Through talks, workshops, activities and a book fair, join us to enjoy and explore the range of writing that informs our understanding of contemporary China, history and culture. From best-selling authors and acclaimed screenwriters to published poets and award-winning journalists, China in Context highlights talent, themes and topics that are mainstream in the world’s second largest economy and available here in London for those with the curiosity to seek them out. China in Context will welcome the following writers to Chinatown in 2018: Yan Geling – prolific novelist whose novels The Lost Daughter of Happiness, The Uninvited, and The Flowers of War, have secured her role as one of China’s leading contemporary writers. Su Tong – best-selling author whose most famous work outside of China was adapted to become the award-winning Zhang Yimou film, Raise the Red Lantern. Roger Lee – Award-winning writer and producer whose films have transformed Hong Kong Cinema. Xinran – British Chinese writer whose work The Good Women of China, China Witness, and Miss Chopsticks gave UK audiences a better understanding of modern China. Ching He Huang – TV chef, writer and authority on Chinese cuisine whose recipe books include Stir Crazy, Eat Clean: Wok Yourself to Health, and Ching's Fast Food: 108 Quick and Healthy Chinese Favourites. China in Context 2018 is organised by China Exchange and Cypress Books. This year’s festival is supported by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and Chinatown London.

Read all about it – Best-selling writers gather at Chinatown festival

China in Context celebrates writers and writing from and about China in London’s

Chinatown. Through talks, workshops, activities and a book fair, join us to enjoy

and explore the range of writing that informs our understanding of contemporary

China, history and culture.

From best-selling authors and acclaimed screenwriters to published poets and

award-winning journalists, China in Context highlights talent, themes and topics

that are mainstream in the world’s second largest economy and available here in

London for those with the curiosity to seek them out.

China in Context will welcome the following writers to Chinatown in 2018:

Yan Geling – prolific novelist whose novels The Lost Daughter of Happiness, The Uninvited, and The Flowers of War, have secured her role as one of

China’s leading contemporary writers.

Su Tong – best-selling author whose most famous work outside of China

was adapted to become the award-winning Zhang Yimou film, Raise the Red Lantern.

Roger Lee – Award-winning writer and producer whose films have

transformed Hong Kong Cinema.

Author of many best-selling novels, including The Lost Daughter of Happiness, The Uninvited and The Flowers of War, Yan Geling is one of China’s leading contemporary writers. Hear her in conversation with two of her translators, Nicky Harman and Lawrence Walker.

The Future Is Female With Roseann Lake

Wednesday 7 March 6:30pm-7:30pm Free

Join us at Guanghwa Bookshop to discover how it is single women who are the most powerful force in ushering the world’s next superpower into a new future. Roseann Lake is a journalist and producer for the Economist, and author of Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World’s Next Superpower. She was a television reporter in China for 5 years.

Winner of the Man Asian Literary Prize, Su Tong’s 苏童 acclaimed

book Wives and Concubines was adapted into the Academy Award-

winning film Raise the Red Lantern 《大红灯高高挂》. Listen as he discusses

the themes behind some of his best-known works.

Xue Xinran 薛欣然: ten years since “Miss Chopsticks”

Miss Chopsticks, published in 2008, follows the experiences of three young migrant workers who moved to Nanjing in search of opportunities. In this

talk, British Chinese writer Xinran 薛欣然 will discuss the changes she has

seen in the decade since Miss Chopsticks.

China in Context is a UK celebration of writers and writing from and about China.

Following a successful short run in May 2017, the festival returns for a fortnight

from 5-18 March. China in Context is organised by China Exchange and Cypress

Books.
