AFA Grad’s work on Display at south lRC

During the spring 2010 semester, AFA student Katrina Fesperman took “Art 288: Studio” as an independent study under the guidance of instructor Jenn Selby. For this course students must conceptualize, create, and publically present a highly-resolved artwork or series of works. For this project Katrina collaborated with the South Campus LRC to create a site-specific series of paintings to be permanently displayed in the LRC. Based on literary elements with a compositional emphasis on color theory, Katrina’s work “Cyclopse-Sea” consists of four canvas panels painted with acrylic.

The artwork can be viewed during regular LRC hours, next to the circulation desk. Katrina also was the first RCCC student to graduate with the AFA degree in May 2010. Art 288 satisfies three credit hours of art electives for the AFA degree. For more information please contact instructors Jonathan Church ([email protected]) or Jenn Selby ([email protected]).

July 23 was Campus Clean-Up Day In preparation for RCCC going tobacco-free volunteers at every RCCC campus location pitched in to tidy up RCCC, focusing on the former smoking areas. Despite brutally hot weather, the volunteers worked through the sweat to make RCCC neater and cleaner. Following is a letter of thanks from Clean-Up Day coordinator Natasha Lipscomb.

Dear Campus Clean-Up Volunteer: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Our Clean-Up Day landed on one of the hottest days of the year, but we made it happen. There aren’t many times when College Administrators,

Faculty, Staff, and Students get together. Kudos to our grounds-keeping and maintenance staff for always keeping ourcampuses clean. There wasn’t much trash, but the cigarette butts were everywhere. Whether at CBTC, South, or North Campus, we appreciate you taking the time to help. Thank you for your support! You help take us one step closer to a Tobacco-Free Campus!

After pilot testing WebAdvisor for the Fall 2009 semester, use of the on-line class registration system has grown steadily, with a vast majority of RCCC students accessing it for the Fall 2010 semester. “Today we celebrate the progress made by students, faculty, staff and the Technology Team as 72 percent of students used this tool to register for Fall 2010 classes,” said Gaye McConnell, vice president of enrollment management and student services. “We

expect this number to increase further for registration purposes.” The following numbers show the progression of students using WebAdvisor since fall 2009. • Fall 2009 – 7% (Pilot Group) • Spring 2010 – 56% (1 in 2 students) • Summer 2010 – 67% (2 in 3 students) • Fall 2010 – 72% (almost 3 in 4 students) “Our next steps in the advising/registration improvement process

webAdvisor Being Used successfullyinclude a plan for teaching/learning how to use Web Advisor, educating students about their program of study, and assisting students in developing an educational plan/map for completing their degree or diploma work,” McConnell added. “Thanks to all faculty advisors and staff who have worked diligently to assist students in using WebAdvisor.”

BIoTECH word of the week

The opening of RCCC’s new facility on the North Carolina Research Campus and the popularity of RCCC’s associate-degree program in biotechnology are fostering increased interest in biotech within our college and larger community. To help us decode what biotech terminology means, the eNews will present a word periodically to help us better understand biotechnology. This week, our biotech term is Recombinant DNA. Recombinant DNA (rDNA) is formed by combining segments of DNA from two different sources. Usually, rDNA is created by combining two or more sequences that would not normally occur together. It differs from genetic recombination in that it does not occur through natural processes within the cell, but is engineered. A recombinant protein is derived from recombinant DNA. The development of rDNA tools and techniques in the early 1970s led to much concern about developing genetically modified organisms with unanticipated and potentially dangerous properties. Recombinant DNA technology has been used for many purposes. The Human Genome Project has relied on rDNA technology to generate libraries of genomic DNA molecules. Proteins for the treatment or diagnosis of disease have been produced using recombinant DNA techniques. In recent years, a number of crops have been modified using these methods as well.
