Happy March 4-H Families,

One of the foundations of the 4-H program is learning by doing through experiential

learning process or hands on learning. Kids excel when they have the chance to try

something with their hands and under the guidance of a caring adult, like a 4-H project

leader.

4-H leaders are the key to a successful 4-H program. They have the unique ability to

provide life changing opportunities for youth. Projects leaders work with members by

planning and organizing activities to help them meet their 4-H goals. If you are a project

leader or a parent serving as a leader, don’t feel like you have to be the expert. Youth can

achieve personal growth and skills with your support through experiential learning, field

trips and guest speakers.

Leaders have a been a key part of the 4-H program since its start – way back in 1902. The

first 4-H projects included corn clubs for boys and canning clubs for girls. The program has

come a long way in the last century. Project books weren’t always a part of the program

either but they have become an integral part of the learning process. It helps parents fill

as leaders to help the youth explore new topics. MSU Extension is always looking for ways

to expand the learning opportunities for youth to keep them engaged on what they want

to learn while being progressive.

If you have a passion for a topic and want it to be a 4-H project – you can turn it into one

with a self-determined project! Some 4-H programs have even created mini-help sheets

to give ideas for experiential projects. Check some out here:

I have dreams of creating a new 4-H curriculum: Winter Snow Sports. Initially we want to

focus on down-hill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. I’ll put together a work-

group soon. If you are interested, please reach out to me and I'll let you know about the

next meeting.

In the meantime, check out some similar projects, like skateboarding and cross-country

skiing from other 4-H programs in the nation.

Sincerely,

There are 13 young adults from eight countries coming to Montana, with stays ranging from five weeks to three months. Contact [email protected] for more information.
