I read that little saying again this week as I was thinking about our search for a new primary teaching pastor. I think you would agree with me that growing things change and that is exactly where we are at this moment as a church. Two and a half years ago in response to the national recession LBF made some significant cuts in both program and staff. It was the right decision at the time and has helped us remain financially stable during a very difficult time. But now is the time to respond to the health and growth we are experiencing here at LBF. So with all this change you may be asking, “Who is going to be doing what?” and “How will the roles of the staff change?” Here is a brief overview to answer those questions. Primary Teaching Pastor We believe in team here at LBF and this new teaching pastor will become part of the teaching team. Because of the other responsibilities that Jeff and I have we will teach less than this new person, but we will still be part of the teaching team. The new teaching pastor will teach at a majority of the Sunday services and he will also be writing curriculum for our small group ministry. Help! It’s Dark...

Who’s Doing What?By Pastor Gary Keith, Lead Pastor

There’s an old adage that says, “The only person who likes change is a baby with a dirty diaper.” But change is a real part of all of our lives. Whether in our family, our school, our job, or our church, change is something we cannot escape. To help me maintain a good perspective on all of this I have in my office this reminder about change: 1. Healthy things grow.2. Growing things change.3. Changing things challenge us.4. Lead Pastor As Lead Pastor my role will be to be part of the teaching team but also to develop and guide the pastoral staff in our mission and vision as a church. I will oversee seven pastors, including the primary teaching pastor, in setting a path for future ministry here at LBF. I will lead, equip, and provide accountability for the pastoral staff and other teams as they carry out the vision of the church, as well as provide visionary, strategic, and collaborative leadership for the life and ministry of the church as a whole. The job of the Church Administrator is another vital role, and one which is NOT part of my job description as Lead Pastor. Thankfully we have Russ Parker who has been doing this for the past 6 years. His duties include all of the day-to-day functions relating to finances, facilities, communication, insurance, legal issues, human resource issues, computer systems and all things relating to the internet, social media and our web site. This is a huge job that requires someone who is focused directly on these areas full time.

Pastor of WorshipJeff will continue to be part of the teaching team but there is much to be done in the area of worship here at LBF. Jeff ’s position will focus primarily on the worship music ministry, and I can assure you, there is far more that goes into Jeff ’s role than what is seen by the congregation Sunday morning. What you experience on Sunday is the product of more than a week’s work of music arranging, meetings, communication, rehearsals, and technical aspects that would boggle the mind. Jeff is also currently leading and pastoring more than 35 adults within the worship ministry. That many people take time to cultivate relationship, encourage pastorally, and motivate musically. Jeff has many new and exciting things to implement within the

adult worship ministry as well as in our children’s dept. but has been limited in what he is available to do because of the half time commitment to teaching. As I said at the beginning of this article, change will always be a real part of our life. I know many in our church are experiencing significant changes in their job roles. And here at LBF we are experiencing change in the roles of staff as well. But even though it may be challenging, because change is challenging, I’m very excited for what God has for us. As we see people grow in their relationship with Jesus and as we get out into our community loving people in tangible ways, it is my prayer that many will come to an eternal faith in Jesus. After all, that’s what this is all about.

A New School Year!By Pastor Matt Sasso, Pastor of Student Ministries

At this point school is back in session for many of our students. The staff and I have heard the students wishing summer was longer, read Facebook posts about class schedules, and are even planning on visiting students at their performances and games. If you are the parent of a Jr. High or High School student we want you to know that we want to be a part of your student’s life as they know, trust, love, and follow Christ. To accomplish this we are focused on three things…

Appreciation to Summer TeamBy Dale Palmer, His Kids Children’s Ministries

So sad to see summer is over and things have geared up for school already! Just tell me, is time speeding up or what? Seems like just yesterday we were beginning the Summer quarter. Thank you so much for being an important part of our 2011 Summer Team. You are a blessing to us and we wanted to let you know that. Hey church, how about a big high five to the following people who served this summer?

HELP! IT’S DARK IN HERE AND I CAN’T GET OUT!By Dale Palmer, Director of His Kids Children’s Ministries Did you know that we have quite a variety of puppets that are just waiting to be used for the glory of God? They have been stored in cardboard boxes for a year now and are anxious to get out to see the light of day! I am looking for some strong arms to bring our puppets to life.

Why join the puppet team?

1. It is a great way to reach out to people with the Gospel of Christ in a fun way. This year we will be more proactive in serving our church and reaching out to our community through the avenue of puppetry. 2. If you are shy, you get to hide behind a curtain – so no one in the audience really knows who is doing what. 3. You get to be creative and put your creative juices to good work. 4. Training is provided. You’ll learn proper techniques for good puppetry skills. 5. You will make new friends that are involved in something worthwhile. 6. It’s just plain FUN!

If you’re in at least the 5th Grade through adults, P.A.T.H. (Puppets Announcing Truth & Hope) Puppet Ministry has just the place for you!

The P.A.T.H. Puppet Team starts this fall with an Introduction & Parents’ Meeting on Monday, September 12, @ 4:00 p.m. in Rooms 104/105. Our first practice will begin shortly after a short parents’ meeting. Come prepared to fill out a registration form to get on board. Our regular time of practice will be Monday afternoons; 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. unless the team decides there’s a better time to practice. We meet during the school year right here at Life Bible Fellowship Church in Rooms 104 & 105. Come join the adventure and grow in your faith, your creativity and your love of Jesus.

Page 3: Reaching Up. Reaching Out.

We want your students to help students Reach Their Friends. We know that God will do great things in your student’s life as they discover what it means to be a light in their schools and neighborhoods. During the year we are constantly helping students learn how to talk about their faith and what God has done in their life, while their friends who they invite hear about Jesus.

We want your student to Grow In Christ. All through the year we want students to grow in their relationship with Christ. We hope that everything we do will help students grow in Christ, but one of the main ways is that students attend our mid-week services. The reason is, at our mid week groups there are committed staff members who are caring for a certain gender and grade. Each student in those groups is prayed for and cared for by a person who is committed to helping your student grow in Christ. This happens in our small groups as students meet together and talk about the message in groups with these specific leaders. We can never say enough of how important it is for students to have Christ centered relationships; this includes not only their peers but also caring adults who have a deep passion to disciple students.

We want your student to Serve Others. This year we hope that students will learn to serve other people. Whether it is handing out food to homeless people, getting involved in a service project, or through simple acts of kindness and generosity in their school, we want students to serve because that is what Jesus did.

If you are the parent of Jr. High or High school student, don’t miss out on what is happening in the youth ministry at LBF Church. Here are a few suggestions: “LIKE” our fan page on Facebook. It is one of the methods of communication that we use. Second, make sure your student has filled out a student communication card. From this card we get names and addresses where we mail out a printed calendar for the address that we collect. We hope that this will get you the information that you need. Put it on the fridge and talk about what has already happened.

Lights! Camera! Action!By Pastor Gary Keith, Lead Pastor

I don’t know whether people making movies still say those famous words – Lights! Camera! Action! – anymore but those three words remind me so much of our relationship with Jesus. When a director calls out “Light’s and Camera” he’s asking for a readiness. He wants those lights and cameras on and ready to go. He’s ready to capture the action that is about to start. And so it is with our life in Jesus. There is a need for readiness. There is a need to have the lights on and the camera on and rolling so that when we are called into action we are ready. Jesus has always been about lights, camera and action about readiness about relationships, about love in action and that is what our next teaching series will be about – “Love in Action.”

We are going to learn about action oriented love by digging into both the Old Testament and the Gospels. When it comes to “Love in Action” what does the Lord call for? There is a familiar verse in the Bible that even has a song written about it – Micah 6:8. It goes like this: He has showed you, O man (people), what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (NIV) This seems pretty clear doesn’t it? To have an action-oriented love we are to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly. Micah is an Old Testament prophet. We don’t connect too much with the OT prophets today but they played a very important role in the life of the Nation of Israel. And because Micah’s words are recorded for us in the Bible it’s important for us to hear them and to learn from them. After all, it wouldn’t

be a good thing if one day while you’re in heaven and you run into Micah and he asked you how you liked his book and you never read it. That’s not good! But what does acting justly and loving mercy and walking humbly mean to Christians today? How are we to be involved with issues of justice and mercy and love? How is our love to be action oriented? This is where the words of Jesus will help. For nine weeks starting on September 25th we are going to listen to the words of the prophet Micah and combine that with the words of Jesus and learn what it means to put “Love in Action.” I sincerely hope that after this series we will never be the same either as individuals or as a church. I pray that God will use this study to change our hearts and our attitudes and learn how to put “Love into Action.”

By Pastor Matt Sasso, Pastor of Student Ministries

Several weeks ago if you attended services on August 21, 2011, you got to see some of our students living out ministry. You were led in worship not only by some of our staff but one of high school students, Erin Methvin. You also saw two of our students, Helen Wood and Camile Braeger, perform a drama about the struggles of sharing your faith. In addition, Jr. High and High School students served communion to the congregation. In many ways you witnessed students engaging in ministry.

Every time we get the opportunity to worship as community we enjoy it and we hope that you do too! Our purpose is simple, bringing together every generation to worship Jesus Christ.

In addition to worshiping with you, we asked if during that morning God would speak to your heart about serving in the youth ministry of Life Bible Fellowship Church. Our hope was that every person would be challenged to share his or her faith more. In our lives there are a number of ways that can happen, but one that is close to our hearts is people to serve with teenagers. Every week we have students who come to our mid week services that are not part of the church. Every week we see it as an opportunity to share Christ and help someone begin relationship with Christ.

But that does not happen with people who are committed to serving teenagers and helping them in some of the most difficult times of their lives. We are praying that you heard God speaking to you about serving in youth ministry. If you did, we encourage you to talk to someone you know who is involved and let them share with you the blessing that they have experienced serving students. Also you can contact me at the church office so we can begin talking about the next steps.

KFC (Kids for Christ)A Club for kids, NOT for chickensBy Dale Palmer, Director of His Kids Children’s Ministries

FUN! GAMES! BIBLE LESSONS, SNACKS, FRIENDS & OTHER SURPRISES!

Our midweek Bible club for kids Grades Kindergarten – 6th, will be starting Tuesdays this fall on September 6. We meet at 6:45 - 8:30 p.m. each Tuesday evening during the school year in Rooms 102/103 (also known as Worship Island) of the Worship Center. Kids are welcome to come as early as 6:30 p.m. for pre-KFC free play time in the Rooms 102/103 only. We will begin our program right at 6:45 – 8:30 p.m. each Tuesday evening. At the end of the evening, children are released to parents/guardians only – no exceptions unless written instructions are received with the child’s registration.

KFC’s curriculum (Faithweaver Friends® by Group Publishing) is based on one Bible point per evening, for example: POINT: God Cares for Us. Everything in each learning station emphasizes that one point, including the Bible verse and story we learn. The points are not sequential so kids can join Club at any time. As the club is not a budgeted item, dues are collected at the beginning & mid-way through the year to help with curriculum and expenses. No child will ever be told he/she cannot attend because they cannot pay – scholarships are available. Any funds left over at the end of the year go to a year-end party for the kids.

You can register the FIRST night of KFC. We will have volunteers ready to receive your registration & dues the first night at 6:15 pm in the Worship Center foyer. For your convenience, you can also pick up a registration packet in the elementary hallway to fill out and have ready for the first night – look for the KFC poster and display. If you have questions, you can call Dale Palmer @ 981-4848, x242 or email [email protected].

LBF Global: Short Term TripsBy Carol Hawkins, Missions Coordinator

In August we had several departures on missions trips.

Megan Robinson is currently serving in Kipkaren, Kenya for two months. Be praying for her as she works with the children in the orphanage and helps Michelle Kiprop in the clinic.

Amanda (Mandy) Rana is settling into her life in Chiang Rai, Thailand, where she will be teaching for the upcoming school year. She’ll be teaching at the Chiang Rai International Christian School, which is located in the same city as our long-term missionaries, Pete & Mary Quesenberry (who were with us in July).

Team Kenya – By the time this Scroll reaches you, Team Kenya will just be returning from their trip to Kipkaren, Kenya. They worked on a building project as well as helping out in the clinic and in the orphanage.

Jeremy Moore is currently traveling through the US with the African Children’s Choir. Keep him in your prayers as he handles all the sound for the performances, and also as he is a chaperone for the children.

BECKY SKILBRED:

Becky recently returned from a 6 week trip to the Dominican Republic. Becky and her team were able to participate in many ministry opportunities to bless lives, and Becky also served as a translator. Below are some of her thoughts:

“Working in the Dominican Republic was a life changing experience. I am exceedingly grateful for my clinical team from Azusa Pacific University, which had one mind in being the hands and feet of Christ. Every person on our team was encouraging, and put the needs of the other members before their own. We all took great care to make sure that each person who came through our clinic was prayed with (usually at every station of our clinic). I have never worked with such encouraging people who have the passion for serving God and His creation.

My highlights of the trip include playing with the children in the sugar cane bateys (a company town where sugar workers live) in La Romana, and being saved by an eighty-year-old sugar plantation worker from a spider the size of my hand! However, I was exceedingly saddened by the

condition of the sugar plantations, and the poor treatment of their workers. Some of these workers had never seen a physician in their entire lives, and simple illnesses had progressed to severe medical conditions. We were relieved that the medication we brought was able to help them receive life giving healing that they needed. We were able to provide clinics to underserved areas in five different cities in the Dominican Republic in the six weeks we were there, and we were able to see approximately 3,200 patients. We were also able to help in the construction of a missionary seminary and do various projects (including planting a garden) at an orphanage in Santiago.

I definitely would like to thank my LBF family for their prayers and financial support. Thank you for sending me to bless and be blessed by the Dominican people.”

Special thanks to the LBF family for supporting Becky and our other missionaries to serve in their locations. Through these men and women, God is at work touching many lives with His amazing word and His arms of love.

REACHING OUT: LBF GLOBALBy Carol Hawkins, Missions Coordinator

The missions department at LBF has experienced a very busy summer, with short term trips as well as visits from our long term missionaries. Last month we were privileged to have a visit from Tom and Terry Velnosky. Tom, Terry and their family were part of LBF for many years, and then 16 years ago they moved to Texas to begin working with Mercy Ships from the international headquarters. Mercy Ships is a ministry that currently has one hospital ship that travels to 3rd world countries providing surgeries and medical care to people who are in desperate need of such care. Tom is the procurement officer and it is his job to obtain all the equipment so that the ship is able to function with state-of-the art medical equipment. Mercy Ships is truly amazing and you can learn more by checking out their website: mercyships.org. It was wonderful having Tom & Terry here to visit and reconnect with LBF, and I know all of you who met them agree.

Thank you LBF family for your faithful support that enables us to reach out around the world through Mercy Ships. God is using you to bring healing and hope to the poorest of the poor - to be the arms of Christ.
