Slot studio is the name behind the winning project for the Mexican pavilion at the Universal Expo to be held in Shanghai in 2010. The aim is to represent the country using elements rarely used in this type of event. The team developed a proposal that instead of focussing on a building, focuses on a public square, leading to a space that, on a conceptual level, represents three moments in the life of Mexican cities: past, present and future, with the latter being symbolised by the quest and preoccupa-tions of new generations with a better quality of life in cities, through the restora-tion of parks and green areas.

With the conclusion of the building planned for 2012, the Headquarters of Patel Engi-neering Ltd promises to stand out on the horizon of Bombay. The project signed by the Andy Fisher Workshop studio from Singapore covers an area of 100,000 m2 which will be occupied by two office build-ings supported by a structure alluding to the company’s activities in the area of civil engineering and a volume that will house the first car park in the city with natural ventilation. As a response to the client’s preoccupation with outside spaces, the two structures will include garden areas, which establish a connection with the nursery located on the top floor.

Oxford University provides the setting for one of the most revolutionary projects to be carried out for over a century. This is the winning proposal designed by the Bennetts Associates architects studio for a competition, comprising a central library and a variety of buildings which will accommodate the Humanities division. In response to the master plan, the pro-gramme presented – to be implemented in two stages – includes routes defined by streets, squares, courtyards and gardens which will reflect the historic essence of Oxford. While the library will stand out with its imposing entrance and interior courtyards full of light, the other buildings, planned for seven different faculties, will reveal distinct identities.

O estúdio Slot assina o projecto vence-dor para o pavilhão mexicano na Expo Universal 2010 em Shangai. Tendo como objectivo representar o país utilizando elementos pouco explorados neste tipo de eventos, a equipa desenvolveu uma proposta centrada não num edifício, mas numa praça pública, um espaço que resulta em termos conceptuais na representação de três momentos da vida das cidades mexicanas: passado, presente e futuro, sendo este último simbolizado pela busca e preocupação das novas gerações com uma maior qualidade de vida nas cidades através da recuperação dos parques e áreas verdes.

Com conclusão prevista para 2012, a sede da empresa Patel Engineering Ltd promete destacar-se no horizonte de Bombaim. O projecto assinado pelo gabinete de Singapura Andy Fisher Workshop percorre uma área de 100.000 m2, que será ocupada por dois edifícios de escritórios suportados por uma estrutura alusiva à actividade da empresa no campo da engenharia civil e um volume que albergará o primeiro par-que automóvel da cidade com ventilação natural. Em resposta ao gosto do cliente por espaços exteriores, as duas estruturas integram diversas áreas ajardinadas, que estabelecem comunicação com a creche situada no último piso.

A Universidade de Oxford será palco de um dos mais revolucionários projectos levados a cabo desde há mais de um século. Trata--se da proposta vencedora em concurso desenvolvida pelo gabinete de arquitec-tura Bennetts Associates e compreende uma biblioteca central e diversos edifícios que albergarão a divisão de Humanidades. Em resposta ao master plan, o programa – que se prevê, será executado em duas fases – apresenta percursos desenha-dos por ruas, praças, pátios e jardins que reflectem a essência histórica de Oxford. Ao passo que o volume da biblioteca se destaca com a sua entrada imponente e pátios interiores repletos de luminosidade, os restantes edifícios destinados a sete faculdades distintas, assumem uma clara individualidade.

A proposta desenvolvida por Reinier de Graaf e Rem Koolhaas do gabinete OMA para o Stadskantoor destacou-se pela “perfeita combinação de inovação e sus-tentabilidade”. Trata-se de um edifício para a câmara municipal de Roterdão destinado a albergar serviços, escritórios e apartamentos. A estrutura modular é composta por unidades repetidas que se vão sobrepondo e recuando gerando uma forma complexa e irregular. Um avançado sistema garante a versatilidade e eficiência da construção e do programa permitindo que sejam adicionados ou retirados módu-los de acordo com as necessidades que se forem sentido ao longo dos anos. Por sua vez, o isolamento high-tech incorporado na fachada de vidro justifica o título de edifício mais sustentável da Holanda.

The proposal developed by Reinier de Graaf and Rem Koolhaas from the OMA studio for Stadskantoor stood out because of its “perfect combination of innovation and sustainability”. This building for Rotterdam City Council has been designed to house services, offices and homes. The modular structure is composed of repeated reced-ing units creating a complex and irregular shape. An advanced system ensures ver-satility and efficiency in building and the programme, allowing modules to be added or removed as dictated by needs that arise over the years. The high-tech insulation incorporated into the façade has earned the building the reputation of being the most sustainable building in Holland.

The island of Solta, in Croatia, will provide the setting for a daring tourist develop-ment signed by the architect Richard Hywel Evans in the RHE studio. Located on the slopes of a forest of olive trees, the first rotating hotel in Europe will emerge as a unique place from which to appreci-ate the magnificent landscape comprised by mountains and the Adriatic Sea. This three-storey, 61-metre wide building is designed to rotate at a speed of 1.3 times a day, providing a unique experience in all the rooms. At its centre, a static 21m unit houses the reception and distribution areas. With their views over the marina, yacht club and Marina Village, the Guest Pavilions and four-bedroom residences will provide private refuges with a swimming pool just two steps away from the Spa.

This project developed by the American FXFOWLE Architects studio corresponds to the four parts of a master plan outlined for the creation of the King Abdullah Fi-nancial District. Comprising units of offices, homes, education, sports, commercial and cultural facilities, this development will be finished in 2011 and will encourage the separation of pedestrian and car traffic through the creation of protected walk-ways and a monorail system which aims at encouraging the use of public transport. The green areas link the four buildings that have been designed to adapt as best as possible to climate conditions and lead to energy efficiency, earning it the first LEED certification in Saudi Arabia.

Yinzhou Fantasy Island consists of a so-phisticated project designed by the Chicago studio DeStefano and Partners, which aims to operate as a commercial and entertain-ment platform between the city of Ningbo and the region of Chenpodu. The pro-gramme based on the structural expansion of the current canal system, will include eight streets with international stores and the Infinity tower, which will comprise a new five-star hotel, thus creating a new mega-destination for shopping and leisure. The Yinzhou Mall and the Amusement Park will define the nucleus of the master plan, giving rise to indoor and outdoor retail areas and locations for meeting and socialising. The District Cultural Center will complete the attractions with its art galler-ies, theatre and public library.

Situado na encosta de uma floresta de oliveiras, o primeiro hotel rotativo da Europa surge como local único para apreciar a magnífica paisagem composta pelo monte e o mar Adriático. O edifício de três pisos e 61m de diâmetro está preparado para rodar a uma velocida-de de 1,3 vezes diárias proporcionando uma experiência única em todos os quartos. No centro, uma unidade estática de 21m alber-ga a recepção e as áreas de distribuição. Com vistas sobre a marina, o yatch Club e a Marina Village, os Guest Pavillions e as residências de quatro quartos oferecem refúgios privados com piscina a dois passos do Spa.

O projecto desenvolvido pelo estúdio ame-ricano FXFOWLE Architects corresponde a quatro parcelas de um master plan delineado para a criação do King Abdullah Financial District. Composta por unidades de escritórios, residenciais, educacionais, desportivas, comerciais e culturais, a obra que será concluída em 2011 sugere a separação entre o tráfego pedestre e automóvel através da criação de passeios protegidos e de um sistema de monocarris que pretende incentivar a utilização dos transportes públicos. Os espaços verdes unem os quatro edifícios desenhados para maior adequação às condições climáti-cas e consequente eficiência energética, valendo-lhe a primeira certificação LEED da Arábia Saudita.

Located on an abandoned industrial site of 60,000 m2, the new Hellenic Cosmos Cultural Centre seeks to celebrate history, mythol-ogy and the Greek landscape and become one of the great future attractions of Ath-ens. The design, proposed by Anamorphosis Architects includes the master plan, land-scape architecture and three main buildings – the Exhibition and Research Centre, the Arts and Education Centre and the Museum of the Hellenic World. The concept, devel-oped by the architect Nikos Georgiadis is the result of a modern interpretation inspired by the organic relationship of history and Greek mythology with the landscape and gestures from modern daily life.

Situado numa zona industrial abandonada de 60.000 m2, o novo Centro Cultural Helle-nic Cosmos pretende celebrar a história, a mitologia e a paisagem grega revelando-se uma das futuras grandes atracções de Atenas.
