PROGRAMME
39th REGULAR MEETING
May 22, 2013 – 12:00 nn
Grand Men-Seng Hotel, A. Pichon St., Davao City
Gracious God, so much as been
bestowed upon us. We lack for little and
yet yearn for so much. Continue to teach
us to appreciate what has come to us as
blessing and gift.
Keep on urging and challenging us to
share what we have. Help us to give
generously and freely of our bounty. We
offer thanks for all that has been granted
to us.
Amen.
Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a
beginning. Keeping together is progress. Workingtogether is success.” We have come together at the
beginning of the theme “Peace through Service.” We
have progressed and achieved a lot by keeping our
promise of rendering service to others. I can say that
we have succeeded by working together as one
family and as one body, contrbuting to the
accomplishments of our beloved club through our
individual strengths.
We are almost at the finish line for the Rotary Year
2012-2013. The successes we have achieved would
never have been possible without your support and
continued love for service.
This week and in the following days to come, I
strongly encourage everyone to actively participate
in the planning sessions that shall be taken up by
President-Elect Jing de Vera as we continue our
mission in serving others through the Rotary Year 2013-
2014 theme, “Engage Rotary, Change Lives.”
We, at the Rotary Club of Downtown Davao believe
in the word TEAM and the very essence of its
meaning. Together, Everyone Achieves More!
God bless and may we all have a blessed weekahead us!

From Daisaku Ikeda:
Many years ago, it was the tradition among the Canadian Indian
indigenous people to hold great celebrations when a daughter
came of age. Two daughters of a great chief had reachedadulthood and a feast was being prepared. But news arrived
that enemies to the north were preparing for war.
The daughters went to their father and said, “Dear father!
Someday we will become mothers and will give birth to children
who will grow up to be strong chiefs like you. For their sake,
please invite the people of the north to our celebration.”The
chief couldn’t refuse his daughters, so reluctantly he sent a
message to his longtime enemies and invited them. They came
in great numbers, bringing their wives and children and many
gifts. War songs changed into songs of joy.
Later the two sisters each gave birth to a son, and they becamechiefs called Peace and Brotherly Love. Near Vancouver there is
a beautiful twin-peaked mountain and according to legend, the
two girls who loved peace became these peaks and still watch
over Vancouver today. The heart of even one peace-loving
woman is strong; it can change society and reshape history.
Happy Happy Birthday, May Celebrants!!!

Little Buster Keeps Her City Clean
Wendy Marcus calls herself a bag lady: On her frequent walks
around her neighborhood, she is never without a plastic bag, which she
lls with everything from plastic wrappers to bottle caps to paper clips.
“Litter has always bugged me. Maybe I take after Lady Bird Johnson,”she says, referring to the conservationist (and wife of U.S. President
Lyndon B. Johnson) who, like Marcus, was a Texas native.
When the Rotary Club of Providence celebrated its centennial
in 2011, Marcus and other members of the club’s environmental
committee persuaded 100 Rotarians to join a campaign to reduce litter.
In the now-annual monthlong event, culminating on Earth Day, 22 April,
Rotarians recruit friends and family members to pick up trash – in their
neighborhood, at their children’s soccer games, wherever they can –
for 100 minutes each.
Like Lady Bird Johnson, Marcus also believes in beautication
through planting. In 2012, she planted trees in Providence – her clubdonated eight London plane trees to the city, and high school students
helped plant them in a park across from city hall – and in India – where
from January to March of that year, she led a Group Study Exchange.
When the Rotary Club of Jalandhar Central donated fruit trees to local
farmers, Marcus and her team were on hand to help plant them as a
living reminder of their visit.

Te Rotary Club of Downtown Davao (RCDD) was chartered when Rotary International was celebrating its 88thFoundation Anniversary on February 23, 1993. RCDD then was the 29,258th Rotary club all over the world and the 79thclub in R.I. District 3860. RCDD is the 2nd all-women Rotary club in Davao City, nurtured by its Mother Club - RC Davao. Its siblings are the RCs of South Davao, North Davao, West Davao and East Davao. It started with 26 lady executives ofdifferent professions led by Charter President Evelyn A. Magno, who became the first lady governor of R.I. D3860 in RY2005-06, when Rotary International celebrated its centennial year.
Te Downtowners meet every Wednesday noon first at the Apo View Hotel, then later and currently, at the Grand Men-
Seng Hotel along A. Pichon, Sr. Street, Davao City. Te weekly meetings are spiced up with a variety of interesting programsand fellowships hosted on rotation by the club’s “barkadahan” (peer groups).
On this 20th year of service & fellowship, RCDD continues its annual programs and projects with emphasis on the six(6) areas of focus: 1) Peace & Conflict Resolution, 2) Disease Prevention & reatment, 3) Water & Sanitation, 4) Maternal& Child Health, 5) Basic Education & Literacy, and 6) Economic & Community Development. RCDD’s major partner-in-service is the Mindanao Commission on Women (MCW), under its banner program “Mothers For Peace.”
RCDD’s Center for Hope is the venue for the club’s service projects in partnership with its Rotary Community Corps(RCC), serving the marginalized families of Barangays Centro and Vicente Duterte. Tis monument of service is the legacyof all the club’s past presidents and the Downtown Foundation, Inc. RCDD’s Family of Rotary extends to their youngcounterparts in RMC’s Interact Club and UIC’s Rotaract Club, its sister clubs here and abroad, the city and local governmentof Davao and its service agencies, other NGOs, the business and private sectors, and added this year is the MindanaoCommission on Women (MCW), whose advocacy is to empower women for PEACE in Mindanao through its program on“Food Revolution”
RCDD was a grand slam district awardee during RY 1998-
1999 under the leadership of PP Linda C. esoro, an unprecedentedtrack record in RI D3860. Last RY 2011-2012, RCDD made anotherhistorical milestone as one of the 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club.Tanks to the leadership of Immediate Past President Enerie “Irene”B.Aquino, who likewise led the club in its recognition as “MostOutstanding Club” in Zone 2C and in Mindanao, as it “Reach Withino Embrace Humanity”.
Tis RY 2012-13, under the leadership of President Lagrimas“Lagring” . Acero, RCDD hopes to strengthen its capacity tocontinue serving with the continued blessings of God the Father inheaven for “PEACE HROUGH SERVICE.
