Moira Shire Council has been recognised by Cor-rections Victoria for its work in flood recovery at its annual awards cer-emony held in Melbourne last month.

Nominated for its partnership with the Beechworth Correction-al Centre, Dhurringile Prison and Commu-nity Corrections Centre, council’s flood recovery was awarded the Local Council Award as well as the prestigious Commis-sioner’s Award for best project across the state.

Moira Shire Flood Re-covery Manager David Booth said during the March flood event, of-fenders from each facil-ity assisted communities throughout the shire in a number of ways includ-ing filling, transportation and positioning of sand-bags and other work as required.

“Following the emer-gency, offenders from each facility have and continue to carry out tasks such as property clean up, removal of sandbags and hard rub-bish, fence clearing and

repairs,” Mr Booth said. “This work is both physi-cally challenging and time consuming and our community continues to be appreciative of this support.”

Corrections Victoria Acting Commissioner Rod Wise presented the Commissioner’s Award on Thursday, November 22. The partnership be-tween Moira Shire and Corrections Services Victoria is but one of a number of partnerships that have contributed to supporting communities through the March flood

emergency and impor-tantly as recovery con-tinues.

“Involvement from of-fenders in projects such as Moira’s flood recovery provides an opportunity to give back to the com-munity and provides val-uable assistance at a time when it is needed most,” Mr Booth said. “While communities have pulled together and helped themselves, a little assist-ance from others cannot be undervalued.”

Construction works on Sturt Street in Mulwala have been delayed by council due to a neces-sary overhaul of drainage in the area.

Corowa Shire Council’s 2012/2013 Operational Plan provided funding for the construction of Sturt Street between Havelock Street and Inglis Street with an estimated cost of $185,000.

The design for the street had been com-

pleted, but a subsequent investigation of the ex-isting drainage system found it was inadequate for the planned works.

“After detailed survey and investigation it is now evident that the ex-isting drainage system in the area is unable to cater for the proposed new de-sign of Sturt Street,” said Director of Engineering Services John Babbs. “It is necessary to provide a new drainage line prior to constructing the street.” Mr Babbs told council the new drainage would

include a pipeline from Lake Mulwala to Sturt Street, via Erne Street, then along Sturt Street from Erne Street to Havelock Street with provision for a gross pol-lution trap at the Lake Mulwala outfall. The pipeline will also act as an overflow relief for the retention basins in Col-less/Havelock Street and Savage Street.

“The estimate of costs for the work is currently being determined and the cost is expected to be in the vicinity of the

available funds,” Mr Babbs said. “If additional funds appear necessary then the matter will be returned to council for determination.”

Council agreed to re-allocate $185,000 provid-ed for the construction of Sturt Street to the con-struction of drainage and the Erne Street outfall.

Following council’s de-cision it was decided to include the Sturt Street construction in a list of works submitted for Fed-eral Government Roads to Recovery funding.
