed after Oracle

Intelligent Agent is discovered by stopping an d restarting th e Oracle

    Intelligent Agent service.

    Redistributable System Files

Oracle8i installation m ay attem pt to install several redistributable system

files that are requ ired for Oracle software to function correctly. These files

are shared by other ap plications and m ost likely are in use on the comp uter.

If the version of a g iven system file is less than th e version required by

Oracle, Oracle Universal Installer attempts to up grad e it. Errors may occur

du ring upgrade if the system file Oracle Universal Installer is trying toup grade already exists on the compu ter and h as been d esignated as

    read-only.

In this case, Oracle Universal Installer indicates that it encountered

difficulties in copying th e app ropriate file to the system. If such an error

occurs, check to see if the system file in question is writable or if a similar

file of the nam e SYSTEMFILE.OLD exists on the compu ter.

If the system file that Oracle Universal Installer is trying to replace isread -only, chan ge its attribu te so that the file is wr itable, and click "Retry" in

the Oracle Universal Installer wind ow to u pgrade the system file.

Using Oracle Home Selector on Windows 95 or Windows 98

In some instances, the O racle Home Selector fails to switch the entries in th e

PATH environment va riable as desired. This occurs in cases wh ere the

PATH is defined in m ultip le p laces in the file AUTOEXEC.BAT. For

example, if the following lines exist in AUTOEXEC.BAT:PATH C:\windows

    PATH D:\oracle\ora817;D:\oracle\ora816;%PATH%

then an attemp t to switch the order of D:\ ORACLE\ ORA817 with

D:\ ORACLE\ ORA816 in the PATH u sing Oracle Hom e Selector fails.

To work around this limita tion, modify AUTOEXEC.BAT so that the PATH

is defined in one location in the file. Using the above example, if you

    modify AUTOEXEC.BAT to read :

    PATH D:\oracle\ora817;D:\oracle\ora816;C:\windows

then att emp t to use Oracle Home Selector to sw itch, the order of Oracle

Hom es in the PATH su cceeds.

    Oracle8iManagement and Integration Custom Installation

It is not p ossible to install and configure Oracle Internet Directory (OiD)

and Oracle Workflow in the sam e installation session d uring a custom

installation of Oracle8i Managem ent and Integration. If you perform such

an installation an d choose to install both OiD an d Oracle Workflow, the OiD

Configuration Assistant is launched du ring post-installation to configure

OiD in the d atabase, and O racle Workflow is not autom atically configured.

To conf igure Oracle Workflow manually after the installation sess ion is

    complete.

    1. Exit Oracle Universal Installer at the end of installation.

    2. Run the O racle Workflow configuration script. To d o th is, change

directories to ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\ WF\ INSTALL, and

    enter the following command :

    D:\ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\wf\install> inst252.bat wf_acctwf_pwd

    wf_homesys_pwdsystem_pwdINSTALL

    where:

Note: Oracle Workflow is only configured autom atically wh enyou install it and also create a new database du ring the same

installation session. If you in stall Oracle Workflow and a d atabase

already exists in the Oracle hom e, Oracle Workflow mu st be

man ua lly configured after installation.

    Web-based Installations

It is possible to install Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7) using HTTP. To d o th is:

    1. Configure your Web server so that it can serv e files from the 8.1.7

    release med ia.

    2. In the File Locations dialog of Oracle Universal Installer enter the URL

exposed by the Web server that points to the file PRODUCTS.JAR. For

    example:

    http://acme.us.oracle.com/817/stage/products.jar

When p erforming such a Web-based installation on a compu ter in wh ich no

Oracle produ cts have p reviously been installed, you may experience two

errors du ring installation. These errors occur wh en installing the Oracle

Adm inistration Assistant for Window s NT and Oracle Intelligent Agent.

Both errors occur wh en Oracle Universal Installer attempts to dow nload a

library from the indicated URL. The error messages are as follows:

    s First error:

    Error Occurred

    s Second error:

There was an error during loading library : NtServicesQueries.

To w ork around these two errors, do the follow ing:

    1. In both cases, wh en the errors occur, you are given an op tion to stop theinstallation of all compon ents or to stop the installation of that

par ticular comp onent. Choose to stop the installation of only that

    particular component and continue.

    2. After installation is complete, restart Oracle Universal Installer.

    3. Using the sam e URL as was used in the original installation, perform an

The installation of these two comp onents now proceeds norm ally.

    Oracle Workflow Mailer Installation

When installing Oracle Workflow Mailer, the file WFMLR.EXE is incorrectly

installed into the d irectory ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME. Copy this file

into the d irectory ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\ BIN before using the

s Enabling and Disabling System Triggers

s Heterogeneous Services Agent Control Utility

s Ignore Error ORA-00604: During Upgrade

    s Upgrading from 8.1.5 to 8.1.6 to 8.1.7

s Partial Upgrad es of Server-side Comp onents

    Required Support Files Drop-In Compatibility

In Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7), Oracle is sup porting d rop-in compatibility of

the 8.1.7 client-side libraries on top of the 8.1.6 client-side libraries. This

means that app lications and tools runn ing in the same Oracle hom e as these

8.1.6 client-side libraries d o not encoun ter ru ntime errors if the libraries are

up grad ed to 8.1.7 du ring installation. How ever, drop-in compatibility is not

supported for client-side libraries being used by a d atabase or listener. If an

attemp t to upgrade the 8.1.6 client-side libraries is made in the sam e Oracle

home as an Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) database or listener, and the d atabase

or listener is not also up graded to 8.1.7, the 8.1.6 versions of the d atabase orlistener w ill break. If you want to keep the older versions of the d atabase or

listener intact, you mu st install Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7) in a new Oracle

ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1

    Upgrading from 8.1.5 to 8.1.6 to 8.1.7

If you p erformed an u pgrade of your Oracle8i release 8.1.5 software to

Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) in the sam e Oracle home and now want to

up grad e the 8.1.6 softwa re to Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7), you will experiencean installation runtim e error that occurs d ur ing the deinstallation of the

8.1.6 software that you can ignore. Oracle Universal Installer trea ts a

softw are up grad e as a deinstallation of the old software followed by an

installation of the new softw are. While deinsta lling the release 8.1.6

software, an attem pt to un register th e release 8.1.6 DLL OraOLEDB.DLL

fails. An error m essage is displayed ind icating:

A dynamic link library initialization routine failed.

This error occurs because during the u pgrade from release 8.1.5 to release

8.1.6, the file OCI.DLL in ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\ BIN w as not

    Partial Upgrades of Server-side Components

In certain situations, an attem pt to upgrade some bu t not all Oracle8i

    release 8.1.5 or Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) software to Oracle8i Release 3

(8.1.7) may resu lt in the d einstallation of all of the older softw are, even

though you did not choose to up grade that software du ring the current

session. Pay careful attention to the Oracle Universal Installer Summ ary

wind ow to make sure that this does not happ en. For examp le, if you have

performed a release 8.1.6 Oracle8i Enterprise Edition (Oracle8i StandardEdition or O racle8i Personal Edition) Typical installation, and you want to

up grad e only Oracle Intelligent Agent to release 8.1.7, then all of the 8.1.6

    compon ents will be deinstalled.

If you w ant to retain the basic functionality that w as present in the Oracle

home with the older software, choose to upgrad e all components that are

installed in th e Oracle hom e.

It is possible to perform a p artial up grad e of some of the software in a

particular Oracle home without running into the problems described here.

To do this, you m ust select a different top -level comp onent in the new

installation session than w as originally chosen wh en installing the older

software. For examp le, using th e same scenario as above, if you performed

a release 8.1.6 Oracle8i Enterprise Edition (Oracle8i Stand ard Edition or

Oracle8i Personal Edition) Typical installation, and you w ant to u pgrade

only some of the components to release 8.1.7, you should select one of the

installation typ es for Oracle8i Client and u pgrad e the software as usu al.

Performing the up grad e in this way will not result in the deinstallation of

all your older software, and only those comp onents you have selected for

    installation will be upgraded.

Note: This installation runtim e error does not occur w hen

up grad ing directly from Oracle8i release 8.1.5 or Oracle8i Release 2

    (8.1.6) to Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7).

Note: Oracle Corporation d iscourages such partial server-side

up grad es, especially if an older Oracle8i da tabase or listener is

installed in the sam e Oracle home. See "Required Support FilesDrop-In Comp atibility" for more information.

s (Bug 1377891) Oracle Corporation norm ally recomm ends that you only

have a single Net8 listener service runn ing on a Window s NT comp uter

at any on e time. This single listener can support m ultiple databases of

the same version as the listener and earlier. If you n eed to have two

different Net8 listener services runn ing on a Window s NT compu ter at

the same time, make sure that they are configured to listen on d ifferent

    TCP/ IP port num bers.

If the sam e IP add ress and p ort are used for different Net8 listeners,

then instead of the second an d the consecutive listeners failing to bind

as expected, it allows them to go ah ead an d listen on this IP add ress

and port. This results in u nexpected behav ior of the Net8 listeners. This

is a suspected Wind ows N T operating system problem with TCP/ IPand has been reported to Microsoft.

    s (Bug 1379263) For release 8.1.7, after creating a nam e server u sing N et8

Assistant, loading of the TNSNAMES.ORA file fails, and returns the

    following error:

For all other users (local users, Wind ows N T 4.0 dom ain u sers,Wind ows 2000 dom ain users, Window s 95 users, and Wind ows 98

    DNS.

s Add the DNS domain nam e of your Windows 2000 domain and yourdomain contro llers IP add ress to you r H OSTS or LMHOSTS file.

    http://support.intel.com/support/performancetools/pse36/

for fur ther PSE36 system requirem ents and for dow nloadinstructions.

    3. On Window s 2000, the user accoun t un der wh ich Oracle8i runs

(typically the local SYSTEM account), has the "Lock mem ory p ages"

    Windows 2000 pr ivilege.

    4. USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS=TRUE must be present in the

INIT.ORA file for the d atabase instance that u ses the VLM support. If

this para meter is not set, then Oracle8i behaves in exactly the same w ayas p revious releases.

    5. Set the INIT.ORA p ara meters DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS and DB_BLOCK_

SIZE as desired for the d atabase. Note that the total nu mber of bytes of

database buffers (that is, DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS multip lied by DB_

BLOCK_SIZE) is no longer limited to 3 GB, as was the case in p revious

    releases.

    6. The VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY (for Wind ow s N T 4.0) or AWE_

WINDOW_MEMORY (for Windows 2000) registry parameter must be

created and set in the app ropriate key for your Oracle home in the

Wind ows N T registry. This parameter is specified in bytes and has a

default of 1 GB. When u sing Wind ows NT 4.0, this param eter tells

Oracle8i how mu ch non-PSE36 memory to use for da tabase buffers.

When using Window s 2000, this param eter tells Oracle8i how mu ch of

its 3 GB address space to reserve for mapp ing in d atabase bu ffers. For

both imp lementations, this mem ory comes from Oracle8is 3 GB virtual

address space, so its value mu st be less than 3 GB. Setting this

parameter to a large value has the effect of using m ore of Oracle8is

add ress space for buffers and using less PSE36 or AWE memory for

add ress space for buffers and using less PSE36 or AWE memory for

buffers. However, since accessing PSE36 or AWE buffers is somewhat

slower than accessing virtu al add ress space buffers, tun e this param eter

to be as large as possible w ithout ad versely limiting d atabase

    operations.

For examp le, assum e that the Oracle8i database is runn ing on an

Wind ows N T 4.0 compu ter with 8 GB of RAM, which m eans tha t the

PSE36 driver h as con trol of 4 GB of RAM. If DB_BLOCK_

BUFFERS=2500000 and DB_BLOCK_SIZE=2048, then a total of 5 GB of

database buffers needs to be allocated . If VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY is

set to 1 GB, then 1 GB of buffers come from the Oracle8i virtual address

space and 4 GB come from the PSE36 dr iver. If you set VLM_BUFFER_

MEMORY to 500 MB, an error occur s at star tup because th ere is not 4.5

GB of memory available to the PSE36 driver for database buffers.

Likew ise, if you set VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY to 3 GB, an error occurs

because the O racle8i address space is limited to 3 GB on Window s NT,

and this address space must also hold Oracle8i code, shared p ool, PGA

    mem ory, and other structures.

In general, the higher the VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY or AWE_

WINDOW_MEMORY is set, the fewer connections and mem ory

allocations are possible for Oracle8i. The lower VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY or AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set, the lower th e

    performance.

    7. After these param eters are set, the Oracle8i database can be started and

function exactly the sam e as before except th at m ore database buffers

are available to the instance. In add ition, disk I/ O may be reduced since

more Oracle data blocks can be cached in the SGA. If out of memory

errors occur du ring the startu p sequence, verify the following:s PSE36 dr iver is installed an d functional

s DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS is not set too high for the am ount of

memory in the compu ter. Note that more mem ory than just the

database buffers themselves is required when starting up the

database. For each database bu ffer, a da tabase buffer header is also

allocated in Oracle8is virtual address space. When allocating

2,000,000 database bu ffers, the mem ory for these bu ffer head ersamou nts to several hund red megabytes. This mu st be considered

when sett ing DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS and VLM_BUFFER_

    MEMORY.

s VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY is not set too h igh for th e am ount of

add ress space available to Oracle8i. In Window s NTs Performance

Monitor, und er the Process object, monitor the Virtu al Bytes

counter for the "ORACLE" process. If this counter approaches 3 GB,

then out of m emory errors can occur. If this happ ens, reduce DB_

    BLOCK_BUFFERS and/ or VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY until the

    database is able to start.
