Report for 2009

Annual Report

What a year we had in 2009. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the World Championships in June where the Scottish team put in a superb performance over the first two days and a world beating effort on the third day to take third place overall behind England and France. Although Scotland had previously achieved a silver at the European Championships this was the highest position that we have ever achieved at World level.

World Championships

Team preparations started out the year before when 22 hopeful anglers competed over four days of eliminators with the top five of David Chalmers, Simon Cocker, Calum Crosbie, Donald Forbes and James Litster going on to form the five man team. Dick Logan was the team captain and reserve with the team being managed by George Mackenzie. This was a strong team with David Chalmers, Simon Cocker, Dick Logan and George Mackenzie having previously competed at this level and of course George Mackenzie managed the Scottish team that took silver at the European Championships in 2003. More detail on the World Championships is given in the World Fly Fishing Championship report.

Scotland’s World and European teams have always been managed by SANACC/SANA Competitions Section and it is very disappointing, particularly in view of this years’ successes, that SANA have decided to withdraw SANACC’s authority to manage those teams and to attend to the management themselves. We wish the World and European teams every success in the future.

Early Season Problems

The 2009 season started badly with the temporary closure of the Lake of Menteith and as a result the first two heats of the National Championship and the first heat of the Scottish Club Championship had to be rescheduled. Jim Hunter, National Championship Secretary, spent a weekend arranging alternative venues and then phoning the 120 competitors to let them know where they would be competing. Each of these heats was split into two with one half of each heat being held at Butterstone and the other two halves being held at Carron. Almost every competitor turned up at their rearranged venue and we are grateful to Jim for dealing with this problem over a weekend and to the management at Butterstone and Carron for their help. What should have been the first heat of the Scottish Club Championship was rescheduled to become the last heat.

The competition strength of Scottish angling clubs was clearly seen at this years’ Anglian Water Airflow Final at Rutland in October. Scottish Club Champions, Change FF, won this two day event with six trout more than their rivals. Neilston FF were an excellent third; Gargunnock were

National Championship

Partial catch and release or time bonus systems were used during the National Championship sessions. The competitors were restricted to a bag limit of three fish followed by catch and release at the Lake of Menteith semi finals and at the final there and this worked well at each of these sessions. All of the heats, semis and final (subject to approval by each fishery) of the 2010 championship will be partial catch and release with competitors going on to catch and release after the first three legal fish have been killed. In an effort to get the best from Loch Leven the semi there in 2010 will be held over a 2pm to 10pm session.

River International

The International Rivers Team had a rare setback this year when they travelled to Wales in June for the International match. The competition was held for the first time on the River Taff and was won convincingly by Wales with the Scottish team finishing in fourth place. A regular team manager is still being sought. The rivers team have been ultra consistent for a number of years and no doubt they will bounce back from this result.

Loch Internationals

Various activities were put in place by the team members to raise funds to offset their costs at the two loch internationals. Jock Kettles (Spring Team Captain) and Campbell Morgan (Autumn Team Captain) organized fund raisers at Markle and Craufurdland and along with the other activities a total of £4,382 was raised all of which went towards their accommodation costs. We are grateful to everyone who took part these events or donated prizes or bought tickets. While there is not enough space to list all of the individuals, clubs, businesses and fisheries who donated funds, prizes or facilities particular mention must be given to the Glasgow Angling Centre and the Lake of Menteith Fishery along with Craufurdland and Markle fisheries who provided the fundraising venues.

The year started well for the loch internationals with John Ross coming back on board as the team manager.

The Spring International was held in May at Chew Valley Lake and weather conditions during the practice days were near perfect. However as so often seems to happen the weather took a turn on competition day with the warm and calm practice days being replaced by a cold, wet and very blustery competition day. Once again there was a very tight finish with the first three teams only being separated by three fish. England with 47 fish caught more than any other country but were beaten by the weight of the 44 fish caught by Wales. Scotland also had 44 fish but could not match the weight of the top two and took the bronze.

The Autumn match was held in September at the Lake of Menteith and on this occasion the week started off wet and windy but improved to give good conditions on the competition day.

The Scottish team put in a magnificent performance and with a total of 108 fish they were 34 fish clear of their nearest rival. The winning margin of 69lbs is the largest ever in the history of the internationals. The Brown Bowl for the top rod on the day was won by Andy McKay with 11 fish for 23lb 01oz and the top four individual places went to the Scottish rods of Andy McKay, Erlend Hutchison, Sandy McConnachie and Ken Oliver. Three other Scottish rods finished in the top ten with Andy Dunn, Campbell Morgan and Jim McBride being 8 th , 9 th and 10 th .

We will not have a home advantage in 2010 when the internationals will be at Lough Conn and Llyn Trawsfynydd.

Committee

During the year two elected committee members (Jim Hunter and Robert Irvine) and one co opted committee member (Dr Neil McCarry) resigned their positions. Robert has been the Rivers Secretary for a number of years and although Jim was only elected in March 2009 he had previously served on the Committee as a Regional Rep and Chairman. It is becoming increasingly difficult for people to find the time needed to devote to committee positions and the SANACC Committee are grateful to Jim and Robert for the time and commitment that they have given to SANACC. Dr Neil McCarry successfully prepared and submitted the Scottish bid to host the 2009 World Championships and thereafter managed the planning and running of that event. Neil was coopted for the duration of the World Championships and stood down once they had been held. There is no doubt that Scotland and Scottish angling has benefitted from these Championships coming to Scotland and we can’t thank Neil enough for the work that he did in bringing them here and running them so successfully.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward to June, 2011 we will be hosting the International at Loch Harray on Orkney. It is over 20 years since Loch Harray was used as an international venue and once again this will be an occasion not to be missed. The qualifier for the 2011 teams will be the 2010 National final so if you want to have a chance of making the Orkney team make sure you get your entry in for the 2010 National Championship. Entry forms for the 2010 National were sent to your club secretary with this report.

Amendments to our Articles of Association will be necessary to comply with the implementation of the Companies Act 2006 in respect of proxy voting at AGMs and further detail on this issue is provided in a separate report.

Competition Results

The 117 th Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship Supported by the Glasgow Angling Centre

The final of the 117 th Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship was held again this year at the Lake of Menteith. Around 380 anglers entered this years’ competition of which 48 went through to the final. 289 fish were caught which was slightly down on the year before. The bag limit for the final (and the semi finals at the lake of Menteith) was set at 3 trout and competitors reaching their limit then went on to catch and release. Trout were capped at 4lb and an allowance of 2lb was awarded for each one returned. 44 anglers caught limit bags and 149 trout were returned. The winner, Steven Nicoll, with 14 trout was 3 clear of his nearest rival with the following five anglers only being separated by one fish. The competition got off to a bad start with the temporary closure of Menteith and the first two heats, which had been scheduled to be held there, had to be moved to Carron and Butterstone. We are grateful to the management of these venues for their help in rescheduling. Two sessions had to be rescheduled due to weather conditions. Congratulations are due to S Miller (SANA Youth) for making it through to the final and finishing a creditable 32 nd . The competitors appreciated receiving a printed set of results on the day and we are indebted to Eleanor Campbell for once again recording the catches and printing off the results.

Following last years successful river’s final, which was held on the River Tweed on a Sunday for the first time, the National Rivers Final for 2009 returned once more to the hallowed waters of the

Tweed. Once again the St Boswells, Newton & District AA club hosted the 20 finalist, all vying to be crowned Scottish Rivers Champion and grab one of the 5 automatic places on the “bus” to England for the 2010 Home International.

The interest shown in this year’s championship has been very encouraging with numbers closer to what they were of 5 years ago. And the effort and commitment being shown by those entering the competition is remarkable. This was further reflected in those who made the final, with hours of hard practicing going in to hone methods and to locate the best fish holding areas. Alas the 3 months of virtual drought conditions through the early part of the summer, when most were putting in the hard graft, were replaced with raging torrents in the days leading up to the event. More concerning was the risk that the final would have to be rescheduled!

Fortunately the river dropped and cleared enough to make fishing possible, if a tad challenging. Many of the favored lies were unreachable due to the height of the water, so it was very much a case of using innate river craft skills to locate the fish on the day. As usual the holygrail to finishing well was scoring in all 4 sessions, something that only Jake Harvey and Robert Irvine were able to do. With the quality of field on show, this was a clear indicator of how difficult the conditions were.

So for the third time local stalwart Jake Harvey finished top of the pile and regained the coveted title of Scottish National Rivers Champion. Finishing a close second was Robert Irvine, who after a few years of narrowly missing out will finally get his first full cap in 2010. The everpresent Grant Gibson finished 3 rd . The remaining two places were made up of two new caps, Kenny Riddell and John MacLennan and the travelling reserve, Charlie Young, is also a new face on the international scene.

Our sincere thanks go to St Boswells, Newton & District AA for the use of this special river and to Gillies Breckenridge, Grant Gibson, Jake Harvey, and Paul Buchanan who all committed so much of their time and effort to ensure the success of this event. We would also like to extend our thanks to Pitlochry Angling Club for the use of their waters during the prelims.

The team for the 2010 International will be Jake Harvey (Captain), Grant Gibson. Robert Irvine, Kenny Riddell and John MacLennan. The travelling reserve is Charlie Young.

Hosts Wales produced a scintillating performance on their own patch to ensure the Home International was won in some style, with an average rod return of over 18 fish per man! England and Ireland fought a close battle for the runners up spot, with England eventually taking the silver with only 3 fish to spare.

Scotland did not fair so well with their lowest ever score since the event began. Recent successes were firmly forgotten as the realization of finishing in last place kicked in. The reality is that with no financial backing and no team manager, the result is hardly surprising. Reconnaissance missions are funded from the team’s own pockets, which really limits the amount of practice that can be achieved.

Despite the gloom, Scotland did register some success by wining the Mike Childs trophy for the largest fish of the event, which was caught and returned by Grant Gibson.

Page 10: SANACC · reaching their limit then went on to catch and release. Trout were capped at 4lb and an allowance of 2lb was aw arded for each one returned. 44 anglers caught limit bags

10

For Scotland to return the glory days of only a few seasons ago, a Team Manager is urgently required to lead the team in England in 2010. Financial backing will be harder than ever to secure with the country gripped by recession, however a team lead by a strong manager will have a much better chance of concentrating on fishing rather than focusing on associated administration and the like.

Next year’s event will be in the North of England on the river Tees, which should make practicing for the Scottish team that bit easier, due to its close proximity to the Scottish Borders.

201 teams participated in the competition with a catch of 2075 trout for 4435lb 06oz. Once again there was a partial catch and release system in the semi finals and final which resulted in 342 trout being returned during these three events.

We are indebted to the Daily Record, Famous Grouse and the Angling Centre Stirling for their continued support and to the staff at the Lake of Menteith who do so much for us throughout the competition by way of assisting at the weighin and finding additional boats when needed. The competitors generously made donations to the Scott MacIvor appeal on behalf of the cardiac unit of Yorkhill Sick Childrens Hospital each Saturday night and at the semis and the final. The generosity of the clubs following the final again this year was overwhelming when almost all of the winners cheques were donated by the clubs to the appeal. Additional funds were added from the proceeds the raffles at the final and the Champion of Champions. A total of £2,400 was raised.
