Message from the Executive Director...

O ctober 16 – 22 is Spiritual Care Week. It’s a time for us

to give special recognition to the Spiritual Counselors on our Hospice of the Calumet Area interdisciplinary team. Spirituality can be defined as our inner belief system. It helps indi-viduals search for the meaning and purpose of life, and it helps them to experience hope, love, inner peace, comfort and support. Most patients and families understand the role

and expertise of the Registered Nurse and Hospice Aide, but often do not know the value that the Spiritual Counselor can bring to their care.

Many use the terms spirituality and religion interchangeably. While there can be an overlap, not everyone is religious, nor is religion a requirement for spirituality. A person may not practice a religion, but may still have spiritual needs that should be met.

This year’s theme, Spiritual Resilience, represents our human ability to gain strength and revise a sense of purpose and meaning during life’s challenging times. Spiritual Coun-selors are specially trained to provide spiritual assessment and promote spiritual well-being through compassionate support. They are especially mindful of the ripple effect the hospice journey has on patients, as well as those around them. As part of the hospice team, Spiritual Counselors integrate care of the mind, body, and spirit for individuals of diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

Spiritual Counselors leave their own faith beliefs at the doors of patients’ homes and meet the patients’ own spiritual needs. The spirit is nurtured in many ways which may include religion, prayer, music, art, life review, and simple compassionate presence. Their goal, like the goal of everyone at Hospice of the Calumet Area, is to enhance

wedding ceremony at the hospice house so her father could share in the celebration. With an absolute “yes” and 14 hours to plan, Amanda asked her father, “Do you want to be at my wedding?” Without hesitation, John’s final request to her was that she go home for his suit so he could be properly dressed for the occasion. Her fiancé’s family arranged for catered food from Teibel’s and a wedding cake while Amanda did some quick shopping with her cousins, choosing a beauti-ful lavender dress to wear.

With her father, 20 of their closest family and friends and hospice staff and volunteers present, Amanda married her best friend, John Fetsis, blending their families to include her son Andy and his son Ari. John passed the next day.

The Biagi-Fetsis family will always cherish their time at the Riley Residence, “We are truly grateful for the unforgettable moment given to us by Hospice of the Calumet Area, a time that we will always treasure, remembering how wonderfully we were treated, the bonds created and the excellent care my dad received.”

Creative Ways to Give! R ecently, Hospice of the Calumet Area Board Member

David Schneider purchased framed photography to hang in his home, and local dentist Dr. Rory Levitan purchased three photos to grace the walls of his newly renovated dental practice. These photos were taken by Schererville resident Joanne Markiewicz, who is a member of Hospice of the Calumet Area’s Board of Directors, Friends of Hospice fundraising auxiliary and the Hospice Artisans. Joanne’s talent and travels allow her the oppor-tunity to take amazing photos which have been displayed at Region galleries. 100% of proceeds from her photo sales, whether online, through a gallery or at a Hospice Artisans show, are donated to HCA and designated for patient care. Joanne’s photos may be viewed and ordered through the website, Joanne-Markiewicz.artistwebsites.com.

Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Zeta Omega Chapter honors HCA

H ospice of the Calumet Area was one of the organizations recognized by the Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Zeta Omega Chapter

at the Sorority’s 10th Annual Purse Auction and Luncheon held on Sunday, August 14, at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville. The Zeta Omega Chapter based out of Highland has planned and executed various fundraisers over the years with the goal of supporting worthy organizations or families in need. At the event the Sorority presented Hospice of the Calumet Area with a contribution of $1,000 towards the support they provide to hospice patients and their families. “We think it is really important to contribute to this wonderful organization. One of our sorority sisters called upon Hospice of the Calumet Area to care for her mother. After her mother passed, she couldn’t say enough about

the care her mother received, as well as the phone calls and comfort she received from the organization as a loved one,” explains Sorority member Maria Diaz.

Hospice Hustle 2016: Event A Success! W e are excited to report that this year’s Hospice Hustle

event, held on Sunday, Sept. 18, was attended by approximately 300 cyclists and volunteers participating in Lake County’s premier cycling event. The event was truly a success with more than $40,000 raised and proceeds to directly benefit patient and family care. A special thank you is extended to event founders and Co-Chairs, HCA Board Member Bill Hasse and Dr. Gus Galante. We are truly grateful for their hard work over the past 12 years to make this one of our most important fundraising vehicles. In addition to the great community support through ridership, we are also grateful to our lead sponsors including Community Healthcare Systems, TREK Bicycle Store, Hasse Construction, Gustavo E. Galante, M.D., First Merchants Bank, Theodoros & Rooth, P.C., N. A. Logan, Inc., Mark F. Kevin, M.D., Meijer, SVT, LLC (Strack & Van Til) and many other local businesses and individuals who helped to make the day a great success. Leave a legacy through estate giving plans

I f you are thinking about how you can help ensure that Hospice of the Calumet Area has a secure future,

maintaining its programs and services for years to come, below are a variety of ways you can include HCA in your estate plans:

Wills Gift a percentage of estate assets or a specific sum of money to Hospice of the Calumet Area in your will.

Life Insurance Complete a “change of beneficiary form” for an existing policy. Transfer ownership of an existing policy or purchase a new policy and make Hospice of the Calumet Area the owner and irrevocable beneficiary.

Retirement Funds Complete a “change of beneficiary form” for your retirement fund naming Hospice of the Calumet Area as a partial or sole beneficiary.

Outright Gifts Gifts of cash or other assets, such as appreciated securi-ties, (any amount) can be contributed to support current or future need.

Cash gifts can also help build our Endowment Fund held at the Legacy Foundation.

We encourage you to discuss these issues with your own attorney or financial advisor. However, if you would like to discuss any of the above options with a repre-sentative from Hospice of the Calumet Area, please feel free to contact our Director of Development, Jenifer Vargo Okamura, at 219-922-2732 or [email protected].
