70 Derbyshire schools took part in the fourth Sainsbury’s Derbyshire School Games in July. Hosted in the impressive grounds of Mount St Marys College with offsite venues at Heritage High School and Eckington Cricket Club, approximately 1,000 competitors took part, with 87 teams (including a dozen RDSSP school teams) competing in 11 events. 160 leaders including Derbyshire Dales’ students from Highfields, Anthony Gell and QEGS volunteered to umpire, keep times and scores and encourage fellow students. MEET THE STARS OF THE FUTURE

GIFTED AND TALENTED ACADEMY – Supporting ‘Team Me’

Each year we run a two-day Gifted and Talented Sports Academy for our cluster primary schools most promising year 5 and 6 pupils. We teach core skills with workshops on speed and agility, coordination, goal setting and hydration. Using innovative teaching methods such as video playback and introducing them to Team GB young athletes we aim to inspire them and given them confidence in their own abilities. We also focus on subjects such as sleep and diet, mental preparation and subjects like dealing with injury that are outside the remit of a normal PE session or classroom setting but which are crucial for helping students become the best they can be. Our ‘Team Me’ approach helps students focus on their aspirations, setting clear targets and identifying people around them who can help them to achieve their dreams, creating a motivational support network of clubs and people in the local community who can nurture and encourage their talent. We engage parents and increase their understanding of their child’s potential and needs.

SELECTING THE BEST – Learning from Success This year a Sports Hall Decathlon event was held to decide who to invite to the two day Academy held at Highfields School, Matlock on the 24th & 25th July. 127 children tried out for 50 available spaces. The standard this year was extremely high, with some outstanding results. The Academy consisted of both practical and theory sessions which aimed to improve the children’s understanding of what being top athlete is like.

Local national level athletes, Anthony Gell students Olivia & George Holmes (Taekwondo) & and Katie Gigg (Women’s Football) spoke to the youngsters about their experiences & pathways in their respective sports.

YOUNG LEADERS – Supporting the Next Generation

24 volunteer Leaders from Lady Manners, Anthony Gell, Queen Elizabeth’s, Hope Valley & Highfields assisted on all activities, encouraging children and being someone for the children to talk to if they needed it. Some even took on extra responsibility by teaching theory sessions such as Nutrition, Goal Setting & Psychological profiling. The feedback from the children about the leaders was extremely positive saying how encouraging and postive they were helping out on activities.

We are looking for anyone with a taste for adventure - be it rock climbing, sailing, mountain biking, skate boarding as well as a whole host of other adventure

sports. We encourage you to apply. Last year young people from the Dales were rewarded with some great prizes. This year there are 3 iPads up for grabs. Tell us in 250 words why your nominee deserves

SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES MARK – Enter Your School

Many thanks to all of you who returned the Derbyshire PESS Survey back in July. We are absolutely delighted that 18 schools indicated they were applying for the Sainsbury’s School Games award (now, known as the Sainsbury’s School Games Mark). This is a national award to reward schools for their PE and

sport offer. Any school can apply. The final date for submission is 1st October. Application process for Primary & Secondary Schools Please read the criteria carefully as you only have one chance to submit: • Register on the Sainsbury’s School Games website. (The following schools which indicated they were applying still

need to do this: Crich Carr, Cromford, Elton, Turnditch, Middleton and Anthony Gell). • Apply on-line by assessing yourself against the Gold, Silver & Bronze criteria • Bronze level is verified and calculated by the website and will be awarded immediately. Silver & Gold awards need to

be approved before being awarded. (This is why we asked for Sport Mark information on the PESS survey) Click here: https://www.yourschoolgames.com/your_school/sainsburys-school-games-mark Application process for Infant Schools Your award is different in that it is a Derbyshire Sport Mark Award rather than national. (This is because the School Games competitions are only for pupils of primary age. You have already applied for this directly so the SSP will verify & validate your application).
