Addressing  CCSS  ² Requires  reworking  curriculum

² Demands  attention  to  reading  in

the  Social  Studies  classroom

² Steps  up  the  accountability  for  engaging  instruction

² Necessitates  the  use  of  primary

sources  and  challenging  texts

² Allows  room  for  diverse  teaching  strategies  and  utilization  of  diverse

teaching  materials

What does this mean for the

Social Studies classroom? Curriculum  Changes  –  Few

Instructional  Strategy  Changes  –  YES  Resource  Changes  -‐  DEFINITELY

How  must  instructional  strategies  change?

Students  Must:  •  Read  more  •  Analyze  more  •  View  more  •  Evaluate  more  •  Compare  more  •  Consider  more  •  Integrate  more  •  Assess  more

Teachers  Must:  •  Use  strategies  that  will

engage  students  •  Be  creative  to  interest

students  •  Be  motivational  to

encourage  student  reading

•  Keep  curriculum  moving  to  cover  all  standards  and  address  all  content

A note about “texts”

The  Common  Core  Standards  refer  to  the  use  of  texts  in  almost  every  standard.    This  does  NOT  mean  a  textbook.    It  simply  means  any  content  provided  to  students,  most

often  that  in  written  form.

Be  creative.    Use  a  variety  of  written  (and  visual)  sources  in  your  classroom  to  keep  your  students  curious  and

interested  in  reading  and  learning.

Classroom  resources  are  all  around  us  every  day.    It’s  identifying  those

resources  and  learning  to  use  them  effectively  in  your  classroom  that

makes  all  the  difference.

Another  thing  to  consider  is  the  amount  you  invest  in  your  classroom

each  year  for  resources.    If  your  school  only  provides  textbooks,  you  may  want  to  utilize  the  free  materials  you  can  find,  yet  sometimes,  even

the  resources  that  cost  can  save  you  valuable  time,  energy,  and  stress!
