Dear Friends and Supporters,

Looking back on my first year at Healthy Cities Tutoring, I am filled with awe and gratitude at what you - our tutors, donors, partners and supporters - have helped us accomplish.

Our small and mighty organization of dedicated staff, board members, and school site coordinators recruited, screened, trained, paired, and managed 438 volunteer tutors who supported over 500 students in 13 different schools in the 2018-19 school year. Our tutors contributed over 15,000 volunteer hours!

Each pairing is unique... it takes time to match needs, interests and schedules, all while supporting the teachers, tutors, students, and their families.

Each pairing is heartwarming… the high school tutor who was once tutored themselves, the retired educator who wants to share their love of learning, the parent who wants to make a difference at their child’s school, and the business person who wants to contribute to their community.

I am inspired by the commitment our volunteers make… the relationships they form, the stories they share, the results they achieve, and the impact they have on the child, the family and our community. These relationships are special and can last for years with the tutor becoming like a member of the student’s family. Healthy Cities builds a network of support focused on student success while creating a relationship that extends beyond the classroom.

Education is a cornerstone of our community and Healthy Cities Tutoring meets a critical need. Each day our vision to Reach a Child, Touch a Family, Build a Community is made real through the efforts of all of you.

OUR MISSION

REACH A CHILD TOUCH A FAMILY BUILD A COMMUNITY

Healthy Cities Tutoring helps kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic performance, engagement in learning and self-esteem.

This was a record-setting year for Healthy Cities Tutoring where more than 500 children benefited from one-on-one tutoring. Teachers reported on their year-end program assessment that our tutors impacted both the individual success of their student and the entire classroom. A teacher new to our program enthusiastically reported: “I am so happy with how committed the tutors are and how they have helped my kids TREMENDOUSLY!!!!!” And a veteran teacher wrote: “I am so grateful to have a program that can support students in need of extra help. The tutors are wonderful! I love seeing the connections that form between the students and tutors.”

Parents, too, learn and grow when their child has a Healthy Cities tutor. By establishing and maintaining good communication with the teacher, tutor, and parents, Healthy Cities models active engagement and advocacy for the child. Parents are invited to attend parent education and tutor workshops led by teachers, counselors and other experts on topics relevant to supporting children’s academic, social, and emotional growth and success. Through Healthy Cities’ work with their children, parents who may have fewer resources or less confidence in supporting their child’s education come to know that they have allies in the community.

By connecting over 400 volunteers with students who they come to care about, Healthy Cities Tutoring drives school engagement from the broader community. Our tutors bond with their students, their families, and their teachers, and see themselves as an integral part of the school community and become advocates for education. Healthy Cities is raising awareness, creating connections, increasing our community’s regard for the value of education, and helping children succeed.

Our community is strengthened through each tutor and student pairing. Often, our tutors inspire other family members (spouses, grandparents, parents and siblings) to volunteer as well. Last year, 69 of our tutors were directly related to another volunteer tutor in our program.

Through the work of Healthy Cities Tutoring, tutees and their classmates see citizens of all ages coming into their schools and libraries, serving as role-models and placing value on our youth and volunteerism. These students feel important and valued and, studies show, are more likely to become volunteers themselves as adults. We are proud that each year former Healthy Cities tutees return to our program to become volunteer tutors too.

TOGETHER we raised $332,359!

This donor roll includes cash or stock donations to our Annual Giving Campaign, Perfect Pairings sponsorship, event ticket, raffle ticket and auction purchases; Give Where You Live Matching Campaign; corporate matching gifts; school district and local government support; and grants.

We were overwhelmed by the extraordinary generosity of our long-time supporters, Beth and Mike Hunkapiller, who were the matching gift donors of our annual Give Where You Live Campaign. This was the fifth year the Hunkapillers stepped up to match our 24-hour online giving event which inspired an outpouring of support from our community for the best giving day yet. Over 100 donors came together and helped us raise $62,000 thanks to the Hunkapiller matching gift.

The HCT Scholarship Program was established to recognize outstanding young people who are committed to service and giving back to those younger than themselves in support of their community. The 2018-19 scholarship awards were funded by Carrie Miller Drake and Ellyn Miller Davis in honor of their late mother, Martha Miller Girdlestone, who was a college teacher, cared deeply about education and was a long-time supporter of Healthy Cities Tutoring.

The eight scholarship recipients were Sakina Bambot (Carlmont), Mia Rosenblatt (Menlo School), Genevieve Shane (Sequoia), Katherine Hansen (Sequoia), Cassidy Flynn (Sequoia), Lexi Battaglini (Sequoia), Abby Laing, (Sequoia), and Gabe Montclare (Sequoia).
