Not only do the Rayne High Wolves have a new slate of opponents now that districts have been realigned, but they also have a somewhat new starting lineup with a number of new faces.

Depth on both sides of the ball may be an issue this season as a number of key positions will be filled by new starters.

“We have a number of young linemen this sea-son,” stated Rayne High head coach Curt Ware of the 2011 season. “If they

step up and fill in as the season progresses, I think they can help out on both sides.”

Returning key players are quarterback Clar-ence Leger, along with backs Jalen Williams and Brody Bourque.

Leger, a 5-10, 200-pound, junior will return at quarterback where he plans improve both in passing and rushing. 1,045 yards and 12 touchdowns on 193 carries.

“Clarence is a much improved passer from his first year last season,” notes Ware of Leger. “He can run the ball and we’re sure he will im-prove this year.”

Williams and Bourque return to their start-ing positions. Williams, 5-9, 185-pound ju-nior, returns at tailback, while Bourque, 5-10, 200-pound senior, returns at fullback.

Bourque led rushing stats last year withDannie Harmon will also return at tight end.

The 6-2, 200-pound junior, will sure help the Wolf offense as one of few returners.

The lone offensive lineman returning for the

Wolves this year is Malcolm Winbush, a 6-0, 240-pound senior who will return at right tack-le.

New starters for the Wolves on offense are split end senior Lucas Meche, wide back ju-nior R.J. Buchanon, left tackle senior Justin Lavergne, and left guard junior Caleb Bruce.

They are also joined by junior center Bren-non McKnight and junior right guard Dylan Soileaux.

Marcantel will fill in as this year’s punter, and Cody Manuel will take over kicker duties.

Three leaders return on defense for the Wolves this season. Key defensive returners are Dannie Harmon, Billy Marcentel and R.J. Bu-chanan.

Harmon will return at strong safety, Marcan-tel at linebacker, and Buchanan will again fill in at corner back, joined by team mate Quinn Guidry, a 5-9, 150-pound junior.

Junior Trent Duhon (5-9, 170 pounds) will step up into the cor-ner back position and Lucas Meche (5-8, 155-pound senior) will be at strong safety.

Completing the defensive start-ers will be senior Lacy Granger

(6-0, 180-pound defensive end), senior Malcolm Winbush (5-11, 240-pound defensive tackle), sophomore Andrew Broussard (5-9, 160-pound middle guard), and sophomore Grant Menard (5-8, 160-pound free safety).

After two disappointing seasons, the Wolves are hoping to be back in the playoff hunt this year and im-prove their 3-7 overall, 1-4 district slate of last year.

District opponents in their new district lineup are Eunice, Livo-nia, Church Point, Port Barre and Northwest.

Concluding this year‘s outlook, Ware states, “Attitude about win-ning and doing what it takes to win is much improved this year. Our workouts have been really good and we have a chance this year to turn things around.”

We’ll see how this young football squad fares this season.

CROWLEY – Over the last decade, the Notre Dame Pioneers have earned the reputation of being a team that didn’t rebuild, but instead reloaded.

And that reputation is well earned: The Pios have advanced to

the state cham-pionship game six times in the 2000s and have won two state titles during that run.

This year, however, may be a little differ-ent.

Facing a bru-tal non-district schedule once again, along with one of their most chal-

lenging district lineups in years, the Pios find themselves not only reloading, but, in some very critical areas, rebuilding as well.

“This is kind of a combination year for us just because of the youth that is in the backup roles,” said head coach Lewis Cook, look-ing ahead to the upcoming season.

“Last year, we had 24 seniors and 20 juniors and this year we have 19 seniors and 21 juniors. So that’s 40 guys compared to 44.

“It’s pretty similar, but it’s just where certain positions fall. In the

past, we’d lose a few seniors but we’d fill those spots with seniors. In the past, we were able to do that with almost all the positions.

“This year, that’s not happening. So it is a little bit of a combination of things: Some areas are rebuild-ing and some areas are reloading.”

For the record, the Pios lost 15 starters from last year’s state semi-finalist team - eight on offense and seven on defense.

Offensively, the Pios’ biggest question mark is the offensive line, where senior tackle Cole Reiners is the lone returnee.

Joining Reiners on the revamped line is Grant Clark and Christian Hundley at guards, Andrew Valdetero at center and Andrew Breaux at tackle.

“Grant Clark played a lot last year so he does have game-time experience with the game on the line,” said Cook. “But the other three guys will be playing for the first time in varsity action when the game counts.”

Brandon Sonnier and Jackson Landry will split time at tight end this year. Both saw action in 2010.

“They have been on the field and in the heat of battle so that helps,” said Cook.

Another big void for the Pios is at wide receiver, where standout Zac D’Aquin was lost to gradua-tion. D’Aquin was the Pios’ leading wideout last year after hauling in 20 passes for 489 yards and four touchdowns.

Filling the roles there this sea-son will be Blake Miller and Josef Schmid.

“If we can stay healthy, Blake Miller and Josef Schmid give us two quality wide receivers,” said Cook. “I think they can make some really big plays for us.”

The Pios will also be replacing nearly their entire offensive back-field after losing seniors Stu Cook and Logan Venable. That duo com-bined to post over 1,200 yards and 22 touchdowns a year ago.

The new backfield will con-sist of Jacob Sloane and Austin Thibodeaux at fullback and Nick Gossen at tailback.

“In the backfield, we’ll be a lit-tle young and inexperienced,” said Cook. “Jacob played a little bit last year, but neither one of them are seasoned veterans. At tailback, Nick and Luke Broussard will spell one another. They played a little bit last year, but they will be starting for the first time.”

The cupboard isn’t completely bare.

The Pios do return Waylon Young at quarterback. The senior took over under center after the third game last year and completed 54 passes for 961 yards and 10 touch-downs.

“Having Waylon back is really going to make a difference for us,” said Cook. “He’s really had a good spring and a good fall. I think he’s going to do some really good things.

“Overall, we have a little experi-

ence and a little bit of a nucleus, but we still have some serious questions.”

Defensively, the Pios have four returning starters back, but they will have to fill in a number of key spots, especially in the secondary where they lost standouts Ricky Stoma and Luke Bourgeois.

Stoma, an all-stater, had 48 solo tackles and five interceptions as a senior while Bougeois logged 54 tackles and one interception.

Filling the void left by the duo will be juniors Matt Venable and J.P. Hensgens.

Austin Bordelon returns at free safety and senior D.J. Petitjean is back at cornerback.

“On defense, I think the areas of biggest concern are the two spots we have to fill in the secondary,” said Cook. “With Austin and D.J. coming back, those guys played every game last year and they have quite a bit of experience.

“Matt is one of the safeties and the other corner spot is up for grabs. The safety spot that Matt fills and the cornerbackposition are question marks right now. Matt is a very good player, it’s just that he’s playing that position for the first time.”

Notre Dame also lost heavily at the linebacker position where All-Stater John Rothermel and Will Fruge bothgraduated.

However, the Pios do return

Pios’ reputation of ‘reloading’ well deserved

Connor Goss at a linebacker. He will be joined by newcomers Jacob Melancon and Zach Miller.

“Connor is back and he’s played every game last year,” said Cook. “He’s pretty solid. Jake Melancon is one of the better athletes on the team, but he’s been an offensive lineman for the last two years. He’s playing linebacker for the first time but he does have a lot of game experience under his belt.

“And Zach spotted a little bit last year, but he was mostly a jayvee player.”

The lone retruning starter on the defensive line is Paul LaCroix at tackle. Andre Thibodeaux will play the other tackle and C.J. Hundley and Brent Sonnier will hold down the end slots.

“Paul kind of anchors that d-line,” said Cook. “He played a lot last year and he’s a good player. C.J. played a lot last year also and he’s pretty solid.

“The other tackle and end posi-tion will be filled with guys that will be playing varsity for the first time. That’s a little bit of a concern, but, again, there’s a little bit of a nucleus there of experience which always helps.”

As for the kicking game, Goss is a one-man show.

“We have to hope Connor stays healthy because right now, he’s handling all kicking,” said Cook. “He’s punting, kicking off, extra points and field goals. He did some of that last year, but he wasn’t a full-time guy in any of those areas so that’s going to a little bit differ-ent for him.

“He’s a pretty good kicker, but he’s going to be on the field an awful lot.”

ers,” said Cook, noting the roster contains40 juniors and seniors and roughly 37 sophomores.

“About half the team is sopho-mores and they fill a lot of backup roles. Our depth is very young so we really need to stay healthy in some areas.

“You know, on Friday nights, if they (underclassmen) have to go

in, they’ll be learning on the run because they definitely aren’t get-ting a lot of reps and they don’t have any experience under fire yet. They’ll get baptized quick.”

That baptism begins Friday when the Pios take on St. Martinville in the second game of the Lafayette Kiwanis Jamboree at UL-Lafayette’s

Rayne High & Notre Dame on a successful season!

Best of Luck!Cajun Field. From there, the

road doesn’t get any easier.

Notre Dame will open the regular season the follow-ing Friday at home against Southwood before traveling back to Lafayette on Sept. 9 to take on Breaux Bridge.

The Pios will then host Teurlings on Sept. 16 before back-to-back road games at St. Louis and Catholic High of New Iberia close out the non-district portion of their schedule.

The Pios will open district play at home on Oct. 7 against Jennings and then travel to Iowa on Oct. 14. Westlakevisits the Pios on

Thursday, Oct. 20.The Pios’ show-

down with cross-town rival Crowley High follows and they close out the regu-lar season on Nov. 4 with a road trip to South Beauregard.

“We have a really challenging sched-ule,” said Cook. “The first half is really going to test us and this schedule doesn’t allow you any breath-ers.

“And the district is going to be very competitive. There’s good coaches in the league and good players that will provide you with quality teams. I think the district is going to provide us with some real good games down the stretch.”
