FRACTIONATING RAPPrice increases in liquid asphalt and virgin aggregates continue to climb, which is leading the industry to re-evaluate the use of recycle asphalt pavement (RAP) in hot mix asphalt (HMA) designs. Consider that recycled asphalt has rock the same age as the aggregate coming from the rock quarry today and liquid asphalt coming from the refined oil from oil wells. Most RAP processed today is ½” x 0, since it is coming from milled material which is generally surface mix.

In reality, any recycle product is worth what it replaces, and its value can be enhanced, if the material is treated like virgin material. To fully realize the full value of RAP, producers must treat it this way by milling the roads, processing (re-size) RAP like virgin aggregate ingredients and then send through the asphalt facility where it is dried, heated, remelted and mixed with virgin materials to make a uniform product.

At a time when material producers were faced with a need for increased production and tighter control over material specifications, the Vari-Vibe® and Duo-Vibe® high frequency screens were introduced to the market. These screens offer the highest screen capacity in the market for fines removal, chip sizing and more in both virgin and recycle material.

It is well known that coarse material requires more amplitude and less frequency, while fine material requires less amplitude and more frequency. The high frequency screen focuses on this fact by utilizing an aggressive screen vibration directly to the screen media with almost no amplitude being applied to the screen box sides. The high level of RPMs allow material to stratify and separate at a much faster rate. This produces more efficient sizing for finer material, as compared to conventional screens.

A pile of RAP crushed to ½” x 0 is like a black “crusher run” aggregate product and generally limits its use in mixes to 20% or less. By processing the RAP back to its original ingredients, then we can produce exactly the same products that we are using today in virgin aggregate but with a film of asphalt already present in it.

Horizontal shaft impactor (HSI) crushers are most suitable for processing RAP material and can be configured with a high frequency screening plant to create the ultimate in RAP processing. HSI crushers range in size from 2421 to 5252 depending on operational needs in both portable and stationary configurations.

In milled RAP applications, a Fold ‘n Go® screening plant can be quickly and easily moved from facility to facility to separate RAP into different sizes with or without the use of a crusher. The ProSizer® plants provide the producer with the ability to close-circuit oversize material with on-board HSI crusher for further screening.

For producers who need less mobility and more stockpile capacity, high frequency screens can be configured into Stationary Tower Structures and close-circuit oversize material with HSI crusher.

SIZING RAP

The Vari-Vibe and Duo-Vibe family of high frequency screens are available in multiple configurations in both stationary and portable structures,

as well as mobile screening plants. Screen sizes range from 6’ x 6’ to 6’ x 24’ in single, double and triple deck configurations depending on screen model.

Portable high frequency screening plants produced by Astec Mobile Screens can reduce the cost of processing RAP significantly. These highly portable self-contained plants can be easily moved from facility to facility while processing RAP at high production rates. Wheel and track models available.
