Numeracy

Mental Maths

Tables: Doubles (2+2 3+3, 6+6 etc..) and Near Doubles(2+1, 2+3, 3+2 3+4 etc…)

Daily discussion about time, day, date, month, year..calendar mental maths questions

Page 5: Ratoath Junior National School Class... · Web view- leadóg focal (word tennis) - 2 player oral language game - the two people take turns in saying a ‘focailnua’ and whoever

Mark the calendar at home as the days pass and notice the change in weather, the garden, trees and flowers. Make observations and record. If you do not have one you could make one for each month

Number Games

Snakes and Ladders with one/two/three dice), card games, Banker game,( this ties in with regrouping in addition and subtraction. The children have played this game in school and are accustomed to it. (They could use lollipop sticks/small lego blocks to create units and bundles of ten). Number bingo, addition snap, subtraction snap and Mathopoly(Twinkl.com) are all useful games

A great online site is IXL which has a self correcting tool. There is a family hub during school closures. This allows you a certain amount of time free before expecting a subscription

Capacity which is mentioned above in the Second Class work is an enjoyable and fun concept that the children could work on independently. They could measure, fill, empty, compare, predict how much liquid fits into certain containers. Containers can be collected and used once they are used up.gbottles, cartons, juices, empty but cleaned detergent bottles . (You are also teaching them how to reuse and recycle)

SIte: Topmarks. Capacity countdown.

Literacy

Revise Tricky words

Revise Dolch words. https://www.sess.ie/sites/default/files/Resources/Cirricular_Material/DolchWord_List_220.pdf

Literacy Games to play and enjoy!

Weekly spelling as mentioned above but only choose 10 words each week and do a short test on a friday. Get the children to correct them. This takes the pressure off you the parents and also allows them to self correct and learn where they went wrong.
