After being stopped by law enforcement for suspected drunkdriving, there will be field sobriety tests (FST) performed todetermine if a driver is over the legal Blood AlcoholConcentration or BAC limit. There are three methods of bloodalcohol content (BAC) testing normally used in the U.S., the mostaccurate method being a blood test. However, blood tests areinconvenient and invasive; a blood sample must be drawn fromsubjects' veins in a hospital or clinical setting. As a result, breathtests using handheld devices, also called "breathalyzers" and"preliminary breath testers" (PBT), are employed in the field bylaw enforcement to assess BAC. These devices are lightweight, portable, and easy to administer. Breath analyzers estimate BACindirectly by measuring the amount of alcohol in one's breath.Currently there are several breathalyzer technologies which aremost prevalent and used by law enforcement:

Alcohol Handheld field testing devices are generally basedon electrochemical platinum fuel cell analysis and, dependingupon jurisdiction, may be used by officers in the field as a form of"field sobriety test" commonly called PBT (preliminary breathtest) or PAS (preliminary alcohol screening) or as evidentialdevices in POA (point of arrest) testing.

Desktop analyzers generally use infrared spectrophotometertechnology, electrochemical fuel cell technology, or acombination of the two. These devices are usually kept inbooking areas of the holding or jail facility where subjects willblow to give a more accurate reading. The larger desktopdevices tend to have better results than the handheld deviceslaw enforcement often carries.

The Sniffer Flashlight is a passive alcohol sensor built into aflashlight. This gadget has a pump in it which sucks up the airnear the suspect and alerts the officer if it detects alcohol in theair. It includes a high intensity flashlight for night patrols byoffices where applicable. The Sniffer takes less time to check foralcohol presence than to check a driver's license. The Sniffer cancheck alcohol presence/absence with or without a subject's directparticipation. When used without the subject's direct participationit is known as passive sampling, as opposed to active testingwhere the subject blows directly into a mouthpiece or the intakeport. The Sniffer can be used to detect open containers ofalcoholic beverages, or to detect low, ambient levels of alcohol inenclosed spaces such as vehicles, jail cells, or classrooms. Here is a video related to the Sniffer Flashlight.

An ignition interlock device (IID) or breath alcohol ignitioninterlock device is a mechanism, like a breathalyzer, installedon a motor vehicle's dashboard. Before the vehicle's motor canbe started, the driver first must exhale into the device; if the

resultant breathalcohol concentration analyzed result is greaterthan the programmed blood alcohol concentration (which variesbetween countries), the device prevents the engine from beingstarted. Many countries are requiring the ignition interlock as acondition for drivers convicted of driving under the influence, especially repeat offenders. Most U.S. states now permit judgesto order the installation of an IID as a condition of probation; forrepeat offenders, and for first offenders in some states, installation may be mandated by law.

The SCRAM bracelet ("Secure Continuous Remote AlcoholMonitoring") is the world's most widely used and trusted 24/7transdermal alcohol testing system, for use with highrisk, hardcore DUI alcohol offenders. It combines 24/7 alcohol testingwith optional house arrest monitoring in a single device. Thedevice is waterresistant and worn on either leg as a condition ofprobation or parole. It can detect any alcohol consumption viatransdermal measurements throughout the day. Antitamperfeatures are in place to thwart attempts such as placing a flatitem between the leg and the device to block skin contact. Theytypically also function as a normal tether, i.e. providing 24hourlocationbased data on the person's whereabouts, and calling inany violations of either protocol. Both cannot be removed by theuser without it being reported to the base station. The NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration produced a favorablereport on the use of electronic monitoring of DUI offenders, withlower recidivism rates and less cost compared to jail.

Staff in local government, the NHS and security, transport andleisure industries will be first to be targeted as the world's firstfingertouch system to detect alcohol is launched. The device,AlcoSense TruTouch, uses a nearinfrared light to measureblood alcohol content in the skin. Users put their fingers on anoptical touch pad and the reader gives a result within tenseconds, meaning 300 employees an hour can be processed. But unions complained alcohol testing was heavyhanded whilean employment lawyer said most workers had the right to refusea test. AlcoDigital, the company behind the device, says it couldbe used in anything from transport to heavy industry to officejobs such as banking.

Personal Breathalyzers Devices

In recent years, breathalyzer prices have declined while breathtesting technologies have improved. Increasingly, consumers arepurchasing breathalyzers to gauge their own BAC levels afterconsuming alcohol, as well as to monitor underage children withdriving privileges or family members who have alcohol issues.Because of the liability and the high cost of DUI fines, the publichas more devices available to them to determine if they areunder the limit. A large amount of companies are now sellingpersonal Hand Held Alcohol testing devices. Devices have evenbeen designed to work with your smart phone as an attachmentor via Bluetooth.

Whether you use it as a gag giftor as a way to really test your tolerance, you just blow into theside of the watch for five seconds and wait for the watch to giveyou a reading from among the ten different levels. There's even abuiltin sobriety game to test your reactions that sounds hardenough even if you haven't been hanging out with your favoritealcohol friends Jim Beam or Jose Cuervo.

You might chuckle at the idea of a drunk cyclist, but since theyoften share the road with motorists, they can be just asdangerous as an inebriated driver. So if you don't trust yourself toleave your bike locked up after having one too many, this bikelock will only open after you use its builtin breathalyzer. Unlikebreathalyzers installed in cars, which are often required by thelaw after a driver has been arrested for drunk driving, theAlcohoLock is completely optional to use. And for those timeswhen you haven't been drinking, like when leaving for work in themorning, having to lean down and blow into the lock'sbreathalyzer is a little inconvenient. So convincing people to useit all the time, or carry two locks depending on the time of day, might be a hard sell. A smartphone with an active dataconnection is required to take full advantage of the AlcohoLock, and the device does need to be regularly charged, administeringabout 40 bloodalcohollevel tests on a full battery.

The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety, or DADSS,program is a collaborative research partnership between theAutomotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS), representing 17automobile manufacturers, and the National Highway TrafficSafety Administration to assess and develop alcoholdetectiontechnologies to prevent vehicles from being driven when adriver's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) BAC exceeds thelegal limit of 0.08 percent. From its inception, the DADSSprogram has been, and continues to be, working toward avoluntary, nonregulatory countermeasure to reduce drunkdriving. The purpose is to explore the feasibility, the potentialbenefits of, and the potential challenges associated with a morewidespread use of invehicle technology to prevent alcoholimpaired driving
